Title: weird blockchain.info address problem
Post by: mem on July 03, 2012, 01:04:39 PM
Posting here as my newbie friend is not out of newbie jail yet and people may find it interesting.

Short version, he found a specific address that is valid but the blockchain.info wallet rejects as invalid.

I'm fairly new to the BTC scene, but have been lurking around the edges for a fair while.

I generated a new account at :
https://bitzino.com/blackjack
and it gave me a deposit address to use ( 1FVRij1uYQ4E823kwGV55QZQft9QVTJV23 ) but for some reason I cant send to it.
If I try I get the following:

With a mate I have checked it by sending coin to that address via MtGox and it worked.
and the owner of the site said:

Thanks for reaching out! I just reconfirmed your deposit address with the `validateaddress` bitcoin command, and it said your address is indeed valid.

I'm glad you got it working with mtgox, but I'm curious what the deal is with blockchain.info! If you find anything out, please do let us know!

Regards,
Gabriel

I've flicked an email to blockchain.info telling them but no response yet.

Any idea's?

I assume your friend copied and pasted the address exactly, and did not accidentally include any spaces?

It should strip any spaces in the address.

looks like a fluke with the site you are trying to send from is all. Will have to get them to check the logs. In the mean time, send the coins to your own wallet and then send them to that address. or create a new one ont he BJ site and try again from whatever wallet service you are tring to send from. If it also faisl then you know for sure the site is either doing soemthing funky or your copy/pasting is.

If I ask blockchain.info's wallet to send to 1FVRij1uYQ4E823kwGV55QZQft9QVTJV24, it tells me it's an invalid to address, but if I ask to send to 1FVRij1uYQ4E823kwGV55QZQft9QVTJV23 it asks me for the private key for one of my addresses to do the spend.

So either they've fixed the bug, or you were copy/pasting it wrongly.  Maybe your paste had some invisible formatting in it or something.  Try typing the address rather than copy/pasting it - does that work better?
