101  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PAYPAL SCAM ALERT, scammer is John Binns and paypal. on: July 04, 2011, 02:18:08 AM
YOUR MONEY IS GONE.

Have you ever heard of a deal that was TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE?!?

I saw you guys selling your Bitcoins on eBay and warned you a few weeks ago too...

You were selling BTC for 50% higher than MtGox asking price to some people... how could you not immediately tell that they were going to turn around and run with your products?!?

Selling a commodity or a currency for a 50% markup SCREAMS of "too good to be true".

Obviously the buyers knew what bitcoins were and knew their real value, otherwise they wouldn't be buying them through eBay.

Get a brain!
102  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you really believe Satoshi is real?? on: July 04, 2011, 02:08:13 AM
Satoshi is a smart person or group of persons that knew bitcoin would cause a shit storm yet appreciates their private life. End of discussion.
103  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Should there be Three Laws of Bitcoin? on: July 03, 2011, 11:21:31 AM
Quote
The first rule of Bitcoin is: You don't change the protocol
The second rule of Bitcoin is: You don't change the protocol
The third rule is: If you are new to Bitcoin, you have to think of ways the protocol should be changed...

Which is why I suspect there will probably be a bitcoin2 one day with a migration path to transfer bitcoin1's into it.  Bitcoin is really in beta still.  It's a very neat design with a number of checks and balances built into it but it's really only starting to be tested properly in the last couple of months.  Both the code and rules of the system need to withstand a lot of external factors that it won't face until the economy gets bigger and many which may never be predicted before they happen.  This will inevitably highlight weaknesses in the design that can be rectified by tweaking it.  You can't realistically keep tweaking the current bitcoin, it will undermine confidence if the rules keep changing.  So the best solution is to eventually come up with a bitcoin2 standard and migrate.  Leave the existing bitcoin in place and people can migrate as they see fit.  Market forces will determine whether btc 1 or 2 will prevail and then the loser will die out completely.  As it becomes clear that bitcoin2 is going to become the standard bitcoin1 value will start to drop and motivate people to migrate.

I find it very suspicious that all BTC addresses currently start with a 1. That makes me think that there will be a "2".
104  Economy / Speculation / Re: How I know that the Bitcoin boat has sailed on: July 03, 2011, 11:01:00 AM
Yes, another thread about the falling Bitcoin price.

I know the ship has sailed because I have finally put money into Bitcoins and every investment that I finally get around to making is at the end of its hayday.

Back in 2001 I finally bought some dotcom stock so that I could get in on the millions that everyone else had been making for the past few years...I had followed it closely from early on and finally bit the bullet and jumped in. That is when the dotcom bubble burst. I lost all of my investment.

I did see the gold thing skyrocketing back in 2005 so I knew that it would go up. So I dropped $20,000 in when it was $400 per ounce. Then my company, SAIC announced that they were going to IPO in a year and that they were offering employees share purchases up to $20,000. So I waited while gold JUMPED to $425 and sold sold sold...and put all of that money into SAIC's IPO at $42 per share which eventually split and dropped and I eventually got my money out at $18 per share.

Then came housing...I bought a house in 2007 at the height of the housing bubble. Fortunately I bought my house in Texas which was not as expensive as other places, needless to say, I lost money when I sold it 2 years later. I sold that house and bought a house in Florida...needless to say, the Florida market is not doing all that great right now.

I found out about BitCoins about a year ago and tried to get the mining to work on my computer but after it rebooted once it started coming up with errors so I gave up on trying to mine, back when a Bitcoin was worth less than a dollar.

I have always planned on getting some Bitcoins but just never got around to it...until this past week. I finally got money transferred through my Dwolla to MtGox and bought at $16.00 per BitCoin.

Expect BitCoin to now crumble like all of my other investments.

I have also been looking into land in Costa Rica...

So basically you think you are a huge loser... and because you found out about Bitcoin then it is doomed to fail basically?

Don't worry so much! Just because you bought at $16 USD and it's at 15.50 right now doesn't mean anything. The market is volatile. Either you are in it for 5 minutes or you are in it for life.

The USD dropped considerably in value just in the last few days, that is probably reflected on MtGox's charts.

Stay strong, carry on.
105  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: PAYPAL SCAM ALERT, scammer is John Binns and paypal. on: July 03, 2011, 10:58:02 AM
I hear you man.

I would suggest you do not sell through ebay/paypal because of that possibility.

It is WAY too easy for me to log into my paypal account through TOR... pay you... and claim I was hacked. Simple as that.

Just don't do it, and you will be fine from now on!
106  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Your prediction: Bitcoin Price In One Week From Today $15 (Weekend) on: July 03, 2011, 10:54:47 AM
I guess $18.43, bob.
107  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: IDEA: Every Bit Helps - Bitcoin charity fundraising website on: July 03, 2011, 10:42:47 AM
This is just an idea, so thoughts welcome. It could be similar to the justgiving.com website (where people get donations, usually in return for doing a difficult challenge, towards a set target). All money would go directly to the charity/ies of their choice. Using BlockExplorer and a static payment address this would be easy to set up. I think it would help improve the perception of Bitcoin as a useful currency in the eyes of the public. Thoughts?

Charity is always a good way to introduce a new product to the public.

Get a site up, get some ideas flowing, and come back to show us!
108  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Huge Television Ad for Bitcoin on All the Major Networks on: July 03, 2011, 10:40:12 AM
sadly i didn't read all the pages of comments Tongue we may be better off getting the people that make southpark to have bitcoins in an episode, they would probably bash it, but as they say 'their is no such thing as bad publicity'. though we still need better 'stuff' before we can really sell bitcoin to the masses.

Look up "south park" and "space cash".

It's pretty good.
109  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How old are you? Survey. on: July 03, 2011, 10:39:20 AM
im 30, but I'm not sure if I'm 28-30, or 30-34 :-) I guess I prefer to feel younger Wink

Lol ye srsly wtf?!
110  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Codename: EasyCoin on: July 03, 2011, 10:00:16 AM
Best of luck with the easycoin project. Hope it's as good as the talk show  Wink

Lol. All sarcasm aside...

Are you fucking kidding me Atlas?

Your idea is to create a central database for bitcoin worth to back against?

And you have over 1,500 posts?

Do you have any idea what the "core values" of bitcoin are or are you just talking out of your ass? You do have about 10+ posts per day so maybe it is the latter.

Just because he has 1,700 posts people... doesn't mean you should listen to him. He does not speak for the majority of the community, on this issue at least, trust me on that one.

1) Define "average person"?

2) My funds cannot easily be stolen. Eventually Bitcoin banks will become more prevalent and used than they are today, but until then computer illiterate people should stay away.

3) I could buy bitcoins when I found out about them back in march, and I can still buy them today. It's actually much, much easier today than it was 3 months ago, and I expect the same in another 3 months. Just because it's not as easy as swiping your credit card to buy bitcoins... doesn't mean we are in a crunch of a crisis or suffering from some kind of problem.

The "credit industry" took hundreds/thousands of years to mature to it's current state. Give Bitcoin another few months and I bet we will have made some great strides.

111  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Stock Exchange Security Standards on: July 03, 2011, 09:49:37 AM
Great ideas. Keep them coming!
112  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: A Better Security Implementation Technique Than Encryption? on: July 03, 2011, 09:48:28 AM
Then why do we not simply force the use of the windows security center into all windows builds of bitcoin by default (or enforce the windows security center to be running unless the user is "advanced" and clicks otherwise)...

The windows security center for those are are not aware is a notification nag system on windows that constantly nags the user to download the latest virus scanner, make sure their firewall is up, to enable the virus scanner and all updates, etc...

If every "basic" windows user was forced to do this by default, I think we could cut down on 90% of the possible thefts by trojan at least - all without much work on our part.
My sense is that most users who are compromised by malware and viruses are actually running the Windows security center. However, I'm not strongly opposed to the idea of the client warning users if their system seems insecure. (Though this could clearly get ridiculous. I don't see any point in having a huge table of specific issues we check for. Oh, you don't have this patch. Your version of this DLL is too old. And so on.)

It wouldn't be too ridiculous to ensure that they have any of the top 10 used virus scanners in place (you could update that list every month or so to stay current) and are updated to the latest version of windows updates.

If they choose to disregard the warning, who cares? At least they were warned... that way nobody can make another huge case about "Wah, wah, wah my $1M+ bitcoins were stolen right from under my nose while I was on the computer... WHA HAPPENED?!"
113  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Vouchers - QR Code Create AND Scan Mobile - Android/iOS/OpenSrc - MtGox Live on: July 03, 2011, 03:25:15 AM
Incredible work!

But I have one question...

What is stopping me from "modding" this qr code creation and immediately storing (and redeeming) my codes as soon as I "gift" them to another merchant?

Seems like it would be a pretty easy thing to do, no?

Say "here is 0.1 btc for that coffee, thanks!"

And then immediately redeem the copied code I sent them, essentially stealing the coffee?
114  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Lawsuit over bank's responsibility for credential theft. Customer lost. on: July 03, 2011, 02:48:14 AM
Nice find! Too bad it happend just BEFORE allinvain lost his 500k and all of our bad press broke.

Had it of happened just after, it might have quelled the barbarians at the gates.
115  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How hard would it be to pitch a bitcoin investment on "Shark Tank"/"Dragons Den" on: July 03, 2011, 02:40:13 AM
What we need is a TED presentation.

Totally taking it off topic but I agree!

Ok back to our regularly scheduled program people... what do you think about a possible Shark Tank / Dragon's Den sales pitch of some sort?

I was just thinking... both the Shark Tank and Dragon's Den are both relatively unpopular shows.

They have viewers, but a very select type.

They might enjoy the exchange of viewerships so to speak...

They could introduce a few thousand people to Bitcoin, and our community could introduce a few thousand to theirs. Unless every bitcoiner on here already watches one of the shows that is.
116  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How hard would it be to pitch a bitcoin investment on "Shark Tank"/"Dragons Den" on: July 03, 2011, 02:37:41 AM
I think Kevin (from Shark Tank) would totally go for it! He seems like a 'where's the money' type of guy who doesn't care how 'weird' or 'different' things are as long as he can make money on it. He'd be on I'd bet. And, even if the sharks didn't invest, I bet just being on the show would get a bunch of new people here. From what I've seen with the Dragons, though, I'm not so sure they'd invest. They seem like a freaking tough group.

Rage

You are right. Some of them are all about the numbers, some of them like to "go with their gut" and only invest in business' that they know and understand.

The only problem I can foresee is that it would differ from a typical show.

Nobody has ever gone on either show (so far as I know) and asked them to invest in Coca Cola or Barrels of Oil. Typically every show I have seen consists of a small (usually less qualified) entrepreneur that has a great idea but no funding for their product.

Which might mean we would have to go the ASIC route.
117  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How hard would it be to pitch a bitcoin investment on "Shark Tank"/"Dragons Den" on: July 03, 2011, 02:28:59 AM
I figure we send in Gavin and Bruce...

Both wearing suits...

Lots of chairts, graphs, financial know how, numbers, etc...

It should be an easy sell to get the sharks to invest $1,000,000 or more dollars into Bitcoins. (If they have not already, that is!)

Or possibly even into an ASIC mining project?

A huge initial investment by the sharks followed by all of their loyal followers investing would be a great kick-starter for the Bitcoin success path.

Thoughts?

Are we there yet?

119  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bye Bitcoin! on: July 03, 2011, 02:20:36 AM
My feeling is that its getting close to gut check time....
pulled my chips off the table, on the sidelines.

Pretty much every single one of NO_SLAVE's posts read like this as well guys.

He is a professional FUD scare troll. Don't listen.
120  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Metal Engraved Keypair Cards! Coming soon! on: July 03, 2011, 12:46:00 AM
Is the "engraving" already rubbing off a bit on the cards?

See the left side of the card in your picture... looks like it's fading or something already? (And it's brand new I can only assume).
