1001  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can offline wallets ever be hacked? on: January 03, 2023, 01:04:12 PM
Until now a warning message from bitcoin forum was "Don't keep Your Money in Online Accounts/wallets" but it's sad to hear that a bitcoin developer's account was hacked and $3.6M(200BTC) assets were hacked from his online and offline wallets.  has been  So the only question we all have is how a hacker can hack or gain access to his offline wallet security password.

Bitcoin core developer Luke Dashjr lost Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) his offine and Online Accounts/ wallets and lost more than 200BTC.

Now my question is how a big bitcoin developer like him lost access to his offline wallet.  So what are the risks of using offline wallets?

@LukeDashjr tweet: https://twitter.com/LukeDashjr/status/1609613748364509184?s=19
CryptoGlobe

As others pointed out, something that is indeed offline cannot be hacked.
If ofc there are any keys / passphrases of that "offline" wallet still on a computer that has access to the internet, yes it can be remotely accessed and possibly be hacked.

The best way to create a cold/offline wallet is via either by hand (risky regarding making a mistake on syntax etc) or a computer that is not (an nerver will be) connected to the internet.
If you use a printer, the printer should ideally be destroyed afterwards and not have an WLAN or similar connectivity.

Awesome! He is outside playing with his cousins - I will have him send you a dm after dinner.

Do we have a junior Bitcoiner in the making here?
Congrats to The_Crypto_Kid!

@DaveF: Looking forward to more raffle-action like this. For these tiny amounts a lightning-payment option could also be a nice thing to have.
1003  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Is there good wallet decentralized app ? on: January 03, 2023, 10:50:49 AM
I am suprised to see Bisq exchange was only briefly mentioned before.

It's a dektop app available for most systems: https://bisq.network/downloads/
You can choose between a lot of payment methods including direct bank-cashout. It's a decentralized open-source exchange-system for p2p sales.
Mostly works for smaller amounts between 0.01 and 0.1 BTC (I think up to 0.25 if you find a buyer). Yes, liquidity is kinda low, but if you are okay to wait a few hours you can usually get a trade 1 - 3% above the current rate through.

For more info check out this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5430964.msg61532073#msg61532073
1004  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: We have been told: Invest only Extra money in bitcoin on: January 03, 2023, 10:40:13 AM
We have been told many times to invest only funds which you can afford to lose in bitcoins. But the question is that most of us do not have that extra funds to invest. So, what we do is we buy bitcoins from our savings, and from whatever money we get, we try to buy bitcoins. Middle class people do not have that EXTRA money WHICH THEY CAN"T AFFORD TO LOSE.

Yes, i invest in bitcoins but it is not EXTRA money and I am afraid I can't afford to lose. Do you have that EXTRA money that you can afford to lose  Huh

The topic on how much money to put into Bitcoin or other more risky cryptos is a complex one. It really depends a lot on your financial and general situation in life.
Generally I like the idea of taking a certain percentage of the funds you have available to safe / invest and put these into stable crypto projects, ideally cost-averaging over several months.
"Money you can afford to lose" is also a relative term. If you would have spent the same money on a vacation, some consumer products or partying instead you would have "lost" it, too - so I think there is almost always room for improvement / room to save money and use it for something different instead.
Bitcoin investment seems like a good alternative with the money saved by avoiding your usual spending-habits.
1005  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [GUIDE] How to buy and sell Bitcoin using Bisq on: January 02, 2023, 12:21:45 PM
However, the "issue" of such exchanges as Bisq is that they're generally a little more complicated compared to centralized services and consume quite a lot more time, especially if you're starting from scratch (without any prior balance).
Of course it's quite hard because most of newbies doesn't know privacy is really important and trying to find the easiest way to buy Bitcoin. They will confused when Bisq is need Bitcoin as the security deposit, how can they have Bitcoin if it's the first time they want to buy Bitcoin? some might think Bisq is a ponzi scheme since it's need Bitcoin lol.

I just hope if Bisq can change or improve this step, also they need a marketing team to promote their project to get more traffic.

Many great, truely decentralized projects (the Particl marketplace comes to mind or privacy wallet solutions for Bitcoin) are suffering from this problem:
- fantastic tech / code / project but
- low or even no marketing and public attention at all

Often this comes from the idea that the project doesn't follow the typical monetary incentives and therefore marketing is frowned upon.
However privacy solution, DEXes etc. need a certain amount of users (usually the more the better) to actually work as intended. So yes, I also hope Bisq will get more attention and adds a tiny marketing team for their project.
1006  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [Megathread] Bitcoin Layer 1 Privacy - concepts, ideas, research, discussion on: January 01, 2023, 06:33:44 PM
I come back to this topic every once in a while for reference.
Maybe you @n0nce want to add some examples for working CoinJoin implementations (wallets or similar concepts ) to the OP for advanced accessibility for anyone stumbling accross this thread? Also DEX solutions such as Bisq wallet could be added to OP. Just a thought.

So, to sum up my point, unless there is greater awareness of how important fungibility and privacy are for "sound money", I believe it's still a LONG way to get any of the possible solutions implemented for Bitcoin.
Me too, even though the lightning network (that is designed to work on a large scale) comes incidentally with strong privacy. So, hard fork or not, bitcoin is going to get more private over time, and even if most users don't care about privacy, they do care about the instant confirmation. So, there may be a resistance.
Yes, LN is a step in the right direction and over time I hope to see more "tiny" improvements that add up to create more privacy for Bitcoin.

Happy New Privacy Year 2023.
1007  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where is your bitcoin balance at the end of the year? on: January 01, 2023, 06:22:50 PM
That was kind of a random number, however, if we expect the next big one or two bullmarkets, these 170 usd could well turn into 5 - 10k.
The main reason I picked a low value like 0.01 - if stored on one address it would be likely to see more addresses with higher balances associated to it. Even thought it might be baseless it could be assumed that this person owns a lot more than what is seen on this one address.
Especially among the thugs there are lots of irrational actors and thus, even though objectively it's a low balance compared to other things that are much more easily accessible, might catch their attention.

So it was a random number then haha, if so, what should be the maximum amount before it becomes "risky" to reveal? And that was my point, 170 could be 5k, 10k (again, arbitrary), 10 could also be 10k or more in some very far future.

Trust me, there are people out there hunting for targets sure, but they're on the lookout for risky behaviour rather than scanning for arbitrary numbers.

It's not the amount, it's how easy a victim you might be, how low hanging a fruit you are.
"low hanging fruit" - That's a valid point for sure. I just think if you post your Bitcoin-wealth on a public forum that automatically puts you closer into the category "low hanging fruit" - it's just a very strange (possibly) attention-seeking behaviour that could be exploited.
So yeah, if you make a post about 0.005 or even 0.03 BTC in your wallet, sure that doesn't sound like much (because it isn't) but as soon as you reach higher numbers 0.1+ I'd say this is very attractive for scammers - much easier to scam for a digital asset like Bitcoin from someone publicly writing about it, than any other assets / items of value or "traditional money".

So what I am saying is, 0.01 is not a purely random number - better safe than sorry. Simply avoid talking about your "crypto wealth" if possible - starting from a very amount.

1010  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will Bitcoin Die or Pump Up in 2023? on: January 01, 2023, 12:49:30 PM
According to Elon Musk, the price of Bitcoin will increase by the end of winter.  And we should not lose hope.  We have to harden our minds.  And everyone needs to hold on to Bitcoin tightly so that it doesn't get traded away from the market.  Whoever has the amount of BTC deposited, rest assured.  And wait, something good will come inshallah.  Inshallah BTC price will increase by mid 2023.  And I believe in Elon Musk's words, so you should continue to believe.  The price will definitely increase.
https://imgur.com/a/XFaaPeI

Elon Musks prediction probably has a 1 or 2% higher validity than your local hair-stylist's opinion.
Staying in Bitcoin or crypto because some overhyped-polarizing-dude like Elon said it's good kind of misses the point of a decentralized, autonomous, borderless cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin by 100%.

That being said, we are currently in a bear market, created by a couple of huge and even more tiny factors. How long it will last nobody can predict.
My personal guess is that there is a good chance to see a massive bull-market after the next halving in 2024: https://www.nicehash.com/countdown/btc-halving-2024-05-10-12-00
Until then lots of things can happen, maybe we see a few medium-sized ups-and downs.
I wouldn't expect much lower Bitcoin prices than right now, but you can never plan for big Black Swan events such as FTX or maybe a USDT-insovency etc or some crazy government sanctions on mining/energy etc.

A good point to keep in mind: Anyone saying they know what's gonna happen is either stupid or a scammer.

Was expecting a lot more exchanges than covered by mainstream media to be bankrupt - but your list looks even worse than I imagined.
Maybe @Ratimov can update OP for 2022 and also add dates / tiny info on each exchange to make for a more complete summary. This is a very interesting topic and could be a great reference thread.
1012  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Crypto (btc) is not for the weak on: January 01, 2023, 12:34:50 PM
It's always easy to make money in crypto during a bull run. The same holds true in reverse, very easy to lose (fiat) money during a recession / bear market.
If you zoom out a little bit and broaden your perspective this ist just normal fluctuation.  Nothing much has changed from previous cycles, except the exposure to larger investment firms has increased significantly. This ofc also reflects in bigger losses during the bear-market right now.

The graphic in OP just reflects a "normal" bear market - but it mixes up two things: normal loss in capital due the loss of value of Bitcoin and other crypto assets  - vs. - bankruptcy of exchanges and crypto projects due to scam and misappropriation of user funds.

1016  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Satoshi among us - for those of you not aware of his (/her) legacy in this forum on: December 31, 2022, 10:19:37 PM
If you you want to understand Satoshi's true intention for Bitcoin and speak like him without ever going through his posts or reading Bitcoin Whitepaper, you need to know few things:
1. You need to know The Bitcoin principles and what problems they seek to solve.
2. Or understand what foundation Bitcoin is built on
3. Then let everthing you develop or problems you solve in crypto space be consistently based on the foundation. And you will understand Satoshi and his intention for Bitcoin.

More great things will begin to happen to you when you build on the Bitcoin foundation, you will begin to accurately say things Satoshi said before even without ever reading about them. And Bitcoin will obey you as you have become its Master .  For example, if I say Bitcoin move to $17,000 as its Master, it will.

Agreed on your 3 points. Someone that comes to mind, who really did a great job of just explaining what the true core of Bitcoin is is/was Andreas Antonopoulos. (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJWCJCWOxBYSi5DhCieLOLQ)
His output has stopped for quite a few months now, but I think most that can be found is still relevant. Interestingly enough Andreas was always doing a good job of not overemphasizing Satoshis role and trying to focus more on what Bitcoin can do now and where it could be headed in the future. A good approach imho.

Generally nice to see that a lot of folks seem to already have had some exposure either to the Whitepaper or Satoshis posts.

1018  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where is your bitcoin balance at the end of the year? on: December 31, 2022, 03:54:16 PM
Anyone with slitghly higher balances than 0.01 should probably restrain themselves from publicly disclosing anything about it.

What stands out to me, looking at these statistics is the fact that 85% of all value stored in Bitcoin is distributed among only 0.5% of addresses / owners.
That's an extreme imbalance of wealth. Nothing new or suprising but I think it's worth pointing out.

Really, anyone who has $170 worth of money shouldn't disclose so? You can tell a person's minimum salary from their country. But yeah I get your point of course, just don't discuss anything of value unless necessary, of course. You don't flash your wealth unless you don't mind being a target. Doesn't apply just to Bitcoin.

It's an imbalance, the distribution, but that's only natural. Worth noting it's the most distributed wealth among crypto of value.

Interestingly enough, when typing a response and seeing your OP in this view, everything seems normal-sized.
