101  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][EMC2] Einsteinium | Funding the Future With the Future of Currency on: April 03, 2014, 09:05:55 PM
I think the best course of action is to stay on Scrypt but have a backup plan ready to be implemented.

This is the general attitude right now among our developers as well.
Not everybody can afford a $10k Rig, but the $10K rig might not come as soon as many people think, and there may be intermediate steps along the way that build up network hash rates.
Also our Devs did technically evaluate X11 in depth, including a great deal of testing, and before the litecoin team even posted they provided those of us who are on the foundation with similar input to what litecoin provided.
We have to be cautious because forking the coin in that way is a significant technical burden, but also presents significant risks.

There is also an additional point...from an economic perspective in terms of problems, the issues with the larger scale scrypt ASICs would only rear their heads if they began to show un in the next few weeks on the network in the form of manufacturers mining farms, then switching the algo would make more sense. While this is a possibility with their delivery dates, it's unlikely. The more likely situation is a gradual increase over time, and the larger miners coming out in QIII.  What we are seeing now in terms of ASICs is gridseeds, which are pretty beneficial for everybody. Gridseed represents gradual asic introduction. Nobody is scared of their 5.4 M/hs blade likely to come out very soon either. Again, it's a good example of gradual ASIC adoption...which is fine.
The larger miners, such as Titan, are only problematic if it is suddenly introduced to the network in the next few weeks through large manufacturer driven mining farms. I think this is where the core fear of ASICs reside. However, if they begin to show up six months from now, it would likely benefit our network because of gradual growth elsewhere.

They are keeping X11 as an option in case the large scale ASIC farm is introduced to early, but ASICs after a couple of halvings and a gradual introduction can actually help the coin and secure the network. It is only when it is at the start of a coins lifecycle does it present a problem. Our early halving schedule is rather agressive though early on, two within a four month period. So our risk period is very limited. Even if X11 does get integrated, it is only with the expectation of delaying the introduction of larger ASICs, not eliminating them. X11 would be very easy to produce ASICs for if it popularizes, easier than scrypt was. Not to mention the potential botnet problem that X11 has.

We do want larger ASICs eventually, but there is only harm if they come to early, and there are benefits if they come down the line and gradually, big benefits. Two weeks from now it is a different scenario, but a highly unlikely scenario. It is likely though we will go through at least a couple of halvings before they even begin to show up.

These were long discussions with Development. I wish more people realized just how long an epoch is, and how agressive halving is in the first year. While I am more in favor of X11 (I am not dev though), my only issue with ASICs, is if the big ones come too suddenly in our lifecycle. I am increasingly skeptical about an early introduction happening.

Additionally, the next 3 months if you are a GPU miner will be the best time to mine no matter the direction. You are going to see the biggest rewards from it now anyway, after the first two halvings, it increasingly becomes fighting for scraps and waiting for wormholes, no matter the algorithm, coins become more rare quickly.

Remember, if there is a higher hashrate, it's a more secure network, the only problem comes if that hashrate is all in one place.

Hey guys, I've mentioned you in our first newsletter : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=554261.msg6034434#msg6034434

Thanks for the kind words, were not 100% sure if were going to switch algos but we have been testing X11 for a while now.

I wish you luck with your coin and we'll keep you posted on any developments as they arise.

Thanks again.

I hope you don't switch. I like this coin but will not mine it any longer if you switch to X11

Our devs priority now is the KGW fix, any other development decisions have been put into the backburner.

I have a million dogecoin. I got it when it was $0.25/1000. I will hold. It is more of an experiment then an investment.

Some news.
We are doing a small fundraiser to put our first winner over the top, and to raise some funding outside of the monthly foundation award.
This is the EMC2 wallet address for the fundraiser: EQohirsM7K4iN9h4JFrVSHf4JCMgvdxrNs
The goal is 250,000 EMC2 based on current prices.

Thanks
The Einsteinium Foundation
Great idea! Donated some blocks Smiley
Einsteinium is fucking awesome! A sweet dev team, a great purpose and great community. We will do big things together

We met our goal plus some! I am going to close this tomorrow.
Honestly, this is a great community.

That's some nice buy pressure!

Which exchange is this from? Theres only 4 buy order on Allcoin, did people move from there?

It's poloniex, it is the exchange were we get the most volume. They adopted us about 1 1/2 after we launched and we have had growing volume there ever since. It's not a bad exchange by any means. But I actually think it represents the tip of the iceberg of what is possible (ie please vote for us on mintpal/cryptsy).

Is Cryptorush even worth saving. It was kind of sketchy and buggy from the start.

What is being done about the Kimoto Gravity Well Time Warp exploit?

Has anyone talked to the AUR devs to see their fix?

BCX may well attack EMC2. There was talk about picking a target.

Our developers are looking at it.

We met our goal in a single afternoon!  Shocked

Also this gives us MAJOR credibility points with experiment.com, which is going to be an important relationship going forward. They REALLY like us right now.

I am so glad I only used the exchange for dumping PoS coins. Always striked me as problematic.
111  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][EMC2] Einsteinium | Funding the Future With the Future of Currency on: April 01, 2014, 06:14:21 PM
Wow this is going fast...it seems like experiment.com is going to be putting up a page for this fundraiser too. This could be the start of a beautiful relationship for Einsteinium, they are potentially a major partner for our science funding mission.

Will somebody remove cryptorush voting, they just went insolvent.

Just to remind people, the halving is coming later this month when the epoch ends. This is the best time there will be to mine EMC2.
114  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: getting my head around ripple - please correct me. on: March 31, 2014, 06:33:02 PM
It's a scam that shouldn't even be listed on coin market cap.
115  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][EMC2] Einsteinium | Funding the Future With the Future of Currency on: March 31, 2014, 02:09:20 AM
Sorry if I've missed it but have you already donated to Walter Moss ? I see https://experiment.com/users/ChristinePaluch has already done so - was it a private donation or did it come from the Einsteinium foundation. How did you actually do it - was it a credit card donation as mentioned previously , did you calculate the USD amount based on the current EMC2 rates , something else?

TIA

Hi Tia, Great questions. Christine did make a $1000 donation on behalf of the foundation on creditcard. As were still waiting on the incorporation papers and bank accounts It may work this way for at least the next epoch.

The value of the coins were less the $1000USD but we as a team decided that we would split the coins up between us and juts make a donation of $1000USD.

Hope this answered your questions.

One more thing this is just 1/2 of the epoch 1 coins, 1/2 will be rolled over. We were not too thrilled with the current market prices, we wanted to give more then what market prices were saying this would work. Also we didn't want to jump through the normal hoops.

116  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][EMC2] Einsteinium | Funding the Future With the Future of Currency on: March 30, 2014, 05:26:48 AM
In regards to what? I'm not on the dev team, but I'm pretty sure they're working on getting press releases out on the first winner as well as internally discussing and testing out the idea of switching the ECM2 algo to x11. Besides that I'm sure our own forum is being worked on little by little as well.

besides those things, I think we just keep doing what we have been doing. Lets go through with epoch 2 and pick another winner and go through that donation phase. Hopefully after that point, more interest will be generated driving the price up some.

We are working on a relationship with experiment.com, the door has been opened and they are responding to emails.

Okay this is a little bit of analysis. Pros and cons of forks, and each algorithm.

X11
Advantages.
1. It is easy to set up for a miner.
2. ASICs are at least a year away.
3. It is GPU friendly
4. The inefficiencies of the algorithm actually bring advantages in terms of power savings.

Disadvantages.
1. Botnets are a risk. Darkwave should be implemented with it to prevent both botnets and multipools.
2. We have to rewrite everything
3. The fake hash vulnerability posted above.

Neutral
1.. ASICs will come if it becomes popular. This is not a bad thing later in the coins lifecycle.

Scrypt

1. It's easy to mine.
2. We don't need to do anything

Disadvantage
1. ASICs, and more specifically ASIC farms by the manufacturers early in the coins lifecycle. This can reduce our community size and also present problems for the network early in our life cycle.

Scrypt-N/Scrypt Jane
Advantage
1. ASIC resistant for now.

Disadvantage
1. It is hard to setup miners and we are looking to broaden our community.

Neutral.
1. Nothing is ASIC proof, ASICs will come if it is popularized, even with adjustments.

There are other options too worth exploring.

Because of our halving schedule ASIC resistance is not needed forever. Our halving schedule is aggressive enough were it is not a permanent problem. There are also other alternatives as well, which are not being discussed. Such as possibly adding another layer, like Gridcoin.

Hopefully this is helpful.

Are the coins mined so far safe after this planned fork?

The fork isn't planned yet. They are exploring the possibility. Part of this exploration is determine how best to preserve the blockchain and make sure people keep the coins they have mined so far. (this is what derbrause has posted above.)
119  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][EMC2] Einsteinium | Funding the Future With the Future of Currency on: March 29, 2014, 02:48:31 PM
hope dev team prepared a press release about the winner of the first epoch)

That would be our marketing team. The press release is ready, it just needs to be sent out.

We leave our dev team to the dev stuff, which as you can tell...they are rather busy.
120  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][EMC2] Einsteinium | Funding the Future With the Future of Currency on: March 29, 2014, 03:42:42 AM
No algorithm is asic proof indefinitely. People need to come to accept that.  If we do fork it will be a one time thing to avoid the more immanent vulnerability and take the opportunity to grow the community. Later in a coins lifecycle a coin can benefit from ASICs as it keeps the network in place. We are very early in our lifecycle though.

thats a good point it is possible that scrypt could just live on with pure ASIC mining like BTC but since these are alt coins who knows how they will react.

Dogecoin, Litecoin, Peercoin, absolutely, and there is nothing wrong with that. They have all matured, Dogecoin rather quickly actually. Not all scrypt coins need to change, nor should they. Again coin maturity is a big factor in this.
