Title: Incorrect Password HOWEVER I KNOW it is correct. - IS THIS A BUG??
Post by: TheCryptoBank on November 26, 2014, 03:32:04 PM
Hello All,

so this is probably a Noob question but i would really appreciate the advice.

I have been using Electrum for a little while now and so far its functionality i have been impresssed with. HOWEVER now i have a slight issue. Everytime i go to send from my wallet it asks for a password, I have input the CORRECT password and yet it ALWAYS states it is incorrect? I tried to take the seed from the wallet itself in the wallet dropdown box and i input the password there and it opens the seed window yet it shows the seed has 0 words?
How do i save my wallet? I want the funds out of it.

And heres the thing, i wonder if this is actually a system issue because i went and got a BRAND NEW laptop yesterday. Ran them both side by side. I installed Electrum on the new one. Opened a new wallet. INPUT A VERY SIMPLE PASSWORD and then i tried to send a small amount as a test and guess what? INCORRECT PASSWORD!!! How can this possibly be? The password on the test wallet is so simple even a chimp could guess it!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as i urgently need to gain access to my main wallet.

Thanks again

So let me get this straight:

If you try to get the seed, by going to:  Wallet=>Seed,
it will prompt for a password.

(If the password is incorrect, it will say "Incorrect Password".)

Yet, you are saying it is ACCEPTING that password there.
...and then showing you a blank seed.

That in of itself doesn't make sense because how can
the seed be blank?

And when you try to use that same password to send, its not working?

Hello Thanks for the reply.

Yup that is Precisley what i am saying, i tried generating another new wallet and the seed is displayed when you go to wallet...seed... But on this one it is empty and states (Please save these 0 words bla bla bla....)

Seems weird to me?

make a copy of the wallet file and open it with notepad or text editor.
search for "seed", do you have a value there?

Ok i did that and there is a value next to the word seed, however it is a numeric value and not words, what should i do now?

It actually occurs twice, one near the top of the file and one lower  but the lower one says "seed_version" the first one just says "Seed" and then has a numeric value after.

Thanks for your help in this, i really appreciate it.

so now we need to figure out if this is encrypted or not.

How many characters is the seed value?

btw, i have no idea about this error or what happened etc...
sounds like something got corrupted but i'm just guessing...
maybe others will have better solution...

i am just trying to see if we can manually restore your seed
from the file.

Hopefully we will get somewhere,

Ok so, there are these == included on the end of what is written after the word seed. if we include those then it is 88 characters long and if we dont count them it is 86 characters? This is the first place it says 'seed' at the top.

Any use?

yeah, so that's an encrypted seed.  Unencrypted are only about 32.

Well... I hope some of the real experts here chime in...

But if no one else can help you, I can try writing you a python
script to manually decrypt the seed string from the wallet file
using a password.

Although I can't predict the results based on the funky behavior
the wallet is doing already.

What's the seed version?  Whats the electrum version?

How much coinage are we talking here out of curiosity
thats stuck in your wallet?

Damn thats annoying!

That might work! yeah the wallet has gone crazy, there is NOWAY the password is incorrect and it obviously wont open the seed window if it was.

The seed version is 4 it says and electrum is 1.9.8.6 and is the LTC wallet.

And well it is a good 2BTC+

Thanks

im not familiar with the LTC version... but try it , what do you have to lose -- just make a copy
of the wallet file so nothing can be modified on the original.

There is no balance or transactions appearing.

It just wouldn't let it open. I guess it isnt cross compatiable between LTC and BTC.

Anyone whom figures this out can have a share of the funds, ideally dont want to lose them...

If you think there's a chance you have you're password wrong (e.g. a typo) you could try a brute forcing tool. btcrecover (https://github.com/gurnec/btcrecover) supports Electrum-LTC, it might be of some help.

Ignore that, I didn't read the OP very well, and it probably won't help any.

if it accepts pwd, change pwd to blank, can you try that?

that way, we can get unencrypted seed from wallet file.
