Title: Bitcoin Starter Gift Set for Christmas season --- Thoughts?
Post by: box0211 on November 20, 2014, 06:24:28 AM
I combined a few elements I made this year for the Bitcoin fair here in nyc and decided maybe it would be a nice gift set for this coming Christmas. I noticed there just isnt any good bitcoin starter gift sets anywhere so I made the following. Your thoughts on how it can be improved would be appreciated.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/198521425/ultimate-gift-set-physical-bitcoin

I haven't sold any yet, but I just gave them away as Bday gifts this year.

I was actually suppose to combo it with an android phone with mycellium preinstalled to really get our friends and family on the bandwagon. i can get cheap android phones for relatively low cost ($20-$30), but I haven't worked on that version yet. Hopefully I can whip something out by Christmas.

I don't think it has created enough of a transformation in the worlds economy yet to be able to take place in memento. But I certainly see the logic in there. So not a bad idea at all.

I've been wondering what to get my friend for Christmas and I really like this idea! Seems like the perfect way to get friends and family into Bitcoin even if they know nothing about it

Throw in the phone with mycellium preloaded with an appropriate amount of uBTC for the recipient,
and a Bitcoin For Dummies book and I think you'd really have something that might catch on.

BTW...can someone direct me to a Bitcoin for dummies type thread here? Or write the book? ;D

Looks pretty cool and would make a nice gift. Are the bitcoins on the coin or an additional paper wallet?

You could just design them a nice paper wallet or card and give that to them.

thanks for the feedback... the additional android device should be optional as that would really shoot the price up to at least 50-100. Do you think people would spend that much on a starter kit type of thing? where it would contain a brochure / paper wallet / bitcoin memorbilia / and android phone ? I mean how much do you think people would pay?

I think it would be fine as long as the android phone is optional since I think most people already have smartphones. I can't really see someone spending more than $100 for all of that on a gift. So as long as you have the right price with this kit I think it's good.

It is a really good idea.
Some reading material on Bitcoin would help too....
Some people might be clueless about what Bitcoin is.

questions.
1.
is the physical coin just a piece of metal with engravings on. or does it actually have a security seal on one side hiding a private key underneath and displaying a public key on the visible side of the seal to actually fund the physical coin.

2. giftset.. hmm i dont see more then a couple items. maybe worth also having a second option that includes a hardware wallet for a little extra in price. thus making it more of a set rather then a scrap of paper and a piece of metal

sorry to be harsh but seems more like a gimmick/novelty. rather than a real "starter set"
EG include a ledger nano hw.1 and sell it as a set for $50.. (but ensure the physical bitcoin can be funded, otherwise its not a physical bitcoin. and instead a bitcoin novelty paperweight)

Hey there. The set looks nice but if I were going to purchase it I would have opted for a physical coin not encased in a display frame. I don't know if you could take it out of the frame or not, but I think a coin with the public and private keys engraved on it would have been better than a simple coin paired with a laminated wallet. Also the addition of a cheap Android phone with a Mycelium wallet pre-installed might not attract more customers. I would have included a card with a QR code of the Mycelium wallet printed on it so people could download it from the Google store on their own. And you could include cards with QR codes for Bitcoin wallets for the other 2 major platforms -  iPhone and Windows Mobile.

I think it is a bad idea for people who have not been introduced to Bitcoin yet. These physical bitcoins confuse people. because they think bitcoin is a physical coin. It would be a much better gift for people who are already into Bitcoin, and would appreciate the gesture.

I would rather offer some sort of fancy paper wallet, with instructions on how to create your own paper wallets or a easy manual to show them how to create a web wallet. < Something that would stimulate adoption >

I once bought a gift at a discount through Purse.io and I included the proof with the gift. The person was so impressed with this that they asked me to help them to setup their own account, so that he could also buy items at a discount. < This shows them the benefits of using Bitcoin, over other payment methods >

I like the idea of a physical coin for new peole as long as you can explain that its basically just a keepsake. Im planning this year just handing out a few paper wallets with a small amount of bitcoin on it for xmas this year. Its a pitty i never did it last year as well because everyone would have made a nice bump in profits. You never know though, hopefully this ime next year we will see similar gains.

There are some demands to want physical bitcoin, just a problem is the security of private keys, and the trust people to people give their private keys.

And maybe if this for gift to people who don't know bitcoin in first place, you should make a simple guide book how to use bitcoin, this is can bring new people to try, since your physical bitcoin looks luxury it will be attract people to try.

You could get Bitcoin mugs, keychains, T-shirts and Lapel pins as well and a Bitcoin cake or confectionaries to instill a nice Bitcoin fair and a good environment for the ones learning about it the first time. I'm sure a lot would be interested in picking up T-shirts. Also, it would be great to demonstrate and ask people to install a Bitcoin wallet on their existing phones and you could gift them a small amount to experiment with. This would be really nice for them to try and purchase pizza's themselves and a group by paying with Bitcoins.

Also, considering purchasing the book by Andreas M. - Mastering Bitcoin: Unlocking Digital Cryptocurrencies and gift these to those who are eager to learn more about in-depth about Bitcoins.

Really cool little pack, I find this a great idea to give out to family and friends, I am trying to entice my people to at least download the Circle App and I can gift them that way, but something physical like your pack is quite tempting.

i think it is a good idea to set gift set for Christmas season, but the gift set that you made is only appreciated by the one that recognized bitcoin, if the person who accept this doesn't know about bitcoin then he won't appreciate it, maybe you can set a gift set that can bought by bitcoin, like toys or mug or anything that is common as a gift for Christmas, in that way people can be more attracted

You seem to have a few reviews now, so have you sold any yet?
Might be something I'm interested in for the holidays :)

I thought Casascius Bitcoins were banned... nobody apart from government are allowed to mint currencies? If you sell that as a starter kit, you

might run into trouble : http://www.coindesk.com/us-regulators-bitcoin-mint-casascius-shut/ ... This should be purely used as a gift set as a

show piece, not a currency starter kit.  ;)

Casascius coins are not banned. His shutting down had nothing to do with "minting currencies". They decided that he was an unlicensed money transmitter, which is illegal.

Christmas is coming!almost 1 month to go... this article give me an idea. I think this is also a great idea!why not!a package of bitcoin wallet with a small amount of bitcoins could be a great gift. But if ever i will do this thing, i will put a little investment on a trusted site so that the person who recieve my gift can have another source of bitcoins. This idea can also attract anothr person to embrace the bitcoin world since that person will become a new member of bitcoin user.

This is a nice idea. It can also expose people to bitcoin. Having more people understand bitcoin is good for everybody not only those who has bitcoins already. Plus, this is a good earning opportunity for you my friend.
