Thx for the clarification, but I doubt in expansion of SIA hosts with the fixed IP or dynamic DNS requirement...
much storage is available if nobody ever uses it.[/b] That's why we are choosing to focus all of our energy on the uploaders right now. Because Sia absolutely needs more uploaders, much more than it needs anything else.
What is the way/ways that you let people know of Sia's existence and capability?

Tell your friends. Tell your Twitter/Facebook/Google/etc followers. Make a buzz.

Above all: If you like/believe in the future of Sia, then use Sia!! There is still much to be desired from the Sia wallet. But, by using Sia actively you signal to hosts, developers and everyone else monitoring the network (http://explore.sia.tech) that there is activity.

Critically, as you gain experience you're in a position to help new users. Dropbox experienced exponential growth in its early days, much by utilizing social network (referrals). There's a new Sia users each day, but some leave due to simply issues with the wallet, firewall configuration etc. It is important we help these users, as each one of these early adopters could translate into hundreds, or even thousands, of users a few years from now.

I really hope that those Pump and Dump groups will not overbuy siacoin because that is not healthy.
Why sould price be not important. Price is everything but nothing thus shut the f....... up.
Excuse me, but this thread is mostly geared at the development side of Sia, not debating 6 year old P&D schemes etc. that everyone knows exist with all coins on any market... Please move along, I feel your wearing out your welcome here .

Lets emphasize everyone is welcome here. Vulgar language is not however. I think any topic is open for discussion, as long as its related to Sia. If its about the price and trading of Siacoin/fund, then there's a trading thread exactly for that.
104  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: December 23, 2015, 11:36:26 PM
Does anyone foresee Monero rallying back up this week.  Grin

What I can say is that the future of Monero is very bright. It seems many do not realize what we have here. It is nothing but amazing. It is freedom incarnate.

The US is increasing its ability to detect its citizens' funds abroad through FACTA. European countries, justified by a few crooks 'hiding' money in Swiss 'banks', are similarly stepping up their abuse of power in their quest to seize your property through excessive taxation which is slowly burying the continent in a state-sponsored plot to replace its indigenous population with a 2nd wave of monotheists, this one just as violent and dangerous as the previous one.

Terrible days are ahead, but Monero I think will stand out as one of the crucial tools of financial freedom. Forget about next week. Look 20 years ahead. Where would you rather have your money? In your state endorsed bank, or a cryptographically secured and anonymous network?

Interally, most datacenters do you 3 redundancy, by the way. Additionally, as you can see from our pricing we are able to compete on price, even at this early stage.

Still 3 times more space needed. Meaning, SIA hosts should level hosting prices being more than 3 times lower compared to existing cloud services. I don't think that profi high-capacity data centers could offer 4 times lower price. Hobby hosts could do that. And SIA needs many of them to be able to knock on Mega's door and say "look what capacity and price I can offer"...

Just a word on MEGA. Kim Dotcom lost his extradition case. Both him and very likely his closest collaborators may find themselves soon on a plane to the US. Also, he's basically broke. I've moved all my stuff of MEGA as I'm waiting for the house of cards to fall very soon. All the better for Sia of course. I think a lot of MEGA folks will start looking for alternative safe storage.

I am sorry that I post it in English but I was a lot of in Norge and Sverige so I very want to working with Scandinavians  Smiley

I offer bitcoin related web-projects development from scratch, so if somebody need a web-site or web-service related with bitcoin payments - feel free to PM me.

I also can implement bitcoin payments to your already working site.

Do you have any experience with altcoins? In particular Monero (XMR)? Or, willingness to learn?

I'm stuck at Block Height: 29071. Is there any way to download or speed up my blockchain?

The current block is 29176. You're not that far off. Did it sync further?

If not, and you in fact got stuck you may have to restart the deamon. I would restart siad from the command line:

Code:
./siac stop

then start the UI again. It should continue synchronizing the blockchain from where it left it.

Wanted to dedicate some terabyte for hosting, but can't:
Ports 9982 and 9981 already forwarded manually, so something wrong with wallet. Workaround for manual announcement is unusable, my IP is changing every day. Undecided
Don't host if your IP is changing daily; clients that upload to your host cannot retrieve files if your IP changes and then you will not be paid. Set up dynamic DNS, or get a fixed IP.

Thx for the clarification, but I doubt in expansion of SIA hosts with the fixed IP or dynamic DNS requirement...

Agreed. The developers have recently stated they may introduce a public key of sorts to identify hosts on the network, instead of using IP addresses or hostnames. Sooner the better.

You could try announcing from the command line:

Code:
siac host announce [hostname]:[port]

where [hostname] is your IP or hostname and [port] is the port Sia should listen on (this port may have to be forwarded to your PC).

110  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: December 16, 2015, 03:18:08 AM
I'm a user of Monero and Sia (blockchain-based, decentralized, encrypted cloud storage; currently in beta; see http://sia.tech)

The Siacoin, which is used to pay for storage on the Sia network, is currently traded on Poloniex. Trading is represented only by the BTC:SC currency pair. The current price of a Siacoin is 3-4 satoshis which means the spread is about 25%. The reason for the low price is a very large number of Siacoins in existence (there's a logic to it...) and low demand at present time. With such poor liquidity, there is an entry barrier for new users.

I've asked Poloniex to add the XMR:SC currency pair. This would improve liquidity and lower the barrier to trade Siacoins. FURTHERMORE, which is why I'm posting this here, it would mean XMR holders could directly buy (repeat) decentralized, encrypted storage on the Sia network.

I like the idea of decentralized cloud storage. How safe it is to store files there? I mean not from feds or police, but that my files will not disappear when someone decides to switch of their node or few nodes go off line or something.

Redundancy is built into Sia (via Reed Solomon erasure coding) meaning a large proportion of hosts can go offline without file loss. If a file is 'damaged' (i.e. redundancy is reduced but file is still retrievable) then the network will attempt to repair the file behind the scenes. Its pretty cool. There are alternatives to Sia, but I think the Sia developers are doing things right. They very much share the Monero developers mantra of "under-promise" and "over-deliver".

That being said, the Sia network is still in its infancy and the current deamon and client software is in beta, but you should definitely try it out and hang out in the forum at http://forum.sia.tech for updates (there are also a couple of threads here on Bitcointalk).

If you agree to this proposition, please let Poloniex know! I doubt they will listen to a single request of this kind, but perhaps with a few more votes they will see the logic in providing XMR:SC trading.
112  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: Siacoin Trading Thread on: December 16, 2015, 12:28:01 AM
Why would anyone buy Siacoin at 6 Satoshi if the best buyer is only 5 satoshi?
In percentage terms that is a very poor market.

The coin is still moving down too so it could easily get worse (in percentage terms).
If this situation is improved I will definitely buy some

I have asked Poloniex to add the XMR:SC currency pair. If they went ahead with that, liquidity would improve. If anyone feels the same, please send Poloniex a feature request to add XMR:SC.

XMR is also by the way a very cool cryptocurrency. Being able to trade XMR directly for Sia encrypted cloud storage would be great!

The coin showed some recovery on poloniex, now at least we are sure that it is attractive for investors.

Duh? Are you talking about Siacoin? What recovery? Its pretty close to rock bottom today. Not that that's a bad thing, from an investor perspective Smiley

To be fair, we should say that sia is in beta as well.
*Alpha*

Officially, beta.

Enlighten us!   Smiley
OR could be tied to sweeten other deals... I sell new and used computers. By a pc from me and receive 500,000 free SIAcoin for your cloud storage use. lol

This is the better of your ideas: Sell PCs bundled with pre-installed Sia and a wallet loaded with X coins for backing up files (or maybe have them come to you to claim their coins so you don't waste coins on your most clueless customers...)
116  Other / Off-topic / Crypto friendly, cross-platform dynamic DNS client on: December 14, 2015, 11:13:20 PM
Is there a crypty friendly dynamic DNS client out there, with cross-platform support (at the very least Windows, Linux and Mac).

By crypty friendly I mean that the provider accepts bitcoin or altcoins as payment.
117  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage - Working Beta - Currency has been released on: December 14, 2015, 11:00:43 PM
This coin traded at 40 sat, wow.

Somehow the high inflation rate reminds me on dgb. The coin supply seems very similar. And the thing is that with that coin supply, traders can make huge profits because a price drop of one unit results in a profit or loss of currently more than 25 %. This is just not healthy for the coin. This problem would vanish only when price moves up by the factor hundred or more.

Tbh we weren't really thinking about the price in those terms. What Poloniex could do is force you to trade 1000 siacoins at a time.

Poloniex could also allow trading XMR:SC, which would eliminate the price differential issue. I've asked Polo about it, without reply. Maybe if we go at them all at once they'll wake up to the possibility this would be healthy for SC trading.

Wouldn't it be great for Siacoin to have some form of Dropbox-esque solution for users?

I'd happily pay $10-20 USD a month just to have my primo-files safe via crypto and backed up for my convenience.

...would love to have a solution that I can trust to keep my personal files (i.e. doctors reports, passport scans, two-factor authentication backups, fingerprint scans, DNA scans, password backups etc) online and secure.

I trust cryptography to keep my files safe, but haven't found a provider who can keep this promise without the threat of being brought down by lawsuits from idiotic copyright dipshits.

...I'm asking for 1GB (at maximum) to keep my personal files safe in a 'locker' which can be updated at will.

Have you tried the Sia client? If you download it and run it, you'll find it already does pretty much what you want it to.

There will be 3rd party services coming soon, that will build on the Sia network and bring some features that are not planned for the Sia main project.
