I started thinking about this a bit too, here. I'm particularly interested in the idea that governments may have access to otherwise-undiscovered anti-crypto techniques, which while they couldn't employ them against a network overtly, may be useful in certain directed attacks, e.g. Large transactions, specific IPs or addresses etc. More likely, there's a possibility of targeting machines through trojans and other network attacks - recent South Korean events point at this, for instance. You wouldn't need to attack the network itself, but a coordinated attack against a particular pool, or country, might be effective enough to allow a different attack, or disrupt btc going into a region at a crucial moment. But I suspect we'll see a few states doing dumb stuff like insisting all wallets have to be "declared for tax purposes" (and tracking) first. If they're not doing that covertly already. |

Blockchain.info's design (javascript in the browser to decrypt a wallet file, plus open source js code) should mean the site operators can't access your wallet or spend your bitcoins. Throw in two-factor auth and a second password for spending (or paper wallets) and you're most safe against the operators.
Other sites may vary though. Plus you're still open to trojans on your pc/phone/etc.

This felt like one of the better pieces of coverage, IMHO - the Guardian audience will most likely have heard of Bitcoin vaguely, and probably in the context of SR, so good to see someone making counter points.
It's all a bit like when people started using email or Twitter, and media were writing pieces for readers who couldn't get their heads round new ways of doing useful stuff. Remember that Sun piece on the www being a fad?
The Guardian are probably the mainstream uk newspaper most likely to be dabbling with Bitcoin right now, even if just to see how it actually works.

Bug report - just sent some bitcoins from my wallet, but instead of the usual "Payment sent" email, I got a "Payment received" one. It looks like it links to the right transaction, but is reporting the change (coming back into a different address in the same wallet) instead of the address I sent to. (The other target address was also a blockchain wallet, if that's helpful).

Got all excited for a moment, thought I'd had a random donation...

Hey, I just got an idea! How about a total for the amount of payments due? Should be pretty simple to add.. kind of sucks having to add up each payment awaiting to be made from my investments just to figure out how much BTC I have coming to me.
Did this by hand last week. The total unpaid repayments was too depressing ;-) |

Nice job, bitcoinbitcoin113 - and is it possible to automate to generate an auto-updating image file? This was Spekulatius' other request to make the job a little easier.
On a side note, I did like Spek's summary of 'interesting new entries' too, would love to see more of that...
