Title: Beginner, choosing PSUs for BFL Monarchs
Post by: ELLIOTTCABLE on March 17, 2015, 08:57:21 PM
I'm a new miner, as of a few days ago when Butterfly Labs *finally* got my pre-order to me (as I'm
sure is the situation with many others.)

I'm currently trying to choose the most efficient power-supply option for powering these monsters.
BFL publishes very specific requirements for the PSU used:

Quote from: Butterfly Labs: http://ell.io/i17Ngs
Butterfly Labs recommends a minimum 650 Watt, Single 12V Rail power supply with TWO PCIe power
cables. There must be at least 46 Amps on the 12V circuit being used. Under NO circumstances should
you use a “Y” or “V” PCIe power cable. Doing so risks overheating of the cable. Fire could result.
In order to ensure long life and cool operation, 16AWG power cable wires are the minimum
recommended. Most PSU’s use 16AWG PCIe power cables, but please make sure your PSU is properly
compliant.

The *cheapest* solution I've been able to find, would be a CoolMax ZPS-1600B (http://www.coolmaxusa.com/productDetailsPower.asp?item=ZPS-1600B), which I can get for
$230 from Newegg. With two 110A and 50A rails, I could theoretically power three 46A miners on a
single 15A-breaker wall-circuit, spending $76-per-miner on power-supply. (Although I have to admit
some worry of buying the *cheapest* possible product …)

Edit: Seems that the single 110A rail on those multi-rail power-supplies powers *all* the PCI ports;
I wonder if I can get, or build, an ‘adapter’ from the 20-pin, or … hrm. /=

Within those requirements, does anybody have suggestions for a specific product, or at least
information on which brands offer the best value? What do you use to power your miners? (I'd like to
power at least two, or if possible, three, cards per power-supply. They shipped me a *lot* of
hardware to try to make up for all the delays. :o)

okay give me a minute.  does noise matter?

what is your power 120 volts or 240volts?

Do you have 2 or 3 of these?  I did a review of server psu's the gold  hp would do 1 very well

I went to his site he has the hps in stock

http://www.gigampz.com/store/p1/Gigampz_for_DPS-800GBA.html   the hp break out board 39.99

http://www.gigampz.com/store/p6/Refurbished_DPS-800GBA_850%2F1000_Watt_Power_Supply.html  the hp psu 24.99

http://www.gigampz.com/store/p7/6-Pin_PCIe_to_Bare_Wire_Cable%2C_24_Inches_%284-pack%29.html pcie 4 wire pack 15.99

I would love to get the plats.

I would not buy the unit you picked.

I would consider evga 1300 g2  if you really want  an atx unit.

It should just do 2.   I would look at amazon for one of them  159.99 for a new one with a 10 year warranty.

Do not buy the one you mention.  the evga is really popular for us miners.  fell free to pm for more psu info.

If they're rating them at 550W, you could get away with 2x on each Evga 1300W G2. There isn't really a non server PSU, sensible option to run 3 of these.

true even the evga 1600 p2 would struggle and it is costly

Yup. You can see on my comparison thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=486121) that the larger units just aren't efficient per $.

Get a DPS2000 with breakout board from sidehack and run all 3 off of it. You'll need 240v.

Yeah, that is an option. I'm almost out of Dell 750W PSUs until I restock over the weekend, but we're manufacturing boards this week. If you only need two PCIe per PSU I could get you three 2-cable 750W kits for $44 apiece and $15 shipping (cables are 18" 16AWG 6-pins).
A DPS2000 kit with 6 cables would be $100 flat plus $15 shipping and you'd need to conjure up fans and a C19 power cord.

Just throwing that out there. I can only advise on server PSUs, since that's the only thing I've ran miners off of since I started mining going on two years ago. Listen to the other guys for ATX options.
