Title: GPU Nectar? Code name for bitcoin when it becomes verboten
Post by: Stephen Gornick on June 08, 2012, 09:10:49 AM
I was just reading an article on Forbes.com describing how with the black market for dollars in Venezuela, traders refer to the bills as "green lettuce”, “fresh avocado” or “your Benjamins” instead of "dollars".

"It’s best not to talk about it at all – the government is likely to take a dim view" is was how the reporter phrased it.

"The bolivar has weakened by 6.4 per cent this year to 9.23 to the dollar, hitting a record low on June 5 when it sunk to 9.27."

Another article, this one from Bloomberg, on the situation:

Quote
Venezuelans buy dollars on the black market either by exchanging cash or sending a transfer to banks outside the country. While this is illegal and can lead to imprisonment, people find ways to sidestep the controls, Segura said.

“Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” Segura said.

So, let's say the government of Venezuela or of any other judisdiction takes a "dim view" of bitcoin as well.

Will you give your dollars for some of that GPU Nectar?  Or will you perhaps be feeding your family from the proceeds of your golden carrots?

Nah, those names suck.

Can anyone come up with some good code names that could be used?

How about 'Satsumas'. Sounds a bit like Satoshi.

In my program I have adopted "sato"/"satos", its short enough to go with kilo, mega and giga that most people already know. (0.1 Gsato = 1 BTC).

But for slang... "golden bits", "happy codes" or "silicon gold".

I like GPU nectar though.

we use green lettuce codename on social networks and publics https, but the reality is that the same authorities sell $ on the black market, is called SITME (Transaction System Foreign Currency) you may buy dollars at a "REGULATED" a bit higher than the official price and much lower that black market, but you must necessarily account abroad, which is pretty silly considering that offshore accounts to be opened in person and if you have dollars you can not travel. Anyway  you can call them Bcons (bacon  ;D )

That looks more like slang than code intended to hide some illicit activity. That, seems to me, would be like drug dealers using words like "weed" thinking that the cops wouldn't know what they are talking about.  :D

Slang for Bitcoin that I have heard used:
bits
b's(bees)

Code on the other hand...  well if you are looking for some good code words then the last thing you would want to do is choose and announce it on a public forum.   ;)

how about "explosive oxidizer"? That way to avoid suspicion one could say something like "Hey man, can you sell me some explosive oxidizer?" ...wait, I may have to think more about this idea. :-[

And I would bet it would be pretty risky for someone using SITME to obtain dollars and then turn around and sell them at a profit without being "authority" ("authorized" ?) as well.

There are a few threads regarding Bitcoin and Venezuela.

With the electricity there being offered so inexpensively, mining could be done quite profitably.  Of course, the electric rate is low because it is subsidized.  Some GPU models are starting to sell pretty cheap because of poor performance on a Mhash/J basis but at the same time will still crank out a respectable number of hashes.  Now that there is an exchange in a neighboring country (Colombia, ... well in Brazil too but Colombia's is probably the easiest to do business with) even if there's no local buyers yet for bitcoins some of the mining proceeds could be converted and used to pay for the electric bills or perhaps fund further expansion.  With the upcoming drop in the block reward, there will likely be a glut of these GPUs on the market.

But a large mining operation is probably risky, as this thread post specifically addresses:

Anyway  you can call them Bcons (bacon  ;D )

You NAILED it!  $BCOIN is the ticker symbol used on StockTwits for Bitcoin.

Anyone selling any BACON?  I need BACON!   Bolivars for bacon ...  anyone?   Perfect!

actually has very little risk, once the money is in your foreign account, and is left to track. The system is quite robust, there are many people who do the formalities for a percentage of the order and in less than 1 week you have the money in the account.

in terms of electricity, if it is subsidized and is a pain in the ass, many electrical outages. luckily when assembling my little farm also invested in a generator fuel, as we have the cheapest gasoline in the region $ 0.06 per gallon thus keep these girls consuming watts 24 hours a day :)

HAHAHA sounds great BACON for sale!  ;D

Nowhere in the protocol does it require you to use the term "Bitcoin." Change the name before compiling the souce of your client to whatever you want. Print physical bills and just call them "money." Everybody likes money.

We all know that eventually all other money systems will fail leaving only one form of money. Let's just call it what it is destined to be. MONEY. "Everyone likes money, that's why they call it money!"

Sounds like people in Venezuela really want to escape their own currency. Some enterprising person could probably make a lot of money selling 'the coin' at a premium down there. By 'the coin' I mean bitcoin of course.
