10002  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Wired: MIT's Bitcoin-Inspired 'Enigma' Lets Computers Mine Encrypted Data on: July 02, 2015, 01:27:02 AM
I'm a little confused, what the hell is the thing actually supposed to do? Is it to encrypt data using computing power from other people?

It does sound confusing. From what I understood, it is more of processing encrypted pieces of data at multiple nodes. Would be interesting to watch how this evolves.

Yeah I don't think the story was as spelled out as it could have been, but it was already long, the editors probably said. The other question I would like to know the answer to is... who does the mining, and what incentive do they have to mine?

ENIGMA!!!

10003  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Wired: MIT's Bitcoin-Inspired 'Enigma' Lets Computers Mine Encrypted Data on: July 02, 2015, 12:59:07 AM
http://www.wired.com/2015/06/mits-bitcoin-inspired-enigma-lets-computers-mine-encrypted-data/

The cryptography behind bitcoin solved a paradoxical problem: a currency with no regulator, that nonetheless can’t be counterfeited. Now a similar mix of math and code promises to pull off another seemingly magical feat by allowing anyone to share their data with the cloud and nonetheless keep it entirely private.

On Tuesday, a pair of bitcoin entrepreneurs and the MIT Media Lab revealed a prototype for a system called Enigma, designed to achieve a decades-old goal in data security known as “homomorphic” encryption: A way to encrypt data such that it can be shared with a third party and used in computations without it ever being decrypted. That mathematical trick—which would allow untrusted computers to accurately run computations on sensitive data without putting the data at risk of hacker breaches or surveillance—has only become more urgent in an age when millions of users constantly share their secrets with cloud services ranging from Amazon and Dropbox to Google and Facebook. Now, with bitcoin’s tricks in their arsenal, Enigma’s creators say they can now pull off computations on encrypted data more efficiently than ever.

(article continues and is long)

Sounds a little bit like Storj to me, but there's more than one way to skin an encrypted cat.

Hello Quickseller

Do you make escrow only via money?
I have a deal (need to pay 410 perfectmoney for an script
Waiting reply about this and how is work.

I am actually not offering my escrow services on this thread, I am simply advising others to use safe trading practices when dealing in this sub as there are a large number of scams and scam attempts in the currency exchange section.

Yes, you would know because you sell them accounts to scam others with.

If this post gets deleted I'll know you're a moderator.

To everybody else, there are a lot of free escrow services out there. Just consider that before you pay money for one.

They really should change the name of this section from "Investor-based Games" to "Ponzi Scams and Pyramid Schemes."

How long will it be before one's not able to purchase a Bitcoin-themed cake?

Even though the vast majority of bitcoin users and developers are (the children of) wealthy white people, there's nothing in bitcoin's core tenets that promotes the white race over other races. I think that's where you're confusing your readers. So to answer your question, never.
10007  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: NEM's unfair distribution and failure on: June 26, 2015, 07:09:25 PM
Woo!

NEM getting hate threads.

That means they are doing something right!

Well, if that's your metric...

...enn-ex-tee...

I do also like NXT... The first time I heard about the concept of the Asset Exchange I was blown away.

In theory, you can trade anything for anything, so long as it can be represented in the form of a token, and the token distributor honors their agreement to provide whatever it is that the token represents in exchange for the token.

NEM has a while to go before it catches up to NXT in terms of what it can actually do. But the fact that people are starting to get bent out of shape about it means they are gaining traction. Just like with NXT.
10008  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Free speech just took a major hit here in the US! on: June 26, 2015, 07:03:34 PM
wrong section. crazy user. close.

You win! Bitcoin is NOT free speech! Says guy not here as long as crazy guy.

Bitcoin has more to do with free speech than the Confederate flag.

But you're right, in that it should be your right to be a douchebag if you damn well want to. As far as I know it still is.

You can still wear swastika insignias, goose-step around and do the "Heil Hitler" -- isn't that good enough for you?

10013  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin as a catalyst for Health Care (Worldwide) on: June 09, 2015, 12:40:52 AM
Maybe Bitcoin can help pay for blackmarket doctor, i.e. if you have a shootout in the hood and get wounded, you can't go to regular hospital for treatment since they would call the cops, so you call a blackmarket doctor to treat you and you can pay with Bitcoin.

This way, Bitcoin could help the healthcare in low income hoods for people getting treatment.

Now here's some realistic thinking...

If you exclude the speculators (90% of holders), bitcoin is really only used for fraud, gambling and drugs (this is true -- lets stop pretending its not).

So yes, you could use bitcoin as a way to skirt around the PPO or HMO system where 100 people have to get paid before 1 patient can get a surgery.

However, as we've learned over the past 3 years, there has been ZERO adoption of bitcoin among lower-income populations. Want to know why? Because you have to have shit like a bank account, money, the internet and a computer in order to get bitcoin. That's a lot of 1st world shit that we take for granted as spoiled pussies.

I see it more likely being used by Rush Limbaugh- or Michael Jackson-types to get highly experimental penis enlargement surgeries and/or large quantities of sleepy-time meds.

Bitcoin won't ever be used to help poor people. Let's face it: any time a new way to make or use money is involved, the children of rich, white people swoop in, set up regulations and tip that scale also in their favor. Looking at the pictures of the people who comprise the Bitcoin Foundation says it all.
10014  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Man, this is low on: June 05, 2015, 09:25:00 PM

How about technical advancement for the pursuit of profit? Depends on how you go about it, is it through lies an deception, or are you making money because you can do things other people can't do and using that to further advance the technology. Anyone saying they are in it solely for the technical advancement is lying to themselves.

Not true. Do you know what Einstein's average salary was?

"The reasonable figure that Einstein suggested was the modest sum of $3,000 [about $46,800 in today's dollars]. Flexner upped it to $10,000 and offered Einstein an annual pension of $7,500, which he refused as "too generous," so it was reduced to $6,000. When the Institute hired a mathematician at an annual salary of $15,000, with an annual pension of $8,000, Einstein's compensation was increased to those amounts. "

Obviously you need some money to live, and more money to be comfortable. But the culture of people treating money as an end in itself needs to stop. Major corporations and the filthy rich simply hoard money like it was a stake in a shitcoin, and even though the federal government can't buy ink fast enough to print more money, 99% of it goes directly into the pockets of the 1%.

And what about the people who claim they are bringing about technological advancements but all they really do is flex their superior sales skills or ability to put clients under their mind control? This seems to be what at least 50% of all business in America is comprised of.
10015  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should Gavin resign from developement of Bitcoin? [POLL] on: June 05, 2015, 09:07:17 PM
It goes like this: Satoshi > Gavin > Community

Not like this: Satoshi > Community > Gavin

If you put the community in the middle there will be total chaos with no direction or cure. The community must go with flow chart A.

To go back to your original Star Trek metaphor, if Captain Kirk died - even though Scotty has the keys to the ship - would you really want to promote Scotty to Captain??

10016  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should Gavin resign from developement of Bitcoin? [POLL] on: June 05, 2015, 08:50:11 PM
The bitcoin blockchain is already too large in size to make it feasible for mainstream adoption. This is the truth of the situation, like it or not. I've been monitoring adoption for about a year and a half and we are coming to a standstill in terms of transactions per day (with the exception of the recent selloff which has dramatically increased transactions).

Thus, I would say bitcoin's chances of actually achieving widespread adoption are already very slim.

Increasing the block size by such a large proportion will turn off the remainder of the potential convertible population, and will further solidify the gap between hardcore bitcoin geeks and those who couldn't care less.

By letting the blockchain expand up to 20x faster in size, centralization will no doubt be encouraged as those willing to run full clients/nodes will be discouraged by the amount of constant downloading they need to do. Imagine having to set up a QT wallet for the first time and waiting to download 100 GB just so you can perform a simple transaction... is that really an "improvement" on pre-existing systems?

Not all of us have super fast, 1 GBps internet speeds. Those of us who do have enough money in the first place shouldn't even need to worry about owning decentralized currency because they are obviously already well-off financially. Therein lies the irony of the entire cryptocurrency movement.

Therefore, I vote for Meni's elastic cap idea, even though Gavin seems to be putting up some resistance to it.

Edit: had I known my picture was going to end up on Reddit, I would have combed my beard!!

10018  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: jl777 is Satoshi Nakamoto on: June 05, 2015, 08:18:22 PM
at least you put your name to this statement for posterity. IMO jl777 is the complete package, the first crypto dev with real world finance experience AND communication skills, plus his work ethic is phenomenal, and his ego is in balance with his skill-set, and that's what big money investors expect.

So ExtremeFacials.com, tell me, what contributions has James actually made to the the crypto world that have benefitted anybody except himself and his investors?

We're not interested in re-creating a tax-free Wall Street. We're interested in liberating the concept of money from Wall Street and all its burdensome regulations that hobble the average person from being able to afford to live a decent life.

We don't care if certain devs appeal to big-name investors or not. If they do, it could very well mean the death of the project, since the entire concept of cryptocurrency was necessitated as an escape from the evils of Wall Street and the financial sector/government complex.

We're not trying to go back there, even though the greediest of us are trying to drag the scene back into the stinking quagmire of modern-day finance, for motivations of pure greed (and out of sheer disregard for the credibility of the entire movement).

TL;DR: Fuck people who attempt to appeal to the 1%. They are ruining everything.
