The correct terminology is:
 "98% payout ratio"

Not "98% payout percentage"?  98% is a percentage, not a ratio.  98:100 or 49:50 is the corresponding ratio.

I think casinos usually use the term RTP (return to player), so "98% RTP" would be better.

Pick a number from 1 to 10 and place your bet. The system rolls a 10 sided dice for you automatically.
If your roll is equal to or greater than the number you picked you win.

I pick 1 and bet a million bitcoin.

What do I win if I'm lucky enough that the roll is equal to or greater than 1?

Hint: I think you mean "from 2 to 10".
10104  Economy / Gambling / Re: Don't play SatoshiDice on: October 16, 2012, 05:05:39 AM
Back before I started blogging mostly about Bitcoin, I had a short series on all the "systems" crazy people come to my hometown of Las Vegas with and why none of them really work.

I somehow managed to miss that series, and your entire blog until now.

I subscribed to the RSS feed, and tried to visit the "Everybody’s Got a System: Arbitrage Betting" article that's listed in the RSS feed.  It gave me an error:

FeedBurner could not deliver this feed to you because of the specific problem listed below:
Feed Address: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/CodingInMySleep/~3/LYfTV8GYkcw/

HTTP Error (Code) and Message: (404) null

Then I find the series on your blog, via http://codinginmysleep.com/series/everybodys-got-a-system/ - but it's not listed there either.  That page only shows 2 posts in the series.

[...]if you've got a compulsive streak I would agree with the OP, don't play SatoshiDice or participate in any sort of gambling if you're the type who will lose your house over it.

Another way of putting it:

Don't gamble; but if you're going to gamble, play satoshi dice because at least that way you'll lose more slowly.
10106  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: {ANNOUNCEMENT} WBX Exchange Frozen on: October 16, 2012, 03:35:44 AM

Did anyone here carry out such a search on Andre?

I've been periodically checking the notices of credtors' meetings and he shouldn't have been able to register as a director of Progressive Security if he's bankrupt but I haven't conducted a search of the Personal Insolvency Index.  I also haven't checked whether there are any insolvency proceedings in progress against High Net Worth Property (it seems to have been a shell company so it may not have had any trade creditors).

Patrick has listed Andre's full name and date of birth in this thread, which would help if anyone decides to do an Index search.

I believe he was a director of Progressive Security before WBX ran into trouble.  I remember seeing a weird entry in the WBX server's .htaccess file which redirected some WBX URLs to a Progressive Security site - probably before he got a separate domain registered for Progressive Security.

I assume it would cost money to do the search that ITSA recommended.  I'm guessing that if Andre isn't bankrupt then ITSA would recommend that creditors sue him for the missing assets, though they didn't explicitly say as much.

Does anyone have any kind of legal action in progress against Andre?  I know several have mentioned it in this thread, including Patrick.  Is there anything to report?

I'm still at a loss of how to proceed.  I would happily just split the remaining bitcoins between the creditors proportionally, but apparently that may be legally dangerous for me to do.  I don't want to spend the WBX coins on obtaining legal advice, or before I know it there won't be any left to divide.

Suggestions?  Please?

Also when is this has created and from where is created?

The transaction ID is created when you send your bet.  Before SatoshiDice receive it.  It changes completely if you change any little detail of your bet, like betting an extra 0.00000001 BTC.  You can see the txid before sending the bet if you like, and decide whether or not you want to send that bet.

Also dont give me this nonsense that you wouldnt be surprised if you lost wit ha 91% chance to win.

There's a 9% chance of losing.  That's not so small.
10108  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Satoshi Dice -- Statistical Analysis on: October 15, 2012, 09:17:10 PM
No i dont understand i guess. What i do understand though the odds are astronomical to lose 25 times in row betting the 91%

The odds of losing 25 times in a row betting the lessthan 60000 game are 1 in 700 million billion billion.

I'm willing to bet that it never happened.  Not to you, and not to anyone who played Satoshi Dice.

You made my internal parser crash.  Are you asking how long Satoshi Dice has been running for, and who created it?  Or how the magic numbers are selected?  I can't really tell.

Ok you have a 91% chance to win the lottery. Do you think you are going to win the lottery? I sure as hell wouldnt be sleeping the night before.

If I had a 91% chance of winning a lottery, I would check to see whether the prize made it worth playing or not.  If so, and if I could afford to play, I'd play it and if not I wouldn't.  I don't think lotteries often have a positive expectation for the player since they are usually run for profit and/or to fund the arts / charities / etc.  But if I had entered and had a 91% chance of winning, I would be 91% sure of winning.  I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't win, any more than I'm surprised if I roll a 2 on a 10 sided dice.  It's unlikely, but it happens.  What's your point?
10109  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Satoshi Dice -- Statistical Analysis on: October 15, 2012, 09:08:58 PM
If you think otherwise you are dull. IF those were the actual odds then youd be a millionare just by betting 91% odds.

Sorry, I missed that gem.

If you make a bet that pays out 1.071 times 91% of the time, you lose:

>>> 91.5527 * 1.071
98.0529417

For every $100 you bet, you get back around $98.05.

They also pay out when you lose, so you actually get a little more than that back, but it's still less than $100.

Just because you win 91% of the time doesn't make a bet profitable - it also depends how much you get when you win.
10110  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Satoshi Dice -- Statistical Analysis on: October 15, 2012, 09:04:38 PM
The game is rigged. Its not random. If you think otherwise you are dull. IF those were the actual odds then youd be a millionare just by betting 91% odds. But when you do it loves to throw out numbers such as 60008 when you have less than 60000 #

Read their site.  It contains a solid proof that the game is not rigged.  Whether you win or lose is determined absolutely by the daily secret and your transaction id.  The site has published a hash of their daily secret in advance, so they can't cheat.  You can calculate your magic numbers for yourself to make sure there's no cheating going on.

If you have some specific reason to think they're cheating please go on.  But it sounds to me like you don't understand how the game works.

Anyway, on with the stats:

I won about 100 BTC on satoshidice so far. The house edge doesn't mean you won't win, it's just that out of 100 people, 50% will walk away losers, 48% will walk away winners, and
2% goes to the house. You just hope to be the 48%.

That is exactly why I don't like the expression "98% breakeven odds".  It leads people to believe what you just said.

The 2% house edge doesn't mean that 48% of people will be winners.  It means that in the long term everyone will lose 2% of everything they bet.  ie. there is 0% chance that you will break even if you play long enough.  In the short term, the percentage of people who will be winners depends on what game they're playing.  For example if 100 people play "lessthan 64000" once each then the vast majority of them will be small winners.  And a few will be big losers.  And if the same 100 people play "lessthan 1" once each then it's very likely that all 100 of them will lose their bet.  Whatever the house edge is.

In other words, "98% breakeven odds" is just plain wrong and misleading.

I finally got around to contacting ITSA.  I emailed them, and immediately got back a stock response saying they'll respond within 5 working days.

I'll report back here when I hear from them.

They replied:

I'd just contact ITSA for advice.  There's a toll-free number residents of some countries can use or you could email them if you want stuff in writing.

I'm not convinced that the other directors of HNT aren't just as liable as Andre, but that's only an issue if people are lodging lawsuits.

Thanks.  I'll do that and report back here.

I'm sorry about that! I have updated the original post so that it is more correct.

I was kind of hoping you'd reimburse my loss, but not really expecting you to.  It's cool though.

You've always been incredibly helpful, Dooglus, so I just went in and added 1 BTC to your account.

Thanks.  I just saw something that has helped me to put my loss into perspective...

Looks like the best day so far for satoshidice.  And at first glance it looks as if martingale betting is once again responsible for the loss:

That's a total 'profit' of -1331.317 BTC.  (I didn't check if these are all from the same wallet, but they're all betting the same bet, and are all around the same time so they probably are).

And to think I felt hard done by when I lost 10 BTC on bitZino.com!

Go here: http://src.satoshidice.com/rev2/

And click on the "Leaderboard" tab. You'll see the people who have played the most, and whether they have won or lost, and how much. Many lose, many win. It is gambling after all, and there is a small house edge, so the average player will lose net-net, but some win alot and some lose alot, and that's how gambling works Smiley

Interesting, but I think I'd rather see the leaderboard sorted by net profit, not by amount staked.  Better still, make the column headings clickable so I can sort by whatever field I want to.

I'm sorry about that! I have updated the original post so that it is more correct.

I was kind of hoping you'd reimburse my loss, but not really expecting you to.  It's cool though.
