Title: [ANN] A new proxy for Namecoin
Post by: khal on May 24, 2012, 09:02:11 AM
Hi !

A new proxy is available to replace the dead masterpool proxy :
  • ip : 178.32.31.43
  • port : 8888

You can use it with foxyproxy in your browser to view .bit domains :
  • url pattern : *.bit/*
  • Mode : "Use proxies based on their pre-defined patterns and priorities"

See also :

Me too!

I think the idea is genius, but it's still a bit too technical for my abilities...

We are aware of this, and that's why we are developing easier solutions.
There will be an automatic configuration in foxyproxy (soon, i hope :)).

If you want to browse domains, everything is now really easy (recommended : change your DNS or install Foxyproxy in firefox) :
http://dot-bit.org/How_To_Browse_Bit_Domains

But, an easy solution means you don't fully benefit from the full power of the p2p.
So, there is still some work on this side.

Would those solutions be acceptable, for you, to browse .bit domains without relying on an external service ?
- a preconfigured virtual box running on your computer + foxyproxy
- same thing, with an installer but without virtual box + foxyproxy

Then, we also need something to manage and configure domains (or else) in namecoin.
Using the command line is not the most easy way to configure domains, subdomains and ip addresses :D

To summarize : which part is blocking you and what would you like ? :p

Honestly? I don't even know how to answer your question... :-[

Nothing is actually blocking me yet... I wouldn't know where to begin!

That's how 'untechnical' I am!  ;D

I get your point, when you say that easier stuff implies less possibilities, but eventually (even if it's in three or five years), I believe this will have to come down to icons and buttons...

That is if you guys want it to have a wide social/political impact, and I'm sure you do!

I accept the idea that before getting there, you first have to explore all the abstract aspects at it's core... It's just I'm not qualified to make pertinent critiques!

But I'll try the FireFox thingy tonight! ;)

As if the foxyproxy guy listened to you, he added the automatic configuration method (only visit a link :p) :
http://dot-bit.org/How_To_Configure_Foxyproxy

I think you are right on where we must go. This will need some brainstorming :p
Thanks for your untechnical report :)

OK, so I installed FoxyProxy, and I'm on "dns.bit"... Does this mean I'm no longer on the "traditional" web?  :o

Welcome ! :)

Your .bit requests will go through foxyproxy indeed.
You can try the search engine (http://bitse.bit/) and also create your own domain :p

Hey!

Doesn't seem to be working today...

When I enter a .bit address, I'm redirected to "http://www.website-unavailable.com/"  ???

Are you sure foxyproxy is still activated ?

I moved the virtual machine to another server, but it doesn't change anything (except best performances), and it's still working for me.
Plus, i don't know what is "http://www.website-unavailable.com/".
Maybe, if foxyproxy is deactivated, your dns provider received the request and redirected you to this page... (you seem to use OpenDNS servers because this is an opendns webpage).

website-unavailable.com is what shows when you are using OpenDNS - it gets returned instead of SERVFAIL or NXDOMAIN.

Verify that you have not the "Default" proxy selected (the blue one) but the "Use proxies based on patterns".

You currently have the default Foxyproxy configuration...
Did you change of profile ? user ? browser ?

You need to add the config again : http://dot-bit.org/How_To_Configure_Foxyproxy

Oh sorry! Didn't read your previous post very well...

Thought blue was good!  :-\

But a question remains: Where did my presets go? I didn't touch any thing!

Hi,

What is the status on the github repository namecoin/namecoin?

Is anyone working on it?

We really need a rock solid p2p enabled plug and play daemon...
