Title: The Bitcoin Economy Needs a Farm
Post by: Kinnardian on August 05, 2012, 04:50:49 PM
A real one. You can't have much of an economy without food. Does one exist already? If not, I say we all chip in and buy one.

At some point we gonna join them.
But that's way more than just a farm ;)

It's not the same as a farm exactly, but I've thought about selling bitcoin for cash at the farmers' markets here in town (we have 3 of them) and trying to persuade the farm vendors to accept it. It's a good market that's growing for some of the same reasons that alternative currencies are; people are tired of being the victims of corporate greed. If you could get farmers' markets all over the country to accept and sell bitcoin, it might get somewhere.

Sounds like two project proposals to me:

Farmers Market Campaign

&

Bitcoin Global Village Construction Sets

I like a lot the idea, provided that is in a country that respects the human right to private property, such as Uruguay, Mexico, or Cambodia.
It could even work as a tourist resort or something similar. Doug Casey and some other smart millionaires are invested in this sector. (Both him and Bill Bonner invested in land and real estate in Argentina. Wonder why, since they are always cracking jokes about it).

How about both? If you can buy equipment with bitcoin it would be a hell lot easier to accept it. The problem however is without some sort of lobbying people will be far too exposed to government thugs.

Hence why you would get some people who are trusted in the community to be payed in bitcoins to do all the lobbying for us as well :)

This sounds like a good idea to me. Why not have the farm in New Hampshire?

So that makes four proposals.

Anyone with the know-how, resources, or willingness to head any of these up?

Farmers Market Campaign
Bitcoin Global Village Construction Sets
Bitcoin Resort (on the farm)
Bitcoin Lobby

Give it time ;)

Profound things like that aren't done overnight and require lots of people to support it. Over time people will come to the same conclusions we had in this thread over and over again, and once there is critical mass it will manifest in multiple places around the world at once.  8)

Someone's got to do the manifesting . . .

About resources, I have an old friend in Brazil (south, near the border with Argentina and Paraguay) which may help -just with info and contacts initially-, if a group here is interested in the location -which I find quite good under several different aspects.

About willingness: I would personally move there and work for free starting tomorrow just to plant my flag there (I visited it, so I know what I am talking about).

If youre going to buy a farm you should use the btc as collateral on a fiat loan rather than selling it.

Why do you write that?

So that you can hedge against the bitcoin price shooting up.

as long as bitcoins daily volume is below walmarts daily gross profits, there's more important stuff than a farm!

It's the other way around.

I'll be back in a decade to laugh about your statement.

That is a well good point, I think you might be a good selection to coordinate the farm finances. Do you know any banks that would take the BTCs as collateral?
Personally, I would volunteer to work the land.

What do you have in mind?

Not sure. Curious what everyone else has in mind. And then how to implement it.

Actually, we should gather ideas, evaluate, form teams around the ones we think we can make succeed, then execute.

Location proposals?

I'm signed up to a local scheme which offers "shares" of the food grown and picked per week (rather than a set amount), where you subscribe for a year and pay monthly. Could anything using Bitcoin work like this - on a small scale, maybe even just on an allotment? Some kind of cross between a pledge of cash (like a bounty pot?) and a local currency?
