Post by: ayayay on October 24, 2014, 12:59:41 AM
I have been mining vertcoin for weeks just suddently the cards are starting to overheat 102 f         could it be the motherboard, I have 3 cards msi 7950 and used them  one at a time and each one overheats. would appreciate some help.

Chances are it is not the motherboard.  It could be how hard you are pushing the cards.  Also ambient condition. What is your weather like?  Are you pushing the card's hard on OC? Are they using risers or do you have them all bunched up?

80 degrees outside and in a garage is kinda hot if you are pushing the cards depending on exhust.  You will need to make sure you are not over heating them.

If you have not already use risers to keep them away from each other.  Use a fan to help direct hot air away.

I might also suggest doing ROI math as GPU mining might not bring in enough to justify even risers.  If not turn cards down don't OC high.

Wait, your GPU went over 102 F and that's a lot? They can take much more, believe me, unless you meant 102 C. My old radeons were reaching 100 C when gaming and nothing happened.

yes 102 F  they  usually  average around 85 F     and as  I said  the  rig is stut down at 70F  I am not overclocking.

that sounds crazy low. I have my cards mining XMR underclocked and by an open window, temps are around 60-70c.

I´ve had my card shutdown when they reach 90-100c, do you have a temp shoutdown command set in your miner?

Dont 7950 card undervolt quite nicely?

When I mine with my 3x 660ti's and 1x 750ti they all sit at around 79C which is 174F while mining x11.

make sure your fan is working good or your gpu will overheat.

Change your fan and you should solve your problem.

It could also be the thermal paste on the cards, but if all three of them are hitting high temperatures all at the same time chances are it wouldn't be the thermal paste of them.

Try dusting out the PC and see if that has any affect on temperatures.

could be the dust-- I have the rig in the garage with pc cover off about one year-- it could use a cleaning

Not really, I wouldn't worry about the temps they are completely safe. You should set the shutdown to 150F or more. The cards are made to run at that temps and won't be damaged even if they go to 180F or more.
To burn the card you'd have to either reach something like >250F in spikes, or constantly run at above 200.

102 isn't overheating
