10021  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: New installed Electrum 3.3.8 how verified? on: October 25, 2019, 07:52:24 AM
Thanks everyone can not complete all task  all step similar problem trying selected all file one by one all file error notification.
can not find ".asc"  file installer file.

Each line with installer/binary has the corresponding signature file.

And of course you have to take a look where you save them (or use Save As)

If you have troubles seeing the file extensions, look at tutorials like this one https://www.itsupportguides.com/knowledge-base/windows-7/windows-7-how-to-display-file-extensions/
10022  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to make sure hardware wallet I'm buying hasn't been tinkered with? on: October 25, 2019, 07:47:14 AM
Buy it on official store https://shop.ledger.com/
as I know they accepting bitcoin payment, don't worry about your credit card.

I also recommend the official website. And they accept card, paypal and bitcoin: https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360006658493-Payment-methods

I really don't want to show my legal name and credit card information when buying bitcoin hardware storage online.

Well, if you want it to be sent to your home, you don't have much of a choice. Maybe Post Box, but I don't know how that works in Russia.

I'm thinking maybe I should make an older android phone as an offline storage, but I'm scared it can be vulnerable if it will not receive updates and such. Or maybe something like Raspberry pi?

An option is an USB stick with a live OS. (e.g Tails OS)
On the stick persistent storage you may have to install a newer version of Electrum, for example, and after that always make sure your internet cable is disconnected when you boot from the stick.
You can find tutorials here or on Electrum website how to work with cold storage. Basically you keep your seed on paper (and may have to enter it on every boot); on the normal PC you run a wallet in view-only mode, but you need it to create and broadcast transactions; the Live Os you keep only to sign transactions.
Imho it's cheaper and safer than hardware wallet, but (much) less convenient.

And as long as you have the seed on paper you can break the USB stick, you can erase it, reinstall, update, ... just I'd start with wiping it and reinstall before attempting an update (wipe doesn't need internet, while update probably needs it).

Edit: if you go for Electrum, before using it, please read the posts about making sure you have the legit version.
10023  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: CPU Miners Join ME !! on: October 25, 2019, 07:19:05 AM
pool is not small, payouts are every 15 minutes, Each round is max 8 hours so this means, you will definitely get paid 3 times a DAY !

Its PPS [ Pay per Share ] Not PLNS

Oh, good to know; well done. The UI shows only 3 active miners and no stats on when the last block was found. So people can assume the worse.
I think that'll be a good advertising to show more such info on the page.

Edit: also if it's PPS, people should know from the page!
10024  Other / Meta / Re: Would anyone find it useful if I converted some topics to audio? on: October 25, 2019, 06:12:50 AM
it might be nicer to have them read through rather than having to read them yourself.

First of all, thanks for the offer.

I think that the options greatly differs from person to person.
I read even when I commute - either bitcointalk, either news, either a book - on my phone. I find easier and faster to read myself. This way I can also skip the parts I find irrelevant (for me). So no, another text-to-speech (or whatever form) would not help me.

I even used to ask for the opposite: here and there some projects publish audio files with meetings, what is decided to do next, how the project is going and so on. Most of the time I don't get to listen to them, because I would be interested in some 10% of it and don't afford to listen 30-60 minutes for that. I asked a couple of times for transcripts, then I just gave up.

Nowadays, especially for English, people can have text to speech if they want it, on their phone, on their Windows (I think).. At least I seem to bump over that more than necessary  Smiley

TL;DR; For me it's not an useful feature/effort; thanks though.
10025  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How can you detect a risky transaction before a single confirmation? on: October 25, 2019, 05:55:06 AM
I did.

Thank you. At least you didn't call me "moron"  Smiley

But all it takes is a bit of social engineering to try to get them to contact an engineer to push through a double spend...

I don't think that this is an easy task. It's pretty unlikely to happen.

Or even someone in the inside could try doing something with some of the exchanges hot wallet. While it's unlikely you have to assess each exchange and see how likely that would be to happen and then difficulty is added. Also if you decide to delist an exchange from your service people are going to be greatly peeved that they used to get a confirmation quickly and now have to wait 20 minutes.

OK. Quite unlikely situations, but at least this makes sense.

It's probably worth op doing some field research and buying some stuff from different sites to see how it works. If you sell goods but don't have fast delivery then some services accept an unconfirmed tx and then wait for confirmations before dispatching, similar to what a lot of gambling sites do as stated above.

Yup. OP has got some ideas in this thread and this is one important direction to take.
10026  Other / Meta / Re: fillippone Merit Source Application on: October 24, 2019, 11:36:07 AM
When I am not writing stuff myself, I like to dig the forum for gems: there’s a lot of material here and I usually find good food for thought.

This is one of the things that makes you a good candidate. The other thing is that you are going to be merit source for normal (English) areas and Italian too.
You have my support.
10027  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: (Yes or NO) The 2020s belong to DEXs on: October 24, 2019, 10:26:02 AM
but even you phrase it in a way that makes it seem like their days are numbered ("it will still be there for a good number of years")
What happens when Lightning gets to a point where it can provide even cheaper instant off-chain trades between BTC and numerous high volume coins like LTC and stablecoins? All with no central authority or limits imposed by the exchanges?

That would be one great moment in history. I can't wait for it.
At that point the centralized exchanges will remain only a gateway for fiat, which I guess that DEXes will be unable to address.
10028  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: New installed Electrum 3.3.8 how verified? on: October 24, 2019, 08:08:46 AM
From what I see, I think that you've imported ThomasV signature.

I don't know what you've done next. You should have then downloaded the installer and the signature for the installer (in https://electrum.org/#download at the right side of the installer).
Also you may have to make sure that the signature file ends with .asc, not with .asc.txt
And then decrypt/verify this signature file.
10029  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Earning Bitcoin with cheap camera equipment. on: October 24, 2019, 07:55:42 AM
Is it the camera, or the settings that cause the noise? For example, an incorrect ISO setting can introduce noise. Also, I'm told that the noise can be removed by using Lightbox, although I have never tried this.

I've seen cameras where setting low ISO (100 or less) was basically impossible, so the noise was present whenever there was no perfect sunshine. I so don't remember what camera was that, but if I will remember I'll let you know.

And of course, there may be a "cultural difference" too in what cheap camera means  Smiley
What I mean is that Canon EOS 350D costed 999$ in 2005 and that doesn't make it cheap. I can even tell that my camera from 2005 (Sony DSC-H1) made cleaner pictures than my actual DSC HX-60 ; imho nowadays they sell high number of megapixels instead of better image processors.
10030  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Earning Bitcoin with cheap camera equipment. on: October 24, 2019, 07:34:50 AM
1. The business acumen of the photographer
2. The creativity and knowledge of the photographer

I agree that the commercial exposure the image gets and the creativity are the most important.
However, I'd put the camera onto place #3 because many may prefer unedited photos and a bad camera can add noise into the photo which will make it undesirable.
10031  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: What's worse: cigar addiction or gambling addiction on: October 24, 2019, 07:21:03 AM
I think that both are as bad as each other. Just the way this goes is way different.
Smoking is more bearable on long term and may or may not kill you.
Gambling addiction will most probably lead to financial problems which lead to personal problems, stress, depression and so on, which can (but not necessarily will) also kill you (and it's not only the case of suicide).

The interesting part is the "good things" related to these, the moments that can lead to addiction.
While gambling brings adrenaline, fun and with a little thinking can be done without getting into addiction, smoking gives you nothing at all. Some may say it is good against stress, but there are a ton of alternatives, some may say it's good for social acceptance, but imho if a group accepts you only if you smoke you may be way better without it on long term.
10032  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: New installed Electrum 3.3.8 how verified? on: October 24, 2019, 07:05:02 AM
First of all, this question was answered before a good number of times. You should have been searching for the answer.

Now, the steps are described here: https://bitcoinelectrum.com/how-to-verify-your-electrum-download/
Edit: this may also be of help: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5130429.0
10033  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to lose your Bitcoins with CTRL-C CTRL-V on: October 24, 2019, 06:59:10 AM
Now since this kind of malware is out there (that can change the address copied to clipboard) I wonder if there is a possibility to exist even a malware that change the address "pasted" right before sending the TX (0.1 sec before you click "SEND" button). This would make checking the address worthless and your coins would vanish, so let's hope not.

Although your use case is highly improbable, there's counter measure for that too.
For example if you use Electrum, instead of pressing Send, you can press Preview and check there. Then Sign and Broadcast. If you go on this path there's no place they can change anything, no matter what.
10034  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: 3000+ Cryptocurrency on Coinmarketcap on: October 24, 2019, 06:33:46 AM
Is this a healthy thing for the growth of cryptocurrency network or is it degrading the value of the system as large number of cryptocurrencies are available with zero trading volume and without any product backing.

Altcoins can be a good thing. They can be the training ground for new ideas, they can back interesting projects.
But right now they are out of hand. Too many worthless projects only live to create a bit of hype, get listed, drain some investors' money and die off.
It's not CMC. It's also the discussions and spam(!) associated with them (which they make for increasing awareness).

In certain limits it would have been healthy. But we are way beyond those limits.
Can we do anything to distinguish the completely irrelevant projects and stop them from getting listed at exchanges, from getting discussions around them on forums, reddit, twitter and so on? Not really.  Undecided

TL;DR: it's not healthy, but there's no solution against them either.
10035  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What Zuckerberg & Libra Have to do With The Crypto Market? How Low Will BTC Goes on: October 24, 2019, 04:23:48 AM
I don't really understand the mindset behind this - how can Libra be to blame for bitcoins recent dumps in the market? They are barely alive as is.

The reason is most probably not this, but some may think that the hype around Libra and the proposed regulations (of which some may affect Bitcoin too) may have made investors get out.

Imho the current state is simply speculation and I expect to see pretty soon a trend reversal.
10036  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How can you detect a risky transaction before a single confirmation? on: October 24, 2019, 04:07:45 AM
Somehow everybody missed the part where I was telling about 3rd party custody wallets. Like Xapo, or exchanges...

Good luck double spending from there.
10037  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to lose your Bitcoins with CTRL-C CTRL-V on: October 23, 2019, 06:41:09 PM
I've read an article on this just last year and a lot of discussions have been created about this malware, and still going on right now because there are new investors coming in and newbies do not know the existence of this malware.
The only way to combat this is awareness and education if you are going to invite people to invest, it's part of recruiting that you educate them and inform then about the existence of these kinds of malware, and precautions to take when sending and trading.

That's correct. And in the way I was "convinced" to do a real check on the recipient address, the wallets should do the same. It's not hard to make a window pop up and ask for double check start, middle and end. And the more advanced users can deactivate it.
10038  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How can you detect a risky transaction before a single confirmation? on: October 23, 2019, 06:38:20 PM
and I'm curious how some sites pre-credit users

The only place I've seen such behavior was when the "wallet" was a service owned by a partner company of the receiver.
But in theory if one knows that certain addresses belong to certain services (custodian wallets or maybe exchanges too), he can whitelist them and credit unconfirmed transactions, because those don't double spend transactions, the risk is much lower. Just... how to obtain such a list of addresses?
10039  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-10-23] New Bitcoin ETF Proposal Filed by Gold Fund Veteran on: October 23, 2019, 06:27:26 PM
It's the eternal market policing/ 'manipulation' thing.

This volatility smells of manipulation. But you're right, I guess I linked these two too tight.
I'll correct the other post.

I don't think they'll ever be able to get that nailed enough to satisfy them. That's probably for the best.

Nah. Bitcoin already taught me to never say never. You (and me) don't know what will happen in the future. At some point the exchanges may get more regulated and the levels of manipulation (and maybe volatility too) could decrease greatly.
But yeah.. "maybe", and "could", and "maybe in the future" are not useful now.
10040  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: CPU Miners Join ME !! on: October 23, 2019, 06:18:44 PM
I CPU-mine for Monero now and then and one big problem is the minimum payout threshold the pools have. This can be solved indeed by using another altcoin, so I understand (partly) OP's logic in this. But maybe the user/miner should choose from a list of cheap altcoins for payments.

However, since the pool is too small, the payouts are too rare. I think that OP needs to attract a couple of bigger miners first, to have a hash rate that ensures real chances for at least one block per .. week(?).
What I mean is that no matter how small the miner is, he wants to see now and then that he indeed earned something, no matter how small value. .. and to have some certainty that he won't mine for days after days risking to get absolutely nothing.
