Title: Benefits of using BAMT/Linux?
Post by: aqrulesms on May 27, 2012, 05:56:55 PM
Hello,

I am currently mining without OC and plan to never OC.  I am currently on Windows with CGMiner.

I would like to know what the benefits of mining in linux is.  My system is also headless without a monitor, keyboard, or mouse.

How easy is it to administrate from another computer? Currently I am using windows remote desktop since the miner is Win 7.

If you have one rig already configured and running without issues, keep it that way.
If you plan to add another, definetly try BAMT. All you need to do is put it on USB key and edit 2 text files. In first there is HW configuration and overclocking, in second there are login info for pools.
After you've done that you reboot and it will just mine... BAMT also provides some nice statistics and graphs via web interface. Another mighte feature is pool fail-over.

Just to let you know, I have one 5830 mining on win7 and another one on BAMT; they are both overclocked with same values, but the second one goes up to 312Mh/s, instead of 290 Mh/s of the card running on windows. Too bad I can't use linux for work (yeah, I'm mining 24/7 @office too).

and certainly you have your boss' permission and you reimburse your employer for the electricity (and wasted time fiddling with cgminer)?

it's really none of my business but just in case you weren't aware, a network admin can easily tell if there is any traffic to mining pools occurring on the network and to identify which systems are responsible, unless you use  a vpn.  as instances like this abc in australia recur. admins will be scrutinizing traffic more closely and refusing to pardon infractions where profit at the company's expense was the intent: http://delimiter.com.au/2012/05/21/the-abc-didnt-sack-bitcoin-miner

BAMT with multiple 5830s:

  core_speed_2: 1020
  mem_speed_2: 300
  core_voltage_2: 1.125

  fan_speed: 80

  kernel: phatk2

Running at 330Mhash/s +, very stable @ 60C.

LOVE BAMT!
