101  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Ethereum: Welcome to the Beginning on: January 03, 2016, 09:14:53 AM
Is there any news about the new etherminer which can handle big DAG file size. The DAG file is over 1280MB now.

It's always good to remember that you should always have one forever kept safe, at least 1. But if you want to be sure to become a "local whale" so to speak, get yourself 21 BTC and save them, then spend anything above those 21 BTC knowing you will always have this 21 BTC saved no matter what. This is my goal and i've seen a lot of other people are trying to achieve this too. I hope I can do it before it's too late.

I also have a plan to accumulate as many as I can and join the 1 million club, no more 1 million in the world can have more bitcoin than I.

Your activity should not have much of an effect on other users, however I would not recommend updating the initial information through wifi, you will be there forever.  I think you would be safe for now, for there are not to many people looking to hack public wifi bitcoin access, just my opinion though.

Thanks for the warning. I'm considering using a dead mobile as offline storage. Dead as in without a network connection of course. Smiley
That is a good idea.  It will hold battery life for a long while and you can connect through wifi when ever you want to use your account.  That is a great idea and I think it trumps my laptop that I keep off the network until I need it.  Not to many people would expect a cell phone that is out of service.

But with cell phone, you can only use online wallet. Is that safe?

I also disagree with the fact that Bitcoin could be worth 11 Million dollars.  There is no government that is going to allow this to become the worldly currency.  Mainly because these governments want control over everything.  Look at North Korea.  You ever think they will accept this as a global currency?  It is because of these reasons that Bitcoin will never reach $11M value.  Unless you are calculating the crash of the USA which would make the dollar completly worthless and the paper it is printed on would be worth about $11M in exchange for one BTC.

For North Korea, bitcoin is good for it to go through international capital control. The North Korea government will use it, but not its people.
105  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What does a node do? on: January 02, 2016, 08:39:15 AM

If it is such a simple configuration, why are there so fewer nodes in the network? I remember there are only 6000 full nodes.

6001 now Smiley

I guess people don't want to pay the overhead in running a full node, when they don't get any reward. I only start the core for a while when I want to check for coins reeceived, and to keep the blockchain up to date.
There's currently 5667 reachable nodes*, it has decreased drastically. Unless you're a developers or want extra security, a SPV node would often suffice. The main problem of Bitcoin Core is disk space and bandwidth, that's pretty much all why Bitcoin users do not want to run it. Why run Core when you can run SPV clients right?

*Only nodes that enabled port 8333 and allowed connection from bitnodes.

Is it possible to DDos those 5667 nodes and take down bitcoin network? 5667 nodes is no a large number.
Maybe. Bitcoin Core only allows a maximum of 125 connections to it. It has DoS protection built in so any node that is sending bad messages to it will get blocked and the connection will be dropped, so it may be hard to do.

But if the node receives a lot of request, how does it know which connection to drop, or which one is from attacker?
106  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How 1BTC can eventually be worth $11M on: January 01, 2016, 08:31:39 PM
if opec negotiated yuan, ruble, or btc for their oil, the usd would be worthless overnight.  never going to happen. f16 and etc guarantees that.

If Bitcoin is developed constantly, the community can reach amicable decisions, then bitcoin will worth more than $11m.

Yeah I would definitely use a light wallet like electrum.  You don't have to bother with all the syncing.

Here's a link to the electrum wallet download.
https://electrum.org/#download

-Aglacan

This is agreed. Remember that Bitcoin Core-QT has to sync blocks and every single transaction that are present in the ledger.
Multibit HD and Electrum are the way to go if you don't wish to wait to conduct transaction.
But Bitcoin Core-QT is the original "Satoshi" wallet if you want to keep that in mind, I recommend using it 100% if you have hard drive space and time to wait for the sync.

We need a lot of core clients running so that the wallet service is not centralised. If all of us use online wallet, the network is centralised.
110  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What does a node do? on: December 31, 2015, 11:38:20 AM
A node is an online bitcoin core client. It downloads and uploads the blockchain to the other nodes. (like a torrent client would do)

It's esentially 1 unit of the network. Every miner is a node, but not every node is a miner.

If it is such a simple configuration, why are there so fewer nodes in the network? I remember there are only 6000 full nodes.

Online wallet is not secure for large amount of bitcoins. I would save most coins in my local wallet.

Seems to be momentum behind 2-4-8 + Segwit + LN.  Probably best to avoid muddying the waters further with more proposals.  Time to get this resolved so we can focus development on more interesting areas.

The conflict of opinions about the block size increase has broken the community. It has to be decided as soon as possible.
113  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How 1BTC can eventually be worth $11M on: December 29, 2015, 09:11:32 PM
I really doubt that.  Fiat currencies are backed by a government guaranteeing its worth.  No government would be crazy enough to do that to bitcoin.

But in reality, the governments tries to devalue the fiat currencies whenever they can. That will reduce the debt they owe.

There will be more and more bitcoin poker players instead of fiat players. There is nothing wrong with poker.

Thanks for the suggestion, but if Amazon needs credit card details, it would seem to defeat the basic philosophy of Bitcoin.

If you just save the block chain with AWS, they will not know the bitcoin account linked to the blockchain.

What don't we know about the Chinese economy?
What are things which the general public doesn't know about the Chinese economy?

A lot.

Did you now they have a-shares (for western instituions), but the same stocks are also traded (cheaper) as b-shares.
http://www.investopedia.com/terms/b/b-shares.asp

It is really interesting to know how to build this construction to profit from western capital
The A-share is for domestic investors. The B-share is for foreign investors. B-share is cheaper.

B-share and A-share merged many years ago. There is no more b-share.

What is the main difference between a full node miner and a SPV miner? If the verification uses little CPU power, so little time, why does not the SPV miner verify the block?
118  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2015-12-18] Is BIP 202 The Bitcoin Block Size Solution Everyone Can Agree On? on: December 20, 2015, 11:34:12 AM
"BIP 202 – Small Block Size Increments, Starting at 2 MB". We need to agree 2MB block size as soon as possible. It is life or death for bitcoin.
119  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2015-12-17] Bitcoin Price Soars after next-level Chinese Capital Controls on: December 18, 2015, 01:31:42 PM
"Bitcoin seems to have begun its life as an American ideal, with virtually 100% of it’s mining and ownership residing in North America. "
Is that true? We do not know who the Satoshi Nagamoto is. Is he confirmed as American? Some people claim his English is British.

What is the difference between this idea and the Openbarrza? I thought Openbarrza will come online early next year.
