Vaccines will be administered to Air Mauritius employees, as well as airport and hotel staff, and even tour guides.

Greece Preparing 10 Year Strategic Plan For Tourism

12 February, tourism minister of Greece, Harry Theoharis announced his department’s strategic planning initiative for the next 10 years.

“Our main goal, both for 2021 and in the long run, is to attract all markets and mitigate seasonality," Theoharis underlined in his address at the 13-th regional tourism council. Theoharis explained that the three pillars for opening up tourism will be the promotional campaign, internal health protocols, and travel protocols.

Theoharis has also pointed out that “now is the opportunity to take advantage of the successful opening of tourism and the good image our country has abroad”. He stressed that "this year will be better than last year, as the vaccination will proceed”. He also referred to the launch of the strategy of the ministry's 10-year plan in the midst of a particularly difficult year, in terms of the challenges and competition.

Saudi Arabia To Build Dolphin-Shaped Island Resort

His Royal Highness Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, chairman of The Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC) has greenlit the construction of a resort on the Shurayrah island. The first phase of The Red Sea Project is due in 2023. The resort will span over 28,000 square kilometers and is set to become the largest regenerative tourism project in the world. The first phase includes opening an international airport and four hotels.

The project builds upon the unique Saudi Arabian nature, and preserving it is paramount to the design of the project.

This way the project includes creating new beaches along with a man-made laguna on an island shaped to look like a dolphin. Special landscape design will ensure the waterline stays where it is supposed to be, preventing floods and erosion, while also improving the island’s environment.

Dubai Building Over 150 Hotels

More than 150 hotels are currently at different stages of completion in Dubai despite the pandemic.

In 2021 alone, 79 new hospitality facilities will open, providing some 26,168 rooms to the room supply.

One of the most ambitious projects is Ciel Tower, a 360-meter tall building on the coast of Dubai. An 82-meter hotel for 1209 rooms will open its doors to visitors in 2023. In total, Dubai will see 48,410 new hotel rooms.

34 hotels for 8860 rooms will be opened in 2022, 11 more – in 2023, and 29 – in 2024 and  the following years. 76 hotels will be four star, 77 – five star.

One of the largest projects are four new hotels from the Millennium Hotels group, for 1715 rooms.

The Yas island in Abu Dhabi is preparing to open the world’s first Warner Bros themed hotel in Q4 2021.

EU Estimates Mass Tourism Reopening

German authorities have announced their estimates for the recovery of mass tourism. Thanks to mass vaccination programs and express tests, this can happen by early summer. This means the initial estimates of the tourism sector recovery in the EU have been too grim, and have since changed to be more optimistic. Previously, authorities have discussed measures to reboot the tourism sector by autumn.


The German media quotes Thomas Bareiss, Federal Government’s Commissioner for Tourism, as saying: “Tourists will have the opportunity to spend vacations in Germany and other EU countries in June and July. Other countries will follow suit later.”

Mr. Bareiss has noted that we can expect the first restrictions to be lifted after the Easter holidays, which is a little less than two months away (4 April). In pre-covid times, German tourists traditionally travelled during that period. However, this year they can expect to start travelling no earlier than 23 May, this is the day all domestic travel is expected to be allowed without restrictions. This may become an additional incentive for domestic tourists to travel.

Experts point out that this summer will see a bump in travelling across Europe. The backlog of demand will lead to a surge in activity. This boom might turn out to be so significant that the tourism industry might even cover the financial losses it suffered last year.

Greece Hopes To Open Borders

Greece is eyeing plans to open the country for tourists from all over the world by June 1, with a new “safe travel” plan that will let visitors bypass quarantine restrictions. Tourists must provide a recent negative coronavirus test, however.

Grigoris Tassios, president of the country's hoteliers federation, commented on the situation by saying: “with the rate of inoculations in the U.K. largely outpacing all others across Europe and beyond, British travelers will be among the safest to travel here by as early as May”.

Greece has been watching Israel’s mass inoculation program, since this country has been showing the highest rates of vaccination in the world. If the Greek government sees that mass vaccination works to maintain herd immunity, the authorities will put every effort into opening the country’s resorts as early as possible, since Greece has also started its own mass vaccination campaign, prioritizing tourism industry employees.

Domestic Tourism Recovery Rate Soars In Russia

Russia is now in the top three European countries in terms of domestic tourism recovery rate. This comes from the head advisor for Rosturism, Yulia Rybakova. She mentioned that while the economic downturn and pandemic restrictions have caused a decline in tourist inflow, domestic tourism has got an opportunity to grow.

In December, London, Paris and Madrid hotel occupancy rates floated around 20%. Rome and Berlin saw even smaller figures — 11%. Moscow, on the other hand, was enjoying 44% hotel occupancy that month.

The Russian hospitality industry has managed to generate 60% of revenue compared with last year. Rybakova has also noted that Russian authorities are planning to implement new types of tourism — artisan, railroad, arctic, environmental. Among other countries enjoying a high domestic tourism recovery rate are Italy and France.

More and more countries announce their readiness to permit vaccinated tourists to enter without restrictions.

This month a total of three countries announced that they are open to COVID-vaccinated tourists.

Seychelles, where vaccination has already begun, report that tourism restrictions are ready to be relaxed. Iceland has ruled out the quarantine requirement for vaccinated visitors who provide a certificate of vaccination with a WHO-approved vaccine. The country’s citizens, however, get digital certificates upon vaccinating against COVID-19.

Romania has also announced that its borders are open to those foreign visitors who have completed the full vaccination program.

Cyprus authorities are also eyeing to lift the restrictions on EU-certified vaccinated tourists as part of their international travel launch scheduled on March the 1st. Tourists from any of the countries included in the program are eligible for simplified entry.

The Republic of Mauritius authorities have announced that vaccinated visitors don’t have to be quarantined for 14 days, as opposed to the unvaccinated.

Other countries are also negotiating entry rules for vaccinated tourists.

This statement comes from the general secretary of the UN World Tourism Organization, Zurab Pololikashvili. He noted that each country has its own set of restrictions that change on a weekly and even daily basis.

He believes that vaccination will speed up the recovery of the tourism sector, and compared to the catastrophic results of last year, the summer of 2021 should be much brighter. This will require greater coordination between countries.

Establishing common rules will also prove to be beneficial, albeit difficult, said the secretary general of the World Tourism Organization. According to the UN, last year the global tourism industry lost $1.3 trillion US.

World Tourism Crisis Will Go No Earlier Than 2023 — World Tourism Organisation

World Tourism Organisation — a specialized UN department aimed at promoting sustainable and inclusive tourism. The organization hopes that the gradual coronavirus vaccination rollout will provide ground for relaxing travel restrictions during 2021.

According to WTO estimates, international tourism will be able to go back to the pre-corona scale no earlier than in 2 years.

As the WTO data suggests, in 2020 the tourism industry lost $1.3 trillion. The report claims international travel dropped 74%. The number of tourists travelling internationally dropped by 1 billion people compared to the previous year’s figure.

In the meantime, the report states that most experts don’t expect the industry to come back to the pre-pandemic levels in 2023; 41% of those surveyed believe that a return to 2019 levels will only happen in 2024 or later.

Dubai Hotels Banned From Running Live Entertainment

January 21, Dubai’s tourism department banned all live entertainment at hotels and restaurants due to a surge in COVID-19 cases and lack of adherence to the safety requirements by tourists, says The Economic Times.

Restrictions will remain in place until further notice, says the tourism and commercial marketing department of Dubai.

Although bars and restaurants would remain open for the time being, Dubai's media office said it would pause the issuance of new entertainment permits to venues effective immediately to ensure "public health and safety." Since reopening in the spring, the commercial hub has resisted more restrictions. Hotel occupancy rates surged over 70% in December, nearing 2019 holiday levels. The city's airport welcomed over 70,000 travelers for New Year's weekend alone.

Soon countries like the United Kingdom and Israel that had sent droves to Dubai over the winter holidays closed their travel corridors, citing alarm over the UAE's spike in infections. More restrictions will inevitably hurt its economy, built largely on aviation, hospitality and retail, says The Economic Times.

Hostel Owners Might Get To Develop Business In Russian Residential Areas

Russian Ministry of Agriculture has endorsed the idea of the State Duma to legalize hotels in non-urban residential areas.

"We have gone too far with banning small hotels. This way we are reducing the room supply, smothering the very businesses that could grow our domestic tourism sector”, said state senator Valery Ryazanskiy.

The Federation Council has also agreed with the idea to review the current policy. They admit that it was a premature move that should be rectified. Previously, on the 1st of October 2019, Russian businesses were banned from using residential real estate as hotels. To resolve this issue the authorities will create a specialized task force.
