Title: Would I be able to run a third card on my PSU?
Post by: pekv2 on June 16, 2012, 05:18:42 PM
I am mining on 2 5850's atm on my PSU.

Would my psu be able to handle a third 5850 at mining?

This is my PSU.

60a rail, 750w (825W Peak).

http://www.pcpower.com/power-supply/silencer-750-quad-black.html

I am thinking in the future, I might add another 5850 if my psu could handle it.

What do you guys think?

Do you have a killawall? What's the draw from the wall with 2?

Also, are you undervolted? Undervolted 5850s only pull like 130W a piece, IIRC. So ya, you should be able to put a 3rd on there NP.

I do not have a killawatt. One 5850 is 943/300 at 1.088v, the second 5850 is 1000/300  overvolted to 1.225v.

I will look into a killawatt in coming months. Getting a third card isn't something I am going jump on right away, kinda play the wait game see how those bfl jalapenos pan out to be.

Well, it depends on how much you undervolt. At 0.95v, 5850s pull more like 90W.

One of my rigs has 3x 5850's, 920/450 (Core/Mem)  Stock volts.  550W at the wall.  I'd say you're going to be fine.

I generally estimate 150w per 5850 (850-150-1.05 @ 352 MH)
50 watts for the MB

500 Watt total, 750W PSU would be fine. NICE single rail 12v power supply (I cant tell you how much time I have spent balancing multi rail 12V, on top of multiple power supplies)

You can pick up a Kill a watt meter really cheap, I just picked one up today at Menards for $14.57, my first one was like $25.00 at Ace hardware.

I hear ya.  I refuse to waste my time on Multi-Rails.  XFX and Corsair Single Rails all the way.

you shouldnt even have a problem running 4 5830's with that power supply as long as its a dedicated miner, at the very least you can run 4 at the 1.088 volt setting they use about 150 at stock 1.163 so you would be much lower than that

I'm running 2 5850 stock volt/1015 core, 1 5870 0.95v, and 2 5830 0.95v and I'm drawing 740W at the wall with a HALE90 (80plus gold). Assuming 87% efficiency, thats about 644W DC current, still plenty of headroom on my PSU.

Wow, so basically, I could slap two more 5850's on my psu if not overvolted or overclocked. Even then a possibility a 5770. 5 cards all together, as my PSU is 825 peak.

I have 5x 5850s @0.95v and pull 540 watts at the wall. 5850s are good for about 300-305 Mh/s at 0.95v.
