1001  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon IRC Channel on: March 24, 2013, 02:14:00 AM
why would there ever be an invite only channel?

So the talk is strictly about Avalons and technical support, not useless banter?
1002  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: hardware valuations on: March 24, 2013, 02:03:40 AM
Avalon should be on the top being that it is shipping.   I am interested in seeing people's estimates.

Responded.  Thank You
1004  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Hey BitSyncom, I'm about to visit China. Can I come by on: March 23, 2013, 08:46:57 PM
I think it has been made clear that pickup is not an option due to being fair for all customers.  If that policy has changed, I would like to know as well.

LOL you believe that BS?

There is noway to be fair regarding this. Look at how many Chinese customers got them first.

Whats the point? shipping is always varies. If you pay for the cost to travel there, you should receive them first

A Chinese customer is closer so logic would tell us they would get them before places outside of the country.   Common sense.

Why should I not believe that?   Should I instead just assume nobody tells the truth.  So far they have kept their promises and set expectation within a reasonable range.   With that attitude you are likely to make less allies, not more.

What you said about travel expense, is a policy option.  It seems their principle is more about fairness in competition and securing the network while making a profitable venture.

Thoughts?

1010  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: What is the price of Batch 3? on: March 22, 2013, 08:49:12 PM

Each new dollar (from thin air) ASIC shaves a little more value off the ultimate pool of currency ASICs already in circulation. The value grows but the quality profitability of each dollar ASIC does not.

+1,000,000 - this is true and I said this last summer.   It is a arms race where only the deeper pockets will get in until we reach equilibrium in difficulty.
1011  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: What is the price of Batch 3? on: March 22, 2013, 08:45:38 PM
IMO, If the hardware costs Avalon $800 to build the ASICS. Then they should charge a markup on top of that for their time and R&D. But stating that ROI is the reason of their price shady to me... We do not know if the Fed will step in within the time of buying an ASIC and your earnings to recoup the cost of the ASIC. And if Bitcoins become unusable due to ISPs blocking bitcoin traffic then you have a very expensive paperweight. Keep in the the word ASIC means Application Specific Integrated Circuit. So its only good for one thing and thats mining bitcoins.... IMO thats a BIG risk to take without knowing the legality and the future of Bitcoin.

As stated i think they should charge the cost to build the ASIC system and then a percentage on top to cover their R&D. But as stated they are the ONLY company on the market and this is a free market so they can do what they want... i am sure alot will still order, but they are really hurting future orders as most do not have that much BTC in the first place. AND alot of exchanges will not sell you that many BTC in one shot.

I think you're saying: You need to weigh the risks of this inherently risky en-devour and if you can not handle the risk, do not get involved in mining with current ASIC technology.

Look long-term.  What you should really hope is that miners that make insane profits, keep reinvesting to secure the network.  I will do it as long as I can.

The security of the network also relies on strength in numbers / number of distributed nodes.
With a select few nodes doing all the work it's easier to target them for DDOS, theft, government confiscation, or even drone strike.  Wink

Some might laugh, but all they need to do is label you a terrorist, Bernard von NotHaus, the creator of the Liberty Dollar was labeled as a domestic terrorist by the FBI, and arrested, $7m gold/silver backing his money seized.  Shocked

“Attempts to undermine the legitimate currency of this country are simply a unique form of domestic terrorism,” U.S. Attorney Tompkins said in announcing the verdict. “While these forms of anti-government activities do not involve violence, they are every bit as insidious and represent a clear and present danger to the economic stability of this country,” she added. “We are determined to meet these threats through infiltration, disruption, and dismantling of organizations which seek to challenge the legitimacy of our democratic form of government.”

This is different it is global and decentralized already.  We are in the phase where much capital is needed to increase performance and efficiency.  If you don't see that, do some more research on ASIC and Integrated Chips and how it works.   If you take all the profit out of the network before these become really power efficient then you are actually slowing down the securing of the network.   No one can tell me that a unit that pays off ROI in under 1 year is bad for Bitcoin.   If you want in, Pool up your coins and get a unit.  I am doing it for a bunch of people.  Problem solved.
1013  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: What is the price of Batch 3? on: March 22, 2013, 05:26:57 PM
FWIW, I paid 114 BTC for a batch 1 unit, and 75 BTC for batch 2.

you paid $1,299 + 120 for batch one and $1500 for batch 2.  You sold your coins for that value at the time of the sale.

Those were the terms. Applying bitcoin value retroactively doesn't apply.

Oh, but it does. The whole purpose of buying Avalon unit is to generate bitcoins. So, we should think and calculate ROI for this project in BTC, not USD terms. It does not matter if the manufacturer price is expressed in BTC or USD.

I invested 114btc back in October and if it arrives tomorrow, I can expect it to produce 4.42btc per day (post diff adjustment), consuming about 0.06btc of electricity per day. That gives me a 26 days to break even on my initial high-risk investment, after waiting for 6 months for the delivery. That is, 26 days if difficulty stays the same. But it won't stay the same, it will skyrocket down the road. Given the uncertainty of initial investment, I do not think that the rates of return for 1st batch Avalon pre-orders are unreasonable.

2nd batch Avalon dropped the price considerably in btc terms, and it was absolutely the BEST deal in terms of ROI. No wonder the demand was crazy.

With the 3rd batch, Avalon is still cheaper than the 1st batch customers paid, with much more certainty about the outcome.

Batch 2 had crazy demand for one MAIN reason.  The first two Batch 1 deliveries, PROVED Avalon ASIC was legit.  Only at that point, did the light-bulb come on collectively.   The day of the Batch #2 pre-sale was a animal-house, like Black Friday with the $100 60-inch LCD TV at Walmart Smiley

1014  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: The latest Avalon announcement in China(Translated). Batch #3, price and more. on: March 22, 2013, 05:23:33 PM
Well, I thought I would jump into Avalon Batch three... but my jaw hit the floor when I saw the price. What the bloody hell?

Going all in on BFL seems like a better idea than this shit. $5k for a box that cost initally $1299. Someone decided they don't want customers.

It all turned into greed. Once someone gets their tip wet with a little money it changes them into someone else. I read previously that the Avalon creator did this project to protect the Bitcoin network/community, but seeing a %400 increase in price for a unit that really only cost $1500 or so is not protecting the Bitcoin network/community but just being flat out greedy. It is very easy to see that.

Wow man, guess it must just be greed.  It couldn't be anything else like:

Research & Development Capital
Reward Profit
Principles
Market Pricing
Exchange Risk Hedging

If you are going to think so simple, then you will just get simple answers.
1015  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: What is the price of Batch 3? on: March 22, 2013, 05:16:53 PM
thats bullshit ... and unreasonable...
Supply and demand! They're the only shipping ASIC, and they're selling like hotcakes. They can do whatever they want with the price, and people will still buy them.

Supply and demand is fine. Claiming the price is based on ROI is just bullshit though. When was the last time you bought a car and the seller asked if you would be using it as a taxi?

There are tons of special use vehicles that command a premium because fewer units are made (limited supply).   Try looking up a Black Lincoln Towncar 2005 or newer compared to any other color of the same year (except white).

1016  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Why Avalon's "greed" is good on: March 22, 2013, 02:34:53 PM
It amazes me that we created a new currency to wrestle away the printing press from an elite few and you all hunger to go back to the same situation.  Huh  Avalon does claim to do it's work to support the Bitcoin network (they didn't want BFL to be a monopoly supplier), I just point out the hypocrisy of their actions.

Avalon has done a wonderful thing so far.   I knew the price would be higher, we just didn't know BFL would really not be shipping by now, honestly.    I don't hunger to go back to elite few but you need to look at the capital required for the next generations of ASIC, who is going to fund it??  Answer:  US

Look long-term.  What you should really hope is that miners that make insane profits, keep reinvesting to secure the network.  I will do it as long as I can.

1017  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: What is the price of Batch 3? on: March 22, 2013, 02:29:36 PM
thats bullshit ... and unreasonable...

It isn't if you look at the current state of the market.  They have pricing power and the ROI at the Batch #2 price is insane and Batch #1 is the golden goose.

MAJOR UPDATE IN OP (Original Post).
1020  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] BTC Pooling and Avalon Unit Managment Service - Get in on Batch #3 on: March 22, 2013, 01:19:36 PM
Any chance of lowering the minimum commitment from BTC22?

Maybe unit 3 could be for bitcoin paupers?  Smiley

Not at this time.  I don't want to spread myself too thin by having to service too many people.  This may change in the future, I want to make sure this project gets up and running smoothly before I make bigger commitments.
