101  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: LinuxCoin A lightweight Debian based OS with everything ready to go. on: July 11, 2011, 04:29:02 PM
i believe ive tried both
but i don't think the problem lies with the USB stick or how i used the iso, but with the PC since it does work on my main PC
il just fiddle some more with the BIOS, maybe il find something...
102  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: LinuxCoin A lightweight Debian based OS with everything ready to go. on: July 11, 2011, 02:18:40 PM
i'l try, but i dont think itl work since ive done that 3 times already
plus, it DOES work on my main PC
sounds like something's wrong with the miner or something, compatibility or something like that?

well, thats kinda odd...
i have 2 USB sticks of 8GB, a kingston and a sandisk
when i put linuxcoin on the sandisk, i get the error above, but using the kingston i get "bootmgr is missing press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart"
they have the exact same version of it using unetbootin...

are there other programs like unetbootin to try so that's ruled out?

il try a standard ubuntu, see if that works...
yeah... that wont work either: still bootmgr missing...
103  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: LinuxCoin A lightweight Debian based OS with everything ready to go. on: July 11, 2011, 01:31:15 PM
allright, i selected the USB stick and it gives me a different error now:
ERROR: No configuration file found
no DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found!
boot:

i can type stuff after boot:
aparantly it wants a kernel or something, whenever i type something there it says "could not find kernel image: xxx"
104  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: LinuxCoin A lightweight Debian based OS with everything ready to go. on: July 11, 2011, 12:37:26 PM
i have a problem, and i just can't seem to get it to work
i've used unetbootin to create a bootable USB stick, but it wont work on my miner :S
but, it DOES work on my main PC

when i set a windows instalation on that USB stick, it lists under "HDD" in the bios, but when i use linuxcoin, it lists under "removable media"
so, i set boot priority to removable media, and it just skips it and tries the HDD (wich wont work, no OS there)
now, when i disconnect the HDD, it just says "DISK BOOK FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"
i have no clue whatsoever what's causing this as it works fine on my main computer, and the miner recognizes windows from the same USB stick

i've tried switching ports for the USB stick, tried a second stick, resetting the bios to factory and having only removable media as a boot option

the motherboard of the miner is: Asus A8N5X

help would be much appreciated!

prolly a DDOS attack on your pool's servers
just switch pools in that cases (there are ways to make it auto-switch to a backup if main is offline for X minutes)

Does it come with that gorgeous cat or is that an extra?

please don't blow cats out the window, it's not good for their fur.

totally offtopic, but thanks for my morning lol  Smiley

110  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: how much Ghash you need to solo mining? on: June 29, 2011, 03:23:15 PM
well, totally depends on what kinda person you are and how much luck you have

ive heard people suggesting 30+ Ghash/s alot though

but even with that it could take months if your unlucky, wich inevitably you will be somewhere around
111  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: I think my 5970 should be working harder than it is. on: June 29, 2011, 03:21:52 PM
i always thought this page is undervalued/used

i try to aim for the top 3 mostly, if i can get around those numbers i think ive pretty much maxed the card
112  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Cards running soooooo slow on: June 29, 2011, 03:16:44 PM
more info about hardware and OS would be helpful
also, how much Mhash/s were you doing before?

also, dunno if you are but dont use the crossfire cables
113  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: hey miners whats your price to dump a large ammout of BTC on market ? on: June 29, 2011, 03:12:28 PM
simple: any time when i reach the break-even point on my hardware and its above 15 or 20 dollar each

then all the BTC after that is PROFIT Cheesy
not taking in electricity for sake of simplicity right now Smiley

deleted alot of quotes cuz its getting too damn long xD

I'm thinking maybe with micropayments like the example with the beer you could actually allow unconfirmed payments, I mean, most people wouldn't risk having problems just to steel a beer.

Haven't done that many transactions yet, but what if you raise the transaction-fee a lot (while still keeping it lower than for example creditcard-fees). How fast would you get confirmations?

that sounds right, BUT the problem is that when your on a night clubbing, you dont drink one beer and go home (im told, i dont drink myself Wink)
also, if its possible, then it could become common practise, and altough 1 beer isnt that much, 100, or even 1000 is...
only trusted customers could pay with bitcoins if it's going to be offline

what may be possible though, is for the bar having a computer linked to the internet (or a wifi hotspot for the customer's phone) so that if you use bitcoins with your offline phone, the system can check the thing as valid
ofcourse, it still needs to go faster than what it's currently doing (<10 sec) so you dont have to wait eternally for your beer

i think that might just solve it: a PC that is connected to the internet where you pay to with your offline phone, i doubt much stores these days don't have internet so thats taken care of allready

and maybe a way to speed things up with paying is that as soon as you enter the store and your phone picks up that its possible to pay with bitcoins there, it sends a message to the computer saying something like "my wallet has 100 USD in it, please confirm this with the network"

then the computer goes to work while you shop (check pants or something) and by the time you reach checkout, the PC has confirmed that you indeed have 100USD and is ready to accept payment up to 100USD

thoughts?

117  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: maximizing mining on your workstation without slowing down youtube or games! on: June 28, 2011, 11:27:24 PM
I use aggression 8 on my 5830 in my normal use PC and I can watch youtube/VLC videos no problem.
same here, but as i posted in the OP, that decreases the Mhash/s a little (without youtube or anything on)

I just have multiple Phoenix .bats in my Phoenix folder for different purposes. One called Full.bat for high aggression when I won't use the computer at all, one called Use.bat for when I'm using the computer but not for anything particularly intensive, and one called Perf.bat for gaming and the like.
I also have a Namecoin.bat for mining Namecoins.
interesting, does that switch automatically, or do you still gotta click some buttons?
Nope. Use.bat starts automatically on boot, if I want to switch I have to close the miner and start the appropriate .bat
well then, my option makes it 1 click in, and 1click out Smiley

You can also switch of hardware acceleration for flash videos(rightclick video at youtube, settings and uncheck it), so the CPU does the work for flash instead of GPU. Works fine.
true, but that doesnt work for normal videos, or games
gonna do it anyway, cuz it still eats away Mhash, thanks for the tip!

edit: tried superwebs tip, doesnt work for me: as soon as i turn on the mining, youtube slows down, also after unchecking hardware acceleration in firefox

nice one guys! Cheesy
120  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / maximizing mining on your workstation without slowing down youtube or games! on: June 28, 2011, 08:46:55 PM
allright, to introduce why i thought of this:
im currently mining on my workstation/game machine, using an HD5770

problem is, if i set my aggression too low (<Cool the Mhash/s goes down about 10, and if you're doing 208, thats alot
if i set it too high (>Cool youtube vids, games, movies and shows, everything that requires GPU gets slowed down

untill now, i just stopped mining every time i watched a youtube vid or something, but youtube doesnt take 100% of my GPU (thank god!) so alot of Mhash went wasted whenever i did something like that
so i came up with a solution
basically, we're going to set up a second miner, that has a far lower aggresion, that will mine whenever you are watching a movie, are gaming or whatnot so that spare GPU power doesnt go wasted
this way, im getting 80~90% of GPU load whenever im watching a youtube vid, instead of 0~1%

also, you could setup the second miner on a different pool, so whenever your main goes down, the second will go on (iknow there are more sophisticated options for this, but this is quick 'n easy)

so here's a picture of a step by step:

simple, no?

ofcourse this is in GUIminer, but im sure its not too hard to duplicate in other miners

so, any thoughts, questions, or comments; HIT ME!

also, if you think this is usefull, please send me a thank you on: 1MyYDvhGtm4SQA52WhFaBjyYKHvCsFrjw7
