Title: Ask if they accept Bitcoin every time you buy online
Post by: TeslaUa on June 19, 2012, 12:30:23 PM
You know what...

Think of it as your vote for Bitcoin.

Contact seller and ask if they accept Bitcoin, just that simple. Now, clearly politeness goes first, if they just say 'no' don't press mentioning it again. But most self-motivated sellers would ask what it is. And that is where you can briefly explain it to them as you understand it. If they would want to know details that are too long to explain say 'just google bitcoin' to them.

And self-motivated sellers is what Bitcoin need.

I totally am in for that!
I believe we need more sellers now, having gained a lot of users and publicity already.
When ordering christmas stuff I asked about Bitcoin every time too.

Maybe lets collect short and catchy texts for everyone to copy&paste?
A short one, not more than two sentences, as initial attentionmagnet, and a block of text for when there is any reaction?

Now someone needs to create a browser plugin which autofills "comment" field always with "Would it be possible to pay with bitcoin" in the future :D

Maybe I will take this as a bitcoin hackathon project :D

Today i asked xtranormal.com if they accept bitcoins but they said no. I use it a bit to make short animations and movies and they have credits you can buy.

This is really the way forward for bitcoin. The more merchants who hear about it the better. Plain and simple. I've already asked one site if they would consider accepting bitcoins.

Just brought it up with Scott at http://www.barcodeart.com/store/customizable/index.html - he said he hasn't gotten any bitcoin: QR code button or tattoo orders yet and would check out Bitcoin (I linked him to this forum). Hopefully we can make it worth his while to accept BTC for BTC products!

This is definitely the right approach.  Keep asking.

If by chance you get a response something like "yeah we thought about it, but couldn't figure it out, or decided it was too difficult'  put them in touch with me right away.  We have hands-down the easiest tools for businesses to start accepting bitcoins with very little hassle.

Yes, a big +1 to this. The type of organic transaction-based adoption that this promotes is what bitcoin sorely needs.

Haha, this is hilarious right next to the hand tattoo:

"And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name" (Revelations 13:16-17)."

I actually did this the other day. Mostly for convenience, but also so I could pat myself on the back for the bitcoimmunity.

I missed that. Holy crapballs! LOL

If they ask us what Bitcoin is, maybe we could tell them something along the lines "It's lile paypal but with zero fees and no chargebacks" :D

If you want to be taken seriously, don't lie about "zero fees."  Any merchant accepting btc nowadays (and wanting to end up with usd/eur/whatev) will face significant fees. Once the market has gotten bigger, they will be able to spend btc directly, then we would be talking (presumably low) transaction fees only.

"No chargebacks" is a great argument, though.

True. "No fees" isnt exactly the full truth. More like "less than 1% fees" (0.65% MtGox, 0.0x% transaction, don't know about bitpay and the likes)
I think "no chargebacks" and "no frozen accounts" are good arguments!

As always, do not forget to consult this page before evangelizing about Bitcoin: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Public_relations

Don't send emails that make you sound entitled; those will just drop into the circular file.

When I was writing this I had in mind a world where you could do everything with bitcoins, so the only fees would be the transaction fees. But for the time being, you're both right; "zero fees" is not accurate. Low fees is a lot better. Another good point Ente, no frozen accounts. They would love this as well :)
