Title: Subfora to add Post by: dree12 on July 24, 2012, 11:43:24 PM With Bitcointalk's one millionth post, it seems we've reached the point where some boards are just too big. Here are some of my ideas for splitting up.
Legend: Bold Red: Hyperactive (>200000 posts) Red: Urgent (>100000 posts) Brown: Potential threat (>50000 posts) 1. Bitcoin Discussion 177249 posts as of this posting. The board that has the most posts also happens to be the second-most general (Off-topic, of course, is more general). Bitcoin Discussion currently has four subfora: Press, Legal, Meetups, and Important Announcements. I propose the following to ease activity in this board:
Part of the reason Bitcoin Discussion is so big is because... it is too big. A thread is most likely to get attention if it is posted in Bitcoin Discussion. Conversely, threads don't often get attention for too long: none of the top ten threads are located in Bitcoin Discussion. 2. Newbies 105067 posts as of this posting. Part of the reason Newbies is so gigantic is because there's a much larger audience if threads are posted there. The other reason is a large amount of questioning and technical support. If it is technically feasible, I believe the following subforum additions will ease activity in Newbies:
(This board is growing rapidly. I remember when I was a newbie, my thread asking for help got pushed off the page. Nobody checks the section frequently enough to keep up with its demand.) 3. Speculation 58085 posts as of this posting. Speculation is such a new board that even I recall its creation. Now, rather than being split off, it needs to be split. Speculation is huge because of volatility in Bitcoin's price and because of the importance of Bitcoin's price. Speculation is too big. It needs to shrink, but it is unclear how. (This board is growing rapidly and measures should be decided soon). 4. Marketplace 53490 posts as of this posting. Because of how this board works, the number of posts is not yet a problem. 5. Mining 51428 posts as of this posting. With so many subfora already, it's difficult to add more. Plus, this board is undergoing slow growth if any. No other board over 50000 is as stagnated as this one. Speculation is much faster-growing, and doesn't have a single subforum yet. That deals with the boards I have suggestions for. The newbies forum could also benefits from an "introduce yourself" sub. Speculation is most of the time used by traders to try moving the price by influencing others, It's almost a complete fiasco. And no, for greater effect, they will not be posting their speculation in "non-general reasoning" they'll be posting it in the main bitcoin discussion sub. It's just how it's bigger than its parent that makes it important to be subdivided. The newbies forum could also benefits from an "introduce yourself" sub.
