Title: Newbie test
Post by: steamboy on August 03, 2012, 10:54:32 AM
I have a great idea how to separte newbies and user. Lets create test.

I have some tricky quistons:

1. Where is wallet.dat located (Windows).

2. What is real name of creator Bitcoin.

3. How to log into bitcoin account?

4. How much crypto keys your wallet.dat contains?

Please post your answers here.

Pro-tip: if you read the messages you reply to before posting on the forum you would have known:

1. Where is wallet.dat located (Windows).

I don't consider myself a newbie, but I don't use Windows and so I don't know where it is located (I believe it is somewhere in the Application Data mess, but IDK where exactly). Just to explain why some questions wouldn't work well for everyone ;)

A website recently became defunct. What does it mean to be "starfished"?

This should be on this "newbie test" ha...

But nah, on a more serious note what for? Some people aren't super tech savvy and wouldn't even be able to get to the bitcoin folder since its hidden ( the one containing wallet.dat) and just because they don't know that doesn't mean they should not be allowed to chat in a bitcoin community!

Anyone and everyone should be allowed. Except scammers..oh and assholes like (DaT) :P

Noooo! Mod! You just ruined our test lol :) That was a question for newbies to pass the unofficial newbie test! You just gave away the answer! Now we can't successfully weed thru all the newbies on here who have zero knowledge of bitcoins.

Sadly and surprisingly, many people ask stupid questions all the time without doing what they should always do first when they have a question..goooogle!

I get what youre saying tho

Second answer is incorrect.
The name "Satoshi Nakamoto" is believed to be a pseudonym.
Also added couple of new questions

users/app data/roaming/bitcoin/wallet.dat

You have to make sure you have hidden folders/files unchecked in your folders options in order to find your app data folder.

4. How much crypto keys your wallet.dat contains?

Please post your answers here.

Okay, I'm baffled. If both of this questions were in place when I signed out here, I would still be a newbie.  :'(

A test to get out of newbie status would be entirely counter-productive. The point of newbie status is to:
- Create an unavoidable cost associated with creating an account. If you're banned, you've got to do some work to be able to post in regular sections again.
- Contain most spammers and trolls so that their posts can be seen more easily.

A test has no cost for trolls, spammers, and banned users. It has a cost only for legitimate new users, who are exactly the people I want to enter the main forum.

What about this test (or an easier one) at signup, if possible? That should block most bots.

Bots are already effectively blocked unless they have manual help.

So if you are new user, u have to do same job as banned user to get new acc? That is pointless and just scares away new users who are exactly the people u want to enter the main forum.

Test question 1: Explain pool hopping.
Test question 2: Choose one of
                        a. Why is there so much hate for Atlas?
                        b. Why is there so much hate for Bruce Wagner?

Google the answers and you'll still have some learning to do.

Me neither, what job? Hanging out for a couple of days in the newbie section and saying hello to a few people before you're allowed to enter the main site?

The current requirements to get out of the newbie section aren't all that hard. I joined 7 minutes ago and have 3 posts already. Wow, so difficult I don't think it's worth it...
