101  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: June 09, 2015, 08:10:24 AM

I wanted to make 0.004'ish a floor but failed thanks to the lack of community support so I dumped AFTER I got an answear from the community that they do not support that price. If others do not support, why should I?

Perhaps that's because the monero community is not a pump and dump group, let alone your pump and dump group.

^Isn't it a POS coin with no other possible world uses than that? Why do we need a different coin for that single purpose?
Yeah, gridcoin exists, but I kinda get what you're saying and may want to expand on it.

One interesting option for Monero (because its one of the few (if not the only) CPU + GPU mineable coins thats worth a damn right now), would be for mining software to switch from Monero to Boinc... and yes, this hybrid BOINC client would be coupled with some type of Monero payment.

So, say you have a rig that pulls in 10 kh/s. You normally mine monero, and there's an estimated rate of return Y (based on hashrate and network diff). However, your Monero-Boinc hybrid client detects that there's a paying job on the Boinc network, with a guaranteed payout of X Monero. In your hybrid mining client, you have a setting somewhere that says "switch to BOINC if X > Y" or one that says " if X / Y >= 1.3". If the job satisfies these requirements, your hardware switches to folding some protein or running a Monte Carlo sandwich. When the jobs done, you switch back to Monero.

Interesting. Could get BOINCers into Monero, and could get scientists into Monero. You know how long it takes things on ROBETTA to run? The damn cue is over a month right now. And it has a cap of 1000 amino acids. WTF?

The WTF chill creeping my skin - I get almost anytime thinking about POW. Power ... wasted.

Well BOINC cannot reduce that, it's still electricity transformed into heat, just with some little additional output of scientific knowledge going alongside.
My practice looks like ballancing 2 threads for XMR mining and 1~2 threads into BOINC on a quadcore, plus 1 instance of a GRC wallet syncing somewhere (not needed to run that with redundance). That bottleneck, 4 threads would not produce more hashrate than 2 are capable of.

Inside the BOINC network, all calculations are done several times again, by different people. Just to assure statistical compareability. Checking the outputs, and if they match, the calculation should have been valid. It is that kind of computing work that does not immediately solve into a simply quotation.

On [GRC] they deliberately have choosen POS as a power consumption reduced mechanism for guaranteeing the blockchain security. Former algorithm was scrypt and that reduced the ballance down onto almost 50% electricity still evaporating for blockchain security.

I doubt XMR fits in there nicely. Very different worlds.

Computing heat does not need to be wasted heat. See this for an interesting modern idea:
http://www.nerdalize.com/

Quote
By placing high performance servers in homes Nerdalize creates highly distributed compute cloud without the overhead cost of conventional cloud and co-location solutions. This creates a triple-win where sustainable computing power becomes an affordable commodity, homes are heated for free and emissions are drastically reduced!

I would love to see this approach adopted in crypto mining.

How can I make monero who guides me thanks

Mining? Buying? Working for? The first page of this thread might provide some of the pointers you are looking for.

So, my wife and I are thinking of moving. We were going to rent again, but then I thought perhaps I could provide a great investment opportunity for some of the uber whales of MoneroWorld and add market pressure for Monero at the same time.

This would also have the nice benefit of not putting more money into the banking system via a mortgage.

So, details could be worked out, but it could be as simple as a personal loan. We'd agree that the monthly payments would be in Monero (so I'd be buying X monero every month with fiat), some annual interest percentage, and we could also work in somewhere that if Monero valuation skyrockets, I'd agree to return up to some percentage of the increased valuation. Because I get it - everyone wants to hodl because price will moon, but we need to actually use it as a currency.

And I could also guarantee that I'd run a mining operation in the home to support the network Smiley

Just thought I'd put that out there.

I am not quite clear what you are asking for here GA.

(1) Somebody lends you a chunk of XMR and you pay them back in monthly payments of XMR with interest
or
(2) Somebody lends you a chunk of XMR and you pay them back in another currency

Borrowing a large amount in a currency other than the one you earn is generally a highly risky business, especially for a volatile crypto-currencies. There are enough problems in various European countries right now where borrowers took out mortgage loans denominated in Swiss Francs, and then the value of the Swiss franc appreciated...

EDIT: I think you mean (1), and then the big risk if XMR appreciates is that you would be forced to default on the loan (like the Swiss franc problem, only worse). I suppose someone might see a loan as a reasonable hedge against the XMR price falling/stagnating (if it moonshoots, the rest of their stack would more than cover any losses). Still, it would be a very risky investment due to the currency volatility, and should consequently carry a massive interest rate to cover that (which would then make it unattractive to you). Just my 0.02 XMR.

Problem is sparse either doesn't work on Windows (or Mac, I think), or doesn't work well, at least in some configurations. Nevertheless this will be addressed once the ability to expand the database is added. Then the starting size can be backed off., at least for non-sparse deployments.

Regarding sparse files, is this an LMDB issue or a more general file system issue?

There does seem to be sparse file support in windows, but it is dependent on the file system:

I have an old wallet that had a bunch of dust transactions from early mining, plus a bunch of small transactions (mostly 0.5 XMR) from later mining, plus some big transactions from exchange payouts. Now, I decided to move it all to a new wallet, to consolidate the dust and small transactions, and also have the mnemonic seed. I couldn't send it all as one transaction, and had to break it up into about ten different transactions. No problem.

However, at the end, I have about 3.5 XMR that wouldn't send at all as the transaction fee(s) would be too large. I think this is the dust. Now I know 3.5 XMR is not a lot, but will dust be forever useless/unavailable? Is this a fungibility problem? It seems these 3.5 XMR are not as good as (interchangeable with) another 3.5 XMR.

Is there any way to consolidate Monero dust into Monero nuggets?

I think they have been busy fixing all the bugs and utilizing everything for the 0.8.8.7. Also, GingerAle is handling the missives (or atleast the editing etc.) if I recall correctly.

The LMDB release should be tagged 0.9 IMHO. Major update.

PS, why I hide the balance, that is of course the million dollar question Kiss

I'd like to know why the screenshots always show BTC balances of exactly zero. Call it the one Satoshi question if you will.  Smiley
109  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: March 27, 2015, 03:31:54 PM
If the emission curve puts us at just under 16,000 XMR per day - https://moneroeconomy.com/wiki/emission-rate,
we will be at roughly at 11,000 at the end of 2015, then 6500 at end of 2016. (I think I read 80% of the emission occurs in the first 4 years, so 3 years left.)
XMR are disappearing and quick.

16,000 XMR at .003 costs about 48 BTC per day. That is pretty much nothing considering this market is just starting (and even in USD). I don't think that kind of buy support is difficult to attain.
As long as we keep getting volume and attention, I think the price should steadily increase (as long as whales help!).

Consider, more people are coming into the field and in 8 months or so the emission will decrease by around 31% but demand probably will grow. Just do the math, excluding outside
forces (e.g. other coins, economic collapse, legal issues, etc.) and we should be ok. Just taking into account the current demand sustaining and yet the supply decreasing, we should experience
stable growth (as long as we don't go above a fair valuation. .003 is for sure not overvalued. We can probably hit .01 BTC and still be undervalued, at current BTC prices.

I'm curious, those of you more familiar with this area, what are your thoughts regarding the variables involved (e.g. reduction in emission, miners, whales, regular "Joes", price points, etc.)?
How do you see things going forward?

IAS

Excluding tail emissions, half of the total supply will be emitted by the start of September. I think that will be a significant point in the market.

Regular Joe awareness and acceptance is a long way away. Even BTC has only some of the former, and very little of the latter. Easy Fiat/XMR exchange mechanisms would be a pre-requisite for broader usage IMHO.

In the short term, I think DRK/Dash prominence and price pumping can be a good thing for XMR. It's exactly how I found Monero in June 2014. A friend mentioned DRK so I went and checked it out, and bought Monero instead.

Just my .02 XMR, Q

Guess I'll just have to wait for the next whale dump to get back in.

Whales are accumulating. The miners dump. I don't rule out a miner dump but in this environment with brisk demand that is pretty needless.

If I needed to sell 50k, it would not be hard to do. And if I needed to sell my produce, there would be no need to accumulate 50k before selling.

These are clearly evident in the recent days when lows have been rising quicker than the highs.

There will always be a whale dump to accumulate lower. You know this. Sometimes it will even cause panic selling. Wait didn't we just go through one of those?

I know many things, including that it takes about 3x overvaluation to be able to safely sell something and actually gain money whale scale. BTC has been in this situation 3 times during its history, I spotted all of them, in the first one actively refused to buy (bought later at $3), second one had time to sell for 1 day until it toppled and third one bought a castle. These I know. Monero has never been such overvalued.

I think it was 3x overvalued, and probably more than that when it was 0.01 and extremely immature with no track record. That was only for a short time, but long enough for me to sell more than once.

No this was not whale scale, but nothing about Monero is really, although that was the closest we got.

I agree. It would have been better if the price had stayed below 0.005 in June 2014, if only so that people didn't think a one week spike in price was representative of anything solid.
112  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: March 26, 2015, 10:22:59 AM
Only 170 BTC to reach 0.004 on Poloneix. 360 BTC of sells to get to 0.002. Market depth for bids is pretty solid too, especially compared to ask depth. It's looking to continue its steady uptrend this week Smiley

Battle Royale at Poloniex over the 0.003 border. Nearly 350 BTC of action in the last 24 hours, with little movement. Interesting.

Whats to explain. Thats how i feel about your project. Yes I'm on the monero side, that's no secret, but i never said anything negative about your project in your own house. I never said what you linked or anything even remotely like what you linked in your thread. I wouldn't be disrespectful like that. You wouldn't argue that having disagreements with your project innately makes me a troll even though i never expressed them even once in your thread, would you?

I'm a Monero supporter, as I am sure you know, but it sounds like you're saying:

"I wouldn't call someone a **** to his face. I wouldn't be disrespectful like that. So, instead I made a page calling him a **** on the internet and then sent him a link to the page. Then he put me on ignore - what an overreaction!"

This is looking prime for something to happen tonight!!!

I'm expecting a stable breakthrough into the 003 to 004 range soon. That will be an important consolidation zone and I expect the price will stay there for a while. A move towards 005 would be much more of a game changer.

Nice. Anyone else?

About 100 players on CryptoKingdom.

I don't speak for anyone as a group, just noting that the sentiment seems to be that many are still in the process of accumulating XMR and they are also addicted to spending XMR in CK.

Just bought another chunk of XMR. I am nearly at a satisfying core position, with plenty invested into CK as well. I play that game daily, perhaps a few hours too many per day  Grin

It is so much more fun  to trade CK minted coins with friends than sit on a hoard of XMR. Makes this time we need to wait for the masses amazingly fun. Kudos to Risto and all the other players for making it the wonderful experience it is. However, the best is yet to come.

All this and I can keep invested in XMR for the coming rise at the same time!

It's good to have you aboard sphericon. You seem to be one of the keen 2nd gen investors fueling the recent price rises.

Just a reminder I am still managing donations.  Recent pull requests have been sent for donations and are constantly reflected on this page:

https://getmonero.org/getting-started/donate/hall-of-fame

Don't stop donating... I hear a DB build is not too far off...

I'll be sending 500 in when the DB release is out, and another 500 when the official GUI lands.
Cheers, Q
