Post by: grue on July 06, 2012, 09:44:23 PM

So I decided it use it.
What I expected: https://bitcointalk.org/Themes/custom1/images/bbc/BTC.gif50

So you got almost exactly what you expected?  :)

Also, I noticed that not all themes support the BTC. some show the image, some show BTC.

The BlackBox theme, for instance, does not. Main reason I'm using the default, and not that.

Edit: WAS using that one. BlackBox works great now.

I would probably use Blackbox if it would float to the width of my screen instead of leaving copious amounts of space on either side.

Do you have the setting "allow websites to choose their own fonts" set?

Oh silly me, noscript was blocking the custom font.  :-[
Thanks, all working now.

D'oh! Don't feel bad, I've done the same thing many times over.

Rather than rely on a custom font, why not just re-use a symbol from Unicode: Ⓑ

It has the advantage that everyone has it already, and you can easily configure Mac/Linux to make it typable without the button. Having the forum-specific button is fantastic, but being able to use the same symbol outside the forum easily seems like a major advantage. Also the ⓑ or Ⓑ symbols don't look excessively bold.

This thing is that those other characters already have another use.

What is Ⓑ used for? I never see it outside of unicode tables and cute facebook names.

The "฿" symbol seems the most common. It's used for the Thai bhat (currently valued around USą3), but a ton of currencies use "$", and who uses bhats anyway? "BTC" stands out too much from the rest of the text, and doesn't copypaste well.

Hi guys. Just wanted to chime in here that we have an article in the Bitcoin Magazine now (issue #2) that will also be on the website shortly, describing the benefits of moving from the unstandard, image-based BTC and the national Baht currency symbol to Ƀ (ALT+0579).

It is being discussed briefly here as well https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=93948 and a list of current supporters is here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ajtx05YrHtIydEFmWVVWQWpuYmwybExZY1A1d3Y0Z3c#gid=0

That's kind of a weird symbol. If you're gonna push for a new symbol and really get this organized (I move of which I approve entirely), why not pick one that is still unique but doesn't look visually glitched, especially at small sizes? Eg ⓑ or Ⓑ ? There are already instructions on the wiki for how to set up some operating systems for easy typing.

The "image based" BTC can be emulated by using combining characters: B⃦.

Code:
LATIN CAPITAL LETTER B + COMBINING DOUBLE VERTICAL STROKE OVERLAY

The symbol: $ is often universally used to represent money, even when a dollar or peso is not the official currency. For example: earning $. B$ to represent Bitcoin money can also be used as an alternative.

Technically, '€' is the "other" currency sigil. While "B$" has the advantage that is 7-bit ASCII, it has the disadvantage that it is, quite literally, "bullshit".
