Title: Graphic Design
Post by: AnonBitCoiner on December 26, 2014, 09:36:19 AM
To those of you that do graphic design, how'd you first get into it? Did you follow tutorials, take classes, etc? Do you need a certain artistic capability to do well?

You'd need an artistic spark. Thus making it look more interesting and/or not dull. I got into design when I was 10 years old :D
Always was drawing and coloring something...
I used to take workshops and some public classes to actually learn about some stuff, since there are rules in design. It's not like painting.

What about a desire to achieve success? I'm not a good drawer, unfortunately. I'm a musician though, so I have some artistic talent...Was it just doodling? How'd you hear about the workshops? Why'd you decide to take the public classes that you did take? I'm going to start investing time in learning how to design, starting next quarter. Haha, just wanted to do some preliminary research from some professionals!

Ask around, depending on where you live. Search for workshops and classes online for your area.
The desire is the most important part of being successful. That's great if you are willing to give yourself into it.

To be honest, if you don't have a natural affinity for art (or anything else for that matter), it's going to be significantly harder to compete with people who do. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try though! Who knows, you might be really good at it.

I know I'm at a major disadvantage; I'm not trying to compete with others in terms of GFX capability. I just wanna be able to design stuff for my own websites and programs, when I start designing. I feel like I could draw better if I were to take some courses. I was "nominated" in my art class when I was in elementary school...but I really don't think I'm that great of a drawer. I just never learned any techniques, and when I see my friends that can doodle really well, it makes me jealous haha.

Will do! I'm gonna attend some free workshops, if there are any, when I get the chance. Attending university is running me dry of $$ :X

Creativeness and an open mind is all you need to get started. And a computer with Wifi.

All it takes to be a good graphic designer is being familiar with the tools. Sounds easy, but can take years and years to master. Learning how to use Photoshop or C4D properly is a very good start, then try and move onto things like Illustrator.

Oh, and YouTube is your best friend. Google what you don't know, or if you get into an error, or what you want to learn. Bit by bit you will get good.

I've watched a couple YouTube tutorials, but it doesn't really seem to get me anywhere, unfortunately...Which program would you recommend for a novice? I've used GIMP for basic photo editing and simple signatures/banners for gaming forums
