Title: [Seeking Funding] Crypto-Minecraft Server - BitCraft
Post by: Vortex20000 on December 06, 2014, 04:33:38 AM
Code:
IP: playbitcraft.pw

Overview

I plan to create a Bitcoin-based Minecraft server with an in-game wallet and most attractively the ability to invest in automatic miners (literally, in game) that will earn passive income. I figured that these features combined with the ability to earn per valuable items attained in the game and also online time would present an irresistible reason to join.

I also intend to offer users 500 satoshis when they first join.

Custom deposit and withdrawal system, using BitcoinJ, a library for Bitcoin written in Java, for this project.

Progress

  • Framework
  • Deposit and withdrawal system
  • Integration into in-game market
  • Alpha deployment
  • Passive income system
  • Beta deployment
  • Beta testing; squashing bugs; etc
  • Public release

Features

  • Automatic deposits
  • Automatic withdrawals
  • Earn for killing mobs and chatting -- on hold
  • Passive income system (coming soon)
  • Complete, integrated market - deposit, buy, sell, trade, and withdraw

There are already servers which incorporate bitcoin, but this will be the first to have an economy fully based on cryptocurrency.

Our main source of revenue will be taxes on every transaction in-game on normal users, then selling perks such as no taxes, hassle-free in-game shops (PayIvy.com style), and other normal Minecraft server perks.

Incentive to join this server will be the constant slow supply of Bitcoin by in-game miners (special furnaces that eat coal and produce currency based on how many other miners there are) and cloud mining, which does the same thing except with fees (yay more profit) and the benefit of not occupying any space or being raidable.

Miners' payout will be determined by the revenue of ads on the project's site, which I'm working on. Miners will receive 100% of the payout from these ads and thus we will not be losing money paying users. There will be no "sell" server shop, which means users can only give us BTC for items, not the other way around. Members will be allowed to rent stalls in a marketplace to setup in-game shops to buy and sell items, though, and in this way - also by injecting or removing certain quantities of items - we hope to keep a player-sustained market. Rarity of certain items can be increased to bump prices up and more of a few items can be injected into the world to make the item less rare and worth less. This should help market fluctuation and make the game a little bit more interesting to play.

As a backer of this project you will receive a relative share (your investment / total investment * 100%) of 90% of our net profit (gross earnings - server hosting, bills, etc) while I keep the other 10%. This will continue until you have been paid 1000% of your initial investment. At that point investors will only get 20% of net profit and this will continue till whenever this project is terminated.

Run into a small problem. BitPay's API seems to return an invalid currency error when I pass in "BTC" and an invalid amount error when I pass in "0.01", both of which should be possible to create an invoice with.

I am looking into using BitcoinJ (which ultimately is way more flexible), but the problem I see is that so far I've not discovered a way for it to not have to download the whole blockchain (call me an idiot if you wish).

You mistake my intentions. I'm setting up my own server (competition, mwahahaha), not putting it on yours. ::)

I will continue to manage yours until you ask me not to.

I enjoy that sort of work! Especially since it's a game!

This sounds amazing. I would love to be part of the beta test. After the owner of BitVegas went AWOL I have been searching for a good Bitcoin Minecraft server.

Hey there! Been waiting for a server like this for ages.

I used to play a lot on the original Dogecraft servers and was super disappointed when it got shut down, so this seems right up my alley! Can't wait to try it out.

If you need any help with world building, I offer my services. I've worked on the designs for Cryptocurrency servers in the past (I was on the design team for (the long lost) BitVegas), and would love to get back into that kind of thing.

Out of interest, will there be an economy in the server? As in, will players be able to trade with each other?

To answer your bolded question, yes, players will be able to trade with each other. When we get to the production stage I'll check with everyone who volunteered to build and see if they are still available.

Also note that Dogecoin integration will be secondary.

Will owning a paid minecraft account be a requirement to play in the server?

Yes, as I need to identify players by their UUIDs and not by player-names.

I wish. I'm on holiday and I've got no access to any computer, only got my phone and iPad. It's not enough to debug/write Java code.

I'm learning PHP for some other projects while I'm on holiday, because since PHP is a server-side language I can run it on some online emulators.

Good luck Vortex with this, someone needs to really take this idea seriously as it would be huge if done correctly...

If you need anything give me a shout.

BitQuest is doing this (check recent coindesk article), however, I'd prefer one where you can buy in. They are free to play but if you built an economy in-game where you could invest in ventures in game and profit from them virtually, you'd really be onto something.

Willing to invest BTC in this idea if needed (and of course under correct circumstances).

Seconded! I love the idea of virtual economies using real money, and Minecraft seems like the perfect way of going about it. The concept of being able to start up a "business" in a Minecraft server and actually getting something out of it is very, very interesting to me.

Am making something like a real, fluctuating currency. Also making a Reseller rank that can get this currency at a lower rate.

Well in theory you could do that by making an altcoin specifically for the server.

Right now it is based on in-game emeralds (quite hard to find, using anticheat plugin so users cannot find easily). Their value goes up and down by me running a check everyday at midnight GMT to select a random number from 1-100. If the number is <= 10 and the emeralds are currently rising in value, then the emeralds are made to start decreasing in value by a random slope. If the number is <= 10 and the emeralds are decreasing in value, then the emeralds are made to start increasing in value by a random slope. If the number is > 10, nothing happens.

Should make for an interesting market.

Interesting. Can't that be abused by people making massive villager farms though?

EDIT: Side note, if you are going to be using resources found in-game, the server will go down. Guaranteed. Dogecraft was a similar idea that initially gave value to diamonds. It got to the point where so many people were selling diamonds to the server that it just went under.

Point is, this concept is great if you want to make a faucet type system, but it is absolutely not sustainable.

interesting, there is so much thought behind this. I see what you mean by giving value to in game resources to sell back to the server. What would be a work around? Only being able to sell resources to other players? I feel like there would be no one buying anything if that was the case so im not sure

I'm thinking of making only donors and veterans be able to sell to server shops, and everyone else has to sell to them at their prices.

Hey, when will the server be open to the public? Will you only release it when it's completely finished, or are you going to get some users for private pre-release testing? I'd be quite interested and willing to participate!  ;)

Agreed, I'd like to participate in any initial testing phases too :)
I can provide good constructive criticism!

Hm. Maybe that'd work, but all it'd take is one corrupted veteran/donor that sells items to server shops for people for you to be done for.

If you want my opinion, the best way of going about this while still keeping the server afloat is to do monthly events where you inject some money into the economy. Enough to keep it alive, but not so much that it puts the server under. I'd be one of those people who'd be happy to deposit into something like this, but I'm not sure how many people are out there like me.

How about only opening the server shops for a day or two a month? That way you inject money into the economy without it being abused. And then for the rest of the month, players can earn money by trading with the community?

I've been researching ways to package the BitcoinJ lib into my jar file.

If I can't get it done the old way soon, I'll port everything over to a Maven project and use that.

So, any update on how things are going?
I've been researching ways to package the BitcoinJ lib into my jar file.

If I can't get it done the old way soon, I'll port everything over to a Maven project and use that.
Do you think you could maybe make an alpha/beta server?
Not until I can get the BitcoinJ in my plugin jar.  >:(

After that, yes. And that's the same time I'll be looking for funding.

How hard would that be? and when I get paid from both of my accounts' sig campaigns I would help you fund a little bit :) I won't be able to do a whole lot but anything helps
Well, Bukkit ignores the Class-Path variable in the MANIFEST.MF and so far my attempts at using ClassLoader have been foiled by that nasty IOException.

I have a long-awaited update! I can't get Java to use a Java bitcoin lib, so I'm building a PHP website to go with the server that will handle money! This will take a week at most if I can get started immediately.

See you all on the beta server shortly! ::)

Interested beta testers, please contact me. You must be willing to test with > 0.0002 BTC and < 0.005 BTC; I need enough to send tx fees but do not want to be responsible if you use too much and it gets lost somewhere :p

Don't you think that's better for everyone?  ;)

I'm not paying users to test. ::)

If they want, they can try it out now. Else, they can try it later.

ok ok, it's not my project but if they're going to try it for you I don't understand why you want to make them pay in order to try it, lol.
They're just few cents, but you can donate it to them for their time testing the server  :D

I don't care. do what you want, haha. As I've said it's your server!

Testers, add my Skype. (If you're not one - I haven't messaged you - just add my Skype anyway.) bitvortex

The way I've made it requires a large amount of funds every month because I have to host a VPS AND the server itself on different machines.

1) I sleep at night ;D ;D ;D

2) That's great, I think they joined last night and quit. I need to make it clear players have to register first... they keep running /balance, /deposit, and /withdraw commands without /register-ing first.

Hey

I've been playing quite a bit now, just gathering some resources etc.
Will there be shops or a way to sell to other players, because currently there seems to be no option to do so.
Another thing that I'm wondering is if there will be a worldguard and LWC like plugin to protect stuff and buildings. I understand that perhaps alot of things still need to be done, I don't want to rush you :), just wondering.

I could always help if you want.

Yes...the way you replied that is pretty rude.

My experiences

Java: Developed a Dropbox steal method using API, Created a BTC trade system, I have helped with a popular mod on MC known as Magical crops.

I am a developer(C++ + ASM)  and a web developer (Http, JS, Nodejs, PHP, MySQL, anguler, cakephp, Json)

ps: I was just offering to help with making the server and making a better spawn point etc. and a heavy modded pack that people like.

In my experience (years) of administrating/owning Minecraft servers...offering to moderate, essentially asking for Mod, is terrible etiquette and doesn't produce good Mods. And anyone who takes up Mods like that is generally going to find they get a sub-par staff team. Now I'm sure some people who offer to moderate have good intentions, but it isn't generally a good policy.

eh, i disagree... i just offered to moderate i didnt ask to be a mod, i offered. I know this is a new project so out of kindness i want to help if he needs it. There is a little bit of a difference. I know what you mean relative to 10 year olds begging to become a mod so i can see where you're coming from though  ;D.

Yes. The worst types of server are those where you can pay for staff... ::)

I disagree with you as well. Asking for mod in the way he did is basically a shorter version of making an application.
Isn't it, right? An application for mod, or "admin" for some types of games, like World of Warcraft private servers, or CS:GO, CSS, etc, normal servers require you to fill out a 1 to 2 page Application, which then, Literally ------- you ASK to become mod/admin for that server after you submit that application.
I've admined, owned, co-owned World of Warcraft Private servers, Counter Strike Source, and now Counter Strike Global Offensive Servers, and Yes, I've done many many many many Applications, and read Many many applications. and "May I have Mod?" ---- "I offer my 4 years experience as mod on Minecraft" and "Here is a 2 page application on why I should be mod" is no different, except in how you word things. It's just in the "Eye of the Beholder."

But applications are made expressly upon the request or allowance of the owner of the game server. There is a large difference between asking/applying for staff after being prompted to and asking out of the blue.

Personally on my server I only deny mod apps for 2 reasons:

a) That person logged on and instantly asked for staff/how to apply for staff/etc,
b) That person did something stupid like copy someone else's mod app.

It's served me well so far. (That doesn't mean I approve all mod apps that aren't denied though, a lot are left there as a backup pool)

Ive nearly finished my server. It uses a modpack which is very popular and has the ability to withdraw and send funds to players or use in shops in game! Will keep updated

Cool! Create a separate thread for it, please, not hijack this one.

Hey... Is this your project Vortex20000 ----> http://www.coinbuzz.com/2015/03/14/bitquest-minecraft-server-runs-bitcoin/

My kids are active Minecraft players, so they will enjoy this server... has this gone public or is this invite only?

Last I check, you where still under beta testing phase.  ;) Well, I hope this is you. {The server name is close enough to yours}

His faucet was ingenious, just a pity that did not work out.  :(

Vortex has put his project on hold. So I highly doubt it.

is it just me or the server is not working? what version of game does it require?

On the matter of this project: I'm putting this in something like status quo. Very busy now.

Nope. Their server is far from what I want to achieve. It supports earning bits of Bitcoin (literally) by finding emeralds, or something like that.

Launched! Join anytime. Find any bugs? Let me know in a private message on this forum!

Currently deposits and withdrawals are automated, the shop is working, and there's a nice, pretty GUI!

Vortex, if you need a hand with any coding, servers or anything, let me know. I would be more than happy to help out.

Alright, looking into some advertising opportunities. Don't expect many people to be on. (Expect just you. ::))

Hey if you wanted me to throw up a small ad on my site for you, I could. :) Is that cool with you? If so, what site should I link the ad to? Also, if you wanted a small 1 pager website(portal) hosted on my personal reseller hosting, I can set you up with a free account, that would give the bitcraft.pw a portal page and whatever info you wanted to add.If you don't have a page to link the ad to.

Let me know anyways :) Always happy to help a growing startup/business/idea/WETFPNMHF (What Ever The Fu%$ People Need My Help For) ;D

Didn't seem very popular. Need to build up enough cash to be able to have steady advertising.

Hi Vortex. This is an interesting project but I'd advise you to do a thorough explanation of how the funding would work and what benefit/expected ROI it would bring for investors.

Ideally a comprehensive business plan with specific ways that you intend to advertise.

You'll need most importantly to justify how the economy in-game will work since this will drive the return for investors.

If you can show potential investors why rather than just asking for it, you will have no problem finding the funding.

Can you turn on the server so we can play and test the features already built?

Second, whats the goal in total investment before you can start running the server? Is there a goal to even go into beta? Is there a limit in total investments and are you allowed to buy/sell your share?

In addition to the investment, are there some other conditions that have to be fulfilled before your project will continue?

I can turn on a low-powered MC server with this plugin, yes.

The goal isn't very much, 0.6BTC will last roughly 6 months. No, I've done beta testing with a group of friends. We should be ready to launch straight into production. Yes - I suppose. A ledger will be kept with an address/username to investment entry for each investor. You can think of shares as satoshi, as you can request for me to transfer invested balance from your "account" (so to speak)  to another.

Investment will kick-start this project, more time, effort, and maybe money will be needed to drive traffic to this server to create a regular playerbase.

I hope I've answered your questions.

I haven't received any. I will post on the thread when I receive a decent amount, so in the future it can also be verified.

I have an offer of 0.15BTC, told the user to hold it first. If I get 0.45BTC more offered I will launch - officially.

Testing IP: 202.166.44.2

Port is default, 25565. It's offline/cracked, meaning anyone can join as you or something. It's for testing. Haven't decided how to make it integrate into the economy - through vault or through in-game items as currency, so Wallet <--> Game won't work.
