Title: Please add a button to view the next page In a topic.
Post by: CrackedLogic on February 14, 2015, 05:11:34 AM
I browse the forum with my phone and tablet often. Whenever I'm trying to view page 5/20(example) I keep tapping page 6/7. I do have the Android application,but I greatly prefer viewing it in my browser instead. So what I was thinking;
4 buttons should be added,  a "first page", "previous page", "next page" and a "last page".

Please take it into consideration.
Thanks

Oh god yes, its incredibly hard to click on the right page on a phone. I have to zoom in to silly levels to be able to get the right page.

Would be useful but hopefully there will be some sort of mobile site with the new forum.

I agree with the OP and I think this "feature" will be extremely useful (let's see if it will be added in the new forum software).

There is already a mobile site with the current forum.

Meta board (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=24.0;wap) mobile site, with the feature the OP is requesting and everything.

This thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=955218.0;wap) mobile site/version.

I do know about that. I know I am being a bit fussy, but I can't stand that. I always remove the wap whenever I land up there.

Yeah, that wap version might have been ok 10 years ago but it's not up to standard with current mobile versions of forums. I think the new one should do a bit better than that.

OK, done. The previous/next arrows should also appear extra large on small devices.

I also finally figured out how to get the mobile stylesheet to actually work. It's existed for years, but it seems that very few devices triggered it. It makes everything look a lot uglier, but hopefully a little easier to use on small screens.

Let me know if you have any specific suggestions for CSS to add to the mobile stylesheet (https://bitcointalk.org/Themes/custom1/mobile.css). I'm not much of a Web designer.

I can usually add extra classes/IDs to the HTML if this would be helpful in writing CSS.

This is on an iPhone using safari. Prior to today it looked much more like what you would see from a computer.

Additionally for several minutes the forum looked weird accessing it from safari on a actual computer.

That sort of display is intentional. It looks terrible, but it's supposed to be easier to use.

Is there a way to opt out of this display and/or tick the forum to think I am really viewing from a computer?

I don't know. It's triggered by this CSS media query:
Code:
only screen and (min-device-width: 320px) and (max-device-width: 650px)

What does everyone else think of it? If everyone hates it, I'll make it not so weird.

I've seen also the [tag] new was changed, or am I wrong?

Yes, it's large text instead of an image in the mobile stylesheet to make it easier to click.

I don't know. It's triggered by this CSS media query:
Code:
only screen and (min-device-width: 320px) and (max-device-width: 650px)
This is what it looks like in Chrome on an iPhone (clicked on 'request desktop site' however I don't think anything changed when this happened).
https://i.imgur.com/1ImbU3v.jpg

This is a little better however I still like the desktop version better (even on my phone).

According to this stackoverflow (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5844966/view-full-site-mobile-site-option) question, sites have a 'view desktop site' link that saves a cookie that rejects the mobile site. I am not sure if the above responses contains enough information to implement this and I cannot vouch that implementing it would not open up some security risk.

What does everyone else think of it? If everyone hates it, I'll make it not so weird.
I personally do not mind "pinching" my screen and/or zooming to make the specific text bigger and to click on page numbers, report to moderator links, etc.. I do however understand that these features are not available on all mobile devices.

FWIW the double arrow at the end of the page numbers will lead you to the next page when browsing a specific board. To accomplish the specific request of the OP, you could make the arrows farther from the last page number and/or bigger to accommodate mobile users.

https://i.imgur.com/JKYRW7k.png(in this case the double arrows are next to the 105, and this particular screenshot was taken from the meta board)

This is what the forum has started to look like after the changes you made. This is a view from my lumia 1320, Windows 8.1(I am talking about windows phone, don't start criticizing I.E).
Earlier the view was just perfect. Earlier it used to look like as it was on PC.

What's the point of these changes? The forum looks pathetic now. Its like a nightmare. I want things to be reverted back.
Thanks

I knew you were changing as the forum was terrible for some minutes. IMHO the next button, post/preview button and [new] button seems okay. Can you please revert other(UI) maybe except 'unread topics, watchlist and new replies.

Are you telling about the 'Jump to' option at bottom-right? I couldn't find an arrow for switching boards.

Edit : I could find a 'next/previous thread' button.

I am referring to this (https://i.imgur.com/JKYRW7k.png) button. It is next to the page numbers (in this thread it says "Pages: << 1 [2] All" - the 2 has the brackets because I am looking at page two currently) - it is on the bottom left and upper left

IMO the post/preview bars are too long and too close together. It's hard to hit the one you want now and it's stretching my screen. Anyone else have this?

Not for me using Safari. I think Chrome isn't good for UI, they automatically optimize UI for mobile. I haven't found any option to turn it off. Anyone?

It's not that bad but will be better if fixed, I think.

Me too. I think increasing the size(width) of the buttons or instead of stretching them fully, I think stretching 'Post' to left and 'Preview' to right would be better.

Really theymos? A button to view the next page gets added but not another essential feature like email verification... Also, this new feature screws up mobile interface, it used to be decent. Now it's not.

theymos works in mysterious ways, though most of the things you requested will likely take a lot more effort than adding some simple arrows. I agree that it's messed the view up but I'm sure it'll be tweaked soon.

I am not sure why you think theymos is going to add email verification. Doing so would greatly reduce the level of privacy that users would receive and if you were forced to confirm ownership/control of an email address in order to use the forum then many people would likely not further participate in bitcoin (myself included) due to the level of reduced privacy this would entail. When taking an account as collateral, it is a relatively simply task to require a signed bitcoin message to confirm ownership, which is a better confirmation of ownership then email verification.

From the looks of it the only real changes to the mobile version that theymos made were tweaks in the how new replies to your posts/watchlist buttons at the top, and the home/messages/logout bar underneath it. Additionally he made the arrow buttons much larger so it is difficult to attempt to click on them but instead click on a page number near them

theymos works in mysterious ways, though most of the things you requested will likely take a lot more effort than adding some simple arrows. I agree that it's messed the view up but I'm sure it'll be tweaked soon.
I understand his logic in adding this feature. By making it easier to use the forum via mobile devices he is making the forum friendly to a larger demographic which will result in higher overall use of the forum (and in turn greater bitcoin adoption)

OK, I removed the CSS that attempted to limit the width of tables and the CSS that removed the breaks between the "show unread..., show new..., ..." links, which I guess are what most people disliked about this.

I'm not going to work on this mobile stylesheet much. I am very much not an expert in Web design. (Take a look at blockexplorer.com. ;))If anyone knows what CSS would look good, tell me and I'll try adding it.

Edit: In top-left, the arrow and number is messed-up-like for me -> http://flic.kr/p/rbXsAC . Anyone have this problem?

That's intentional. It looks weird (especially when there is no » because you're on the last page) , but it should make it easier to click.

BTW, my addition of next/previous arrows applied to most pagination on the site at once.

Thanks for the quick fix, but the truth is the site still doesn't have a mobile design. However, I'm just waiting for the new forum to be released, hopefully with mobile (or responsive) design.
