102  Other / Meta / Re: Forum ranks/positions (What do those shiny coins under my name mean?) on: April 11, 2014, 10:18:49 PM
I suspect that there is something fundementally flawed in the activity calculation since new people can rise rapidly to hero status and people who have been here almost a year are stuck with Sr. status. Huh

There's something fundamentally flawed in your understanding of it. You can only get a max activity of 14 per two week period, so newer members will only rise faster if they've posted in all those those periods and you haven't.

so then, no account newer than 68 weeks should have 5 coins? Tongue

EDIT: looking at the membersip list i see where i was confused. now my question is, "Where have all the Heroes gone?"

103  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The government could tax bitcoin by mining it. on: April 11, 2014, 09:17:39 PM
Gee, the Gov. could do this, and the Gov. could do that. the US is a country of laws and laws specify what the Gov. can and can't do. One thing the Gov. can't do is operate as a business or compete with a private enterprise.

The things that people who don't know what they are talking about say, geesh.  Roll Eyes

What is the chance of having a 3-month pool luck at 97.29% when btcguild is the 2nd/3rd largest pool?
It must be pretty low I guess, right?

Eligius, a little under BTCG, is at 95% for 90 days.  Someone is having good luck, and it doesn't seem to be any of the big pools.

M

Size has nothing to do with Luck. If someone is having bad Luck, it does not imply that someone else is having good Luck. Luck does not balance out, it just averages out over time. Luck is just that, Luck.

New release: 4.2.3, 3rd April 2014

- Solo miners can now add their own signature of up to 32 characters to the coinbase with the --btc-sig option.

Great! Thanks.

It appears that spaces aren't allowed.  Are there any other characters that aren't allowed, that you may know of?
Spaces are allowed, you just have to quote the signature.

Good info.  Thanks

The --btc-sig was missed in the readme altogether.
Sounds like it is time for me to set up a solo miner. I'm totally about getting my name all over the internet.

Is bitcoin an investment or is a currency ?

There is no reason for these two things to be mutually exclusive. People invest in currencys every day. Shocked
108  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [850 TH] Slush's Pool (mining.bitcoin.cz); TX FEES + VarDiff on: April 03, 2014, 05:35:38 PM
hello I'm new to bitcoin and I'm having an issue on the bitcoincz or slush's pool. I've been mining on my Samsung galaxy fame but nothing is being reflected on my account. it is saying 0 shares but I've been mining for two days according to my mining app I should have at least four shares already. please can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong!

Mining on a PC does not produce enough hash power to be correctly be displayed. you are being lost in variance and rounding error. Don't wear out your PC for nothing.

I suspect that the current problems or changes has thrown off the estimated hashrates. or, somebody threw a 25% hashrate gain my way.  Shocked

Speed estimates should be taken with a grain of salt after any kind of outage.  It can cause....weird things to show up.

I figured as much, thought i would mention it so others wouldn't panic.

Who is this major 'Unknown' taking this massive chunk of BTC?!

http://bitcoincharts.com/bitcoin/

Really? If anyone knew who it was, would it be unknown? Actually, it isn't one, but many. It is a grouping of all unidentified miners.
113  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Career - Bitcoin Miner on: March 30, 2014, 08:59:31 PM
To the contrary. Now that I can label my mining hardware in the guest room " ASIC Mining Solutions " or some other nonsense and use that room and all the facilities and all the hardware as a write off....I'm going to. Coincidentally, I'll also be operating at a loss which will then in turn allow me even greater tax write offs. Also thinking about writing off my pool fees as "union dues". Because of the IRS I can now claim that I have a second job.

FYI the IRS will decide you are no longer a business if your loss gets too high... meaning those deductions stop.

The IRS says you have to make a profit 3 out of 5 years to be a business. Take a loss for the first 2 the go out of business.

116  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Solo mining on: March 29, 2014, 07:16:57 PM
If you have powerful rig

you can try solo mining

If not, mining with pool is more efficient

Unless your rig is so small that it gets lost in the pool's rounding error. then the solo/lottery ticket is the way to go. you have nothing to lose.

Automatic Payout Batch #32804 failed to send yesterday.  The payout has been removed from the payment history for any users included in that batch and it will resend shortly.

MS also mining bitcoin ?

Doubtful.  The IP may be an Azure server that has an extremely good connection to the network + blockchain.info, meaning they are the first source of some blocks that blockchain.info sees.  The relay IP blockchain.info shows is not the SOURCE of a block, its the first node that informed them about a block.

Or maybe some MS peon's BTC wallet.
120  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Will miners in USA be able to remain competitive due to huge tax burden? on: March 27, 2014, 08:58:42 PM
If your expenses exceed your income it is generally considered a hobby. As for the price at the time you mine being your income, I think that would only be true if BTCs were money. If i dig gold out of the ground and put it on a shelf is there a tax liability? Probably not until you transfer it, or as i think of it, moneify(moneyfy? make it money, determine it's true value) it. If i mine bitcoins they aren't, in my opinion, taxable until i either spend them or sell them for fiat. At that time they are taxable at the current 15% capital gains rate. Of course, the expense of acquiring them is deductible then.

I suspect that this will only really affect the big guys, the little home miners shouldn't have an issue. And, in my opinion, the big guys deserve headaches the way they run the difficulty up.
