Post by: imanikin on July 31, 2012, 08:00:18 PM
Does anyone have any experiences to share regarding the RiseUp.net email service?

Thank you for your time.

"We ask that you do not use riseup.net services to advocate any of the following: Support for capitalism, domination, or hierarchy."

Is Bitcoin considered capitalism?

I think they may consider it at least part of it, yes:
Quote
Economy: In a free society the means of production should be placed in the hands of the people, empowering communities to organize meaningful employment, and provide a responsible and sustainable standard of living which tries to meet the needs of all people.

Looks like they're anarcho-communists, and thus Bitcoin might be seen as an evil (though probably less evil than the US$).

Regardless of the verbal diarrhea about capitalism and genjix's political views, i see that RiseUp accepts Bitcoin donations (https://help.riseup.net/en/donate#bitcoin), among other unusual payments, such as Pecunix...  ;)

Yes, seems one of the remarkable Bitcoin characteristics is that it "makes strange bed-fellows."  :D

Yes, but no.

Yes in the sense that bitcoin supports True Capitalism's qualities of protecting individuals from coercion, thus empowering free minds and free markets.

No in the (jaundiced hippie anarchist) sense that Actual "Capitalism" is a statist neo-imperialist, mercantilist, centralized, coercive, oligarchical ponzi scheme.

As an anarchist, I'd say bitcoin is not capitalism. Bitcoin is simply a means of exchange. Capitalism is a historical and complex structure that involves extremely powerful actors (corporations, billionaires, the state and its military) -- destroying democracy and ruining the lives of regular people.  By contrast, Bitcoin is peanuts =)

That said, most of the people on this forum are pro-capitalism and there is a disproportionate number of right-wing libertarians.  In my view, neither of these groups should use riseup.net

The recent victories of bitcoin in the ongoing Darwinian contest between media of exchange is capitalism in action.

As a right-wing libertarian, I'd say that you are confusing capitalism (which is an abstract ontological/philosophical/economic theory) with History (ie what happened in The Past) and Statism (which distorts free markets with coercive interference).

Blaming a concept for actual events doesn't seem productive to me.  It's like blaming the laws of physics for starting a war and killing people.  Sure, a chemical reaction was the proximate cause of the deadly gunfire but the ultimate cause lies with individual Kings, Popes, and Bankers.

I'm going to use riseup.net, just to provoke a hierarchical, dominating response from the supposedly live-and-let-live sysops.   ;D

But isn't it nice how bitcoin provides economic interoperability between the various tribes of individualists, regardless of particular ideology?
