Title: Vircurex Scam
Post by: moriartybitcoin on November 06, 2014, 03:55:22 AM
Not sure when Vircurex turned scammy, as I haven't logged into my account with them for months.

Logged in today and saw this message:

'Frozen funds
Your account has frozen funds (the reason why you might not see all your coins in the balances). Please read this announcement about the details. '

Another exchange bites the dust ...

What happened?  Theft or hacker, or theft blamed on hacker, or what?

I've noticed last week that they haven't paid any frozen funds back in the last few months. I have not received a reply from them about this, although their customer support does take a long time.

Anybody else have any communication with Vircurex about this?

Their volume is down hugely since a year ago, i dont know how they would be able to pay anyone back anything, only next bubble with huge wave of newbies could save the situation.

Wow, another exchange that I narrowly missed getting totally screwed on. I was able to withdraw my mtgox coins last year out of total luck, and decided not to trust any exchange and withdrew everything from vicurex soon after. This is a lesson that you shouldn't put the majority of your coins on a place that controls the private address. Im on the fence about coinbase, havent used them yet. I was really excited about Trezor but that still is centralized, granted your private keys are inside and encrypted in the Trezor device, but you are still beholden to their servers, etc. I like to have total control. If coinbase works, they will be the ones to watch. Blockchain.info is good, but they are kind of like coinbase, you have control of the private keys but we arent totally sure that they aren't sitting on a server that can be hacked.. give it time and those two places will the ones to watch..
