Once the chip is fully developed / market ready, you can bet all of the big farms will want to incorporate it as soon as possible. It will drive their energy requirements down, allow them to expand, and, as a result, ultimately drive up the difficulty. How long it takes to get to this point, or how high the difficulty will go, is hard to say. For instance, the SP31 uses RockerBox 28nm chips with an advertised efficiency of 0.34 J/GH, but the nominal specs for the miner is 3 kW at the wall for 4.9 THS, i.e. 0.61 J/GH (source: SPT website (http://www.spondoolies-tech.com/products/sp31-yukon-shipping-from-stock)). Of course efficiency can be increased with underclock/volting but it will significantly affect the ROI by increasing the investment cost per GHS. Spondoolies' next-gen stuff will use the same concept. It's actually pretty impressive that they can get their gear as efficient as it is and still have 100A VRMs on every single ASIC.

Quite true, but I imagine the "at-the-wall" efficiency would still be better than what's currently on the market, even if it ended up pulling 0.4J/GH. As for old news, partially. They had advertised they were working on a low powered, 0.2J/GH chip ages ago, but only recently finished development and testing. Turns out they met their original projections. They dont have time to make retail machines but will probably sell their chips in bulk if the price is right. Sell yes, but sell fast not so sure. Now if knc really can do a .06 watt chip in bulk that will sell much better. One thing I do think is growth will get a boost from this. maybe it will do steady 5% vs the 2 to 3% we did from nov. 2014 to now |
