1001  Other / Politics & Society / Re: a society question about vegans on: October 20, 2021, 08:48:31 PM
What's worse is that some folks think it's not just ok but part of their vegan mission to force their pets to be vegan...

Hate to tell ya this folks but cats, dogs, most lizards, many birds, et al are either carnivores or at best, omnivores that prefer meat but do also occasionally eat plants when needed. They simply will not get the nutrients they need from only plants and will often practically starve themselves if not fed what they are born to eat or at least something resembling it.
1002  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What's the main point of mining bitcoin if value goes up? on: October 20, 2021, 05:01:59 PM
The main point of mining BTC is what it has always been: To confirm transactions. Something cannot have (verifiable) value if there is no way for 2 or more parties to confirm the exchange of what they are trading/buying/selling...

It just so happens that because BTC is not a centralized service (or coin) ran by a company that has their own data processing centers like the credit card companies and banks do, all transactions instead run through and are stored on a public blockchain and the equipment used to verify the tx's is owned by miners.

How does one encourage others to spend $$$ to process the data? Pay them rewards for the work done that are worth more (in fiat) than what it costs the miners to purchase and operate their equipment. Things don't get much simpler than that...
1003  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience NewPac / Terminus R606 (BM1387) Official Support Thread on: October 20, 2021, 02:55:04 PM
Only trick is that you will need the 'paperclip trick' to turn on the PSU. If you look at the large mobo plug you will see a green wire in it, use a piece of wire or bare metal paperclip to join the green to one of the black wires next to it to turn on the power.
1004  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Does anyone have any news on Innosilicon? Their website has been down for days. on: October 20, 2021, 01:34:46 AM
Well, Inno's main business site is back up https://www.innosilicon.com/ but nothing regarding miners anymore...

Their main business has always been custom ASIC design services. They got into mining chips in 2013 when they did the design for the 28nm A1 chips for the now long defunct Bitmine.ch. Once they saw how wildly profitable making miner chips is -- they also designed the chips used in Dragonmints - and the rest of the hardware is when they launched their own line of miners.

Wonder if they've now gotten out of the mining chip business to focus on their core business once again?

and oddly also says that the container ships are coming in with an average of a lot less containers on them.
My guess is that the shipping companies are running smaller loads so the ships can be offloaded faster so they can move on to other ports. Other news items from that site reference that many shippers have had to cancel routes because of the delays...
1006  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: My avalonminer a921 is not HASHING .. HELP? on: October 19, 2021, 05:08:37 PM
Both the controller and miner (mm) firmware are here https://download.canaan-creative.com/avalon921/ Just use the latest for both. Of course, until the AUC and miner are actually seen by the controller you cannot update the mm firmware...

Ja power should be ok using an 1,800w PSU but is not 'quite enough' as I've measured mine to pull just over 2.2kw running full speed in a hot area. In a rush to be the 1st to market with a 10nm chip miner Canaan and the foundry they used (Samsung) rather blew it on the power/speed specs. The 921's are actually slightly less efficient than the venerable A841 is which used 16nm chips.

re the AUC not being seen, try a different USB cable. Many are charge-only cables that have no data lines so look for one labled 'charger + sync' or something like that.
1007  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 2021, time for a new general & diff speculation thread... on: October 19, 2021, 03:57:46 PM
I know this might sound like a conspiracy, but has anyone thought that the mining companies and the rig manufacturers are actively colluding to keep the difficulty as low as possible? Such a scenario might suit all parties if the status quo is maintained, cartels are nothing new!
Of course they are colluding - Bitmain and other miner mfgrs also own several large mining pools... As to them actively working to keep diff low - doubtful but if they are, works for me!
1008  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Jamie Dimon asks, “How do we know Bitcoin supply ends in 21 million”? on: October 19, 2021, 01:49:07 PM
Who the fuck is Jamie Dimon? Never heard of him. Even if I had, I make my own decisions and they are not based on what some random public figure(?) has to say Cheesy
That said we should not care the least what he says.
1009  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Does anyone have any news on Innosilicon? Their website has been down for days. on: October 19, 2021, 01:37:33 PM
Hopefully they just went offline until they resolve the problem of them shipping miners that are locked. That said, a better way would be to have the site up with a notice and no sales from it.
1010  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining btc from a usb stick? on: October 19, 2021, 12:42:02 PM
Grin Grin You will make 0$ so if you wish to waste money go ahead with these usb sticks Roll Eyes
No, they will probably make no money. Then again these are aka "Lottery Sticks" because there IS a chance you might get a block from a solo pool. In that case -- cha ching!! If you sometimes buy a lottery ticket then ya might as well go for a stick to try your Luck because at least they are dirt cheap to run.
1011  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Ebang Ebit Asic Miners Quality. on: October 19, 2021, 11:52:59 AM
Just look through the Support area to find the issues people have had with Ebang miners. There is good reason very few people use them: They have horrible quality, even below Bitmain's S17's - and those are pretty bad with over 25% failure rates...
Customer service is non-existent.
1012  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: True Random for automatic offline address generator on: October 19, 2021, 01:00:08 AM
My only input is that a FM radio receiver does not produce any audio signal if there is no rf signal. They work by finding a rf signal, locking onto it then responding to the frequency deviations of the signal to create an audio signal. You'll have the baseline thermal noise from semiconductors but that's it.

On the other hand, an AM receiver will pickup and amplify anything including natural radio emissions along with a plethora of man-made signals and would be the best choice to use.

Indeed, totally agree there.

FM seams to be unsuitable for the purpose, I'm currently looking into MW/SW/LW, the more promising to be MW and SW, LW never been quite used so the band is pretty much left to static. The issue is; I don't know any module as the FM module referred to work with those frequencies, but I'm thinking on using a stepper to tune around an analogical MW/SW receiver circuit.
Do a search using "software defined radio modules" One good link that pops is https://blog.bliley.com/10-popular-software-defined-radios-sdr
#7 in that lineup looks good...
1013  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: My avalonminer a921 is not HASHING .. HELP? on: October 19, 2021, 12:45:13 AM
For a start, do you have a big enough PSU powering it? The 921's will pull from 1,800 up to about 2,100w. Available settings can be found here A little further down on that page see https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5085231.msg48793403#msg48793403

A screen shot of the cgminer status page would be of great help to let us see if the miner and AUC are even seen by the controller.

When you downloaded the OpenWrT controller firmware did you also get the matching miner mm firmware? The 2 must be the same (latest) versions.

re: Nicehash, NH requires the miner to support the stratum call #xnsub to allow it to seamlessly switch the miner to different coins or work orders. Problem is that #xnsub is a security risk as it allows the miner to run any subroutine a pool sends it. Because of that risk Avalons do not support #xnsub.

And if he had died from the Flu would you then say that flu shots are ineffective? Guess what - NO vaccine is 100% effective but most certainly do improve your odds.

Again, RIP Colin Powell, Apr. 5, 1937-Oct. 18, 2021

re: tvbcof's bile, ^^
And the fact that Iraq had been invading its neighbors and killing their citizens should have been ignored? Just how long do you think you would have lived in that country if you were spouting off like you enjoy doing? Ans: Not very long at all, you'd be among the 1st lined up against a wall shot and then hung from hooks.

Ja it turned out that Saddam was bear-baiting the US and rest of the world regarding bio-weapons but nonetheless something had to be done about him. I take it you would rather have let Saddam run rampant like the murderous lunatic he was?  At least Qaddafi learned his lesson and took Libya away from the road to destruction he had been leading it down.
1016  Other / Politics & Society / Re: RIP Colin Powell on: October 18, 2021, 06:57:26 PM
So much for this thread being a respectful obituary for someone who was a very fine soldier...
I for one salute his memory

Instead the anti-vaxers have once again taken a sad occurrence and are using it to promote their views. Shame on you!
1017  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Is Bitcoin an independent property? on: October 18, 2021, 06:43:11 PM
If I had some bitcoins before I got married, and used bitcoins to buy houses, cars, etc.
When the price of Bitcoin went up, I sold Bitcoin. Is this my money my own? Or is it shared by husband and wife?
When I get divorced, do I split up my bitcoins?
One has to just love how ignorant or at best, naive many folks are...
This is a legal question. Do they honestly think that all countries have the same laws and financial regulations/definitions? Hint: They do not. In the US, what is considered common property in marriage/divorce even varies from state-to-state.

As the OP's questions stands, the only answer that can be given is what other posters have said: It depends on where you live. If you want an accurate answer, at least let us know what country you are asking about...  Roll Eyes
1018  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: List of court cases, complaints, regulatory actions, etc. on: October 18, 2021, 06:37:33 PM

Italy's national secret police / intelligence agency offers an overview of Bitcoin. They highlight the ways in which Bitcoin defeats or circumvents the methods of control that regulators enjoy through the banking system.
And hopefully also reiterated the plethora of ways criminals get around 'controls' the banking systems are supposed to have. They know damn well that there is far more money laundering done using fiat than crypto and things will remain that way for many many years to come.
1019  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Let's Say Bitcoin is scam on: October 18, 2021, 06:31:19 PM
No let's NOT say it is a scam.
Fact is that BTC is NOT a scam and is becoming more and more widely accepted even by governments as a legitimate and legal thing. Scams are not regulated as they are illegal. Only legitimate financial things are regulated (and taxed).

Facts be facts, all discussion of this topic should have ended many many years ago...  Roll Eyes
1020  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S17+ 70/73 some basic questions. on: October 18, 2021, 06:24:31 PM
NEVER use 2 different circuits to power the 2-inlet PSU's!
In theory if you lose 1 line the miner should simply shut down but I would not bet on that happening before the PSU is damaged...
