1021  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Transparent mining 2, or What part of Legacy should be left behind on: February 10, 2014, 05:09:12 PM
Mining reward is another obsolete part. True reward for supporting Nxt network comes from services that use Nxt. Someone owns a currency exchange and mine blocks to keep his business running. Another one owns a shop and mine blocks to keep his business running. The 3rd person owns a software company that develops programs for Nxt-based services and mine blocks to keep his business running. Selfish miners (those who mine only to earn fees) should be "removed" from the system, they r not interested in success of Nxt and only want to cash-out. If a clone appears such the people will likely jump to another ship, they add very little value to Nxt. All this doesn't mean that we should get rid of fees completely, we still need them as a countermeasure against spamming.

I like the idea, but then, I always liked the idea of "something for something".

+1

Like it or not, most people are selfish. These words from BCNext mostly apply to some ideal world, not ours. IMHO.

But BCNext explicitly states that clones will fix that problem, which they will. There will be room for clones that will reward the forgers who just want to forge, because there are people who want to do just that. This is what I like about the evolving world of the cryptos. The clone won't be bad, it will cater to a different niche. I say good luck to them and will mean it.

But, I am trader and merchant enough to see loads of interesting opportunities for people like me, who want to carve out a niche in Nxt, too Smiley

The upshot it also that if Nxt doesn't do this, probably someone else will make a clone who does it. Smiley

Simply describing a strength without directly juxstaposing it to a competitor is a much better tactic. Let people use that as a reason to do a little research and draw their own conclusions.

Or just use the "problem" as a spring board, like so:

Neutral news
"MtGox is having trouble blalalalalalalabla"

Then

Positive news
"In other news, Nxt has just moved forward with the announcement of BCNext's second stage of Nxt. This will allow blablablabla."

People forget neutral and remember positive, also because it's at the end of the article.
People remember negative and it's harder to get them to the positive, while also looking like a plug.

In both cases Nxt comes out tops, but it doesn't look (in fact, it isn't) an attack.

I was thinking of doing this on my blog, but it's not aimed at providing news on BTC, and I don't want to take on that extra work  Tongue

1023  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Transparent mining 2, or What part of Legacy should be left behind on: February 10, 2014, 04:32:10 PM
I can't imagine why somebody who is selling t-shirts or anything else should be forger and nobody else.

I like the idea forging as business. But still don't undestrand why average person buying a 100000 NXT will not be able to forge.

Mining made bitcoin so famous, because people can do something for the idea at home and earn real money.

What I'm missing?

Mining reward is another obsolete part. True reward for supporting Nxt network comes from services that use Nxt. Someone owns a currency exchange and mine blocks to keep his business running. @marek3ball: as far as I see, there is nothing stopping anyone from forging and nothing else. It will just be unprofitable compared to forging and offering services. I could set up my shop and reduce or eliminate the running costs by being able to run my shop by using my forging gains to pay for servers etc. I and many with me would like that.

As BCNext says, there still will be systems (if this gets implemented you can bet on it!) that will let you forge and just do nothing. It's that BCNext's vision for Nxt is that it won't do that. Someone will come along to clone Nxt and attract the "selfish" forgers who want to get rich by basically running a program. That isn't bad in itself, but it could be much better.

There are many people who would be willing to get in on it, so the system will filter out users by itself. Market: pure and simple.

NXTs as coins... NXTs r not coins, at least the creator of Nxt didn't want them to be coins. They r tokens that grant privileges to support Nxt. Deflation is not much better than inflation, "real" coins should be created on top of Nxt and be issued in quantities that keep their value constant. BCNext understands that this is very arguable, the community should decide if it wants to follow the path showed by him or stick to Bitcoin legacy with unchangeable supply of coins in hope to become rich by doing nothing.

Nothing in here says Nxt (tokens) will have no value. Their value lies in the "privileges". That makes them a valued possession. Nxt (tokens) are the basis of the system and as such will be in demand. Anything else just refers to them. Their ultimate value is in the fact that they enable the use of (or more of) the Nxt ecology. I see no problems in their value. As such they would resemble red blood cells that are essential to the operation of the living body, whatever that body does.

My 2 Nxt (or whatever equivalent you prefer)

Actually, one does:

Is nxt vulnerable to the Transaction Malleability problem bitcoin has?

Bitcoin doesn't have Transaction Malleability problem. MtGox does.

Nxt exchanges shouldn't rely on transaction ids though. Coz ids can be changed in a way similar to Bitcoin.

 Wink

In a related note, I dislike marketing that "attacks" the other parties weak points.
It will always come back to you.

I think without a booth or naked ladies it is quite impossible to giveaway stickers during regular business talks with potential contributors
Who needs stickers when u have naked ladies?  Cheesy

Nope, business cards are much more useful in a face-2-face. Swag is always nice, tho,
Pens (Admiral.fus idea, methinks) would be good in an f2f situation.

Business cards are a MUST. Get loads.
I've just ran out here in Frankfurt and it's really bad PR to get a big client and you don't have a card. It shouts "small time trader" and "amateur".  Angry

Shaking hands and talking is the only must. You can have all the marketing gear and a big booth and it doesn't mean anything if you don't go out and meet people, if even to give your card and have a chat.

So basically, if you cannot do more than that at short notice, use what you have, which is people and go there and meet and greet.

Also hoard cards like a magpie. Get a notebook, ask for cards and staple them inside. At the end you will have a valuable book with contacts that you have met and can write to. Make quick notes about the people you met when you have the time, so you can personalise emails if needed.

Keep track of opportunities. If at all possible, mail them in the week after the conference to start a closer relationship.

I've been managing a small booth here now for over four days (and now am down with a cold in my hotel room  Cry ), and have loads of contacts for my company that I will spend contacting all in the next week. Big deals and good contacts are not created on the spot. Don't get discouraged it your talks are brief and people seem uninterested or hurried. They have loads of people to meet besides you. If they give you their card, it's an invitation to call on them, so use it!

Also remember to rest. Get drunk áfter the conference Wink. Conferences and meeting people is hard work!

And lastly, enjoy!

yes, moo are the best... Let's see what bring those Damelon's friends. If they provide beautiful designs, we should definitely jump on moo only Smiley

I still am at the Frankfurter Messe, but have had a call from him.
We will call when I am back in Amsterdam on wednesday and I will ask him for some quick designs.
After that I will meet with his partner and we will work on a complete design that is coordinated in apparel and cards etc. Smiley
1027  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [NXT] Community nominations to the funding comittee on: February 08, 2014, 09:31:00 PM

Please take me off of consideration for tech committee.

As rickyjames pointed out I already control enough budget via NXTcommunityfund.

Also, I have made it clear to aldrin that if he felt that I was not doing a good job then I will step down. Now that pouncer and neer.g have also donated, it would only be fair that if two out of the three main funders want me replaced, I will step down.

I will step down as trustee rather than let another committee manage it. If you dont like me, fine, replace me with somebody else. The NXTcommunityfund needs to be run by a single decision maker who has the freedom to push for projects that would never get out of committee.

James, I was wrong.  I owe not only you an apology, but aldrin, pouncer and neer.g an apology as well.

Reading your post made me realize I had made a mistake lumping the NXT donations you received from your patrons into the same category as unclaimed NXT controlled by CfB.  Pushing for committee control of all of this NXT as I did in my "committee summary" post is totally inappropriate, and I see that now.

CfB, as original owner of the unclaimed NXT, has set the terms for its disbursement.  Those terms were to set up committees to administer it for the good of the NXT community.  It is totally appropriate for the NXT community to vote on who and how many should be on those committees.

Aldrin, pouncer and neer.g, as original owners of their donated NXT, also set the terms for its disbursement.  Those terms were for James /jl777 to use it as he personally saw fit to implement as many as possible of his endless stream of good ideas.  This is effectively a private contract between individuals.  It is totally INappropriate for the NXT community to vote on anything that would interfere with such a private contract and dilute James' intended spending authority under the terms of that private contract.

I made a mistake in initiating such a vote, and I am sorry.

When I make a mistake, I will admit it as soon as I recognize it, and then do everything I can to correct whatever mess I have made.  Accordingly, I have frozen the poll I started and I will go back and edit my posts to delete this proposal I made.  I believe my error here will soon be forgotten outside of this circle.

Inside this circle, I want to say that I think James is a true fountainhead of good ideas and is doing a great job of implementing them, and funding his efforts is one of the best ideas of all.

-rickyjames

I love people who are not afraid to apologise.
Good fortune to you, sir! Smiley

Currently with a few outside developers on payment modules for the main open source ecommerce and CMS systems.
First draft has been sent to wesleyh for review, as I want someone from inside to look it over before we go any further.
Hopefully he has will give some insights if he has time.

Still in initial stages.

CMS/commerce list:

prestashop
oscommerce
magento
Drupal
Wordpress
Joomla

Just a small update.
wesleyh has looked at the proposal and I will be sending his feedback to my guys.
As soon as I am back from my week at the Frankfurter Messe I will be getting more energy into this project.
I want to be able to show something so everyone can look at it (especially the devs) to poke and prod at it, hopefully with one of my devs on a BCT account, too. Feels a bit silly to be in the middle, as may be project leader, but not technically minded, so I'm at best a hindrance in that process. Smiley

I want to thank wes out here, so he gets public credit for being an overall nice guy!

Oooh, that sounds good! Smiley Would love to see Nextcoin payment plugins be released. This could start real use of the coin as currency.

That's exactly the plan.
The idea is to make it simple for people to start implementations of payments in Nxt.

As long as we keep bickering at people for proposing a plan and private funding, we'll get nowhere at all. Why not just ignore what you won't invest in and let him do it?

The risk is his to take.

It's a private proposal, so why not have him give it a go?
Giving it a go Huh It's not like I could force him not to waste $7500 on reinventing the wheel even if I wanted to.

Basically what I'm reacting against the tendency to shoot things down before they even get going.

That's fine for when community Nxt is at stake. It's weird when he wants to spend his own.

Why take pot shots when it's clear you are not going to be involved in it?

Decentralized. That's all you need to know.
If that's supposed to be the main point, it's called FreeNet and it's 14 years old. Just fork it.

Also, this is backed by me... I have 2.6M NXT  Wink

The reason why there are so little NXT transactions are because they are way to expensive. If i want to send the lowest amount possible to a friend, so he can send it back and test his setup, it costs mit 2 NXT total. (send 3 to him, 2 come to him and he sends the 2 back) That are 12-15 cents.

Our network wants to tell everyone that we can handle big traffic with little cost, but the way i see it, with the fee staying that high, not many transactions will occur.

Or look at faucets. Many people want to enter a currency for free at start to test it out. Now we can get 3 NXT from a faucet. that is 1 transaction .... Rly??
I think currencies like Doge are so successful because the fee is ridiculous low, its 0.01 Doge, that is like a 10.000th of NXT..

I predict a more than 10 fold in transactions if the fee drops to 0.1 NXT and the fractional NXTs get enabled.  Also even if it does not increase by tenfold, then then widespread of the currency makes up for it.

FEE 0.1!!!!  NAOWW

Exactly!
When are we implementing this change?

+1

That makes no sense because NXT is 100% issued so fees need to be material to encourage forging and redistribute coins. Perhaps the fee should be 1% of amounts < 100, and capped at 1 for larger amounts. Two decimal places would be needed also, for nxt cents.

Forging makes no sense if you don't have transactions.

Plus most people don't even know what forging is for. Hell, most simpele miners don't even realise that they are securing the network. They just mine for coinzzzz.

Again: who is the target audience?

It's only media in the sense that it's signs broadcast over a medium

Musical farts can be described like that, too.

Whew, from a terribly busy Frankfurter Messe I want to let you people know that my developer has taken up my question for a Nxt payment module a level higher than I anticipated.

Because he basically saw no way to garantuee safety in a simple way he got a friend involved who has a hosting company, and this person is now also interested.

They now have the plan to set up some kind of dedicated server system (tecnical details elude me after a day of building our booth, but I will elaborate when less tired) to facilitate Nxt payments. They are also willing to develop the modules to work with it.

Basically all customer actions are dealt with via their own client, the server basically is meant to report to the shopkeepers if payments have been done and are confirmed.

As I say, I'm too tired at the moment to be totally coherent, but it looks great and I am chuffed that more developers after only a weekend of digging throught the wiki are very interested.

Looks like we will have some kind of payment system that can be easily used up fairly soon (no ETA though, embryo stage).

Just playing devil's advocate here..

I know and that might be part of the reason I go balistic on these kind of post from him especially. It feels like he is the one to decide and critize and others who get sponsored (or not) got to do all the work.

guys, lets all just take a step back for a second and take a deep breath.  it looks like we are well past the point where we start to fragment.  A few weeks ago we were all doing great as a team.  When did it start to change?  I went over to nextcoin to ask about something in the peerexplorer thread and got accused of hiding something for running my network of heavy-hallmarked VPSs.

Not sure what is going wrong here.. LOL is that the real experiment?  Is it really a social experiment BCNext is playing on us?  LOL

It's not uncommon at all Smiley

Apparently were entering a new phase, some new people come in, some developments create tension etc.

This happens in ANY group. It's not a biggie so long as a bit of lightheartedness stays.

Once we all take it very seriously, then there will be problems.

Some things didn't go the way we expected. That is never fun. Apparently they are fixable to some extent and some ideas will need to be changed. Smiley

Let's keep in mind that we are still moving enormously fast for a decentral group. A bit of appreciation for all your own efforts is a good thing.

1039  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: February 05, 2014, 06:14:08 PM
Shouldnt this announcement be in big bold red letters all over the place? How do you expect everyone to upgrade due to a critical bug if you don't make it seem serious and disclose the matter nonchalantly.

The fact Jean-Luc urges everyone to update for a critical issue is enough to do it. Reasons might not be disclosed to avoid malicious exploits in a 0.5.11 vulnerability.

Sorry, but it is not.

If not updating has such large consequences, it needs to be coordinated at least with nxtcrypto so QBTC can put it in the front page.

People who don´t read this thread have no idea they need to update and basically no way of knowing it.

Also: 0.1. No need to go lower at this point.  Smiley
1040  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: February 05, 2014, 03:52:04 PM
One thing is for sure a Turing-Complete Nxt would have much more marketing WOW than 1000 TPS Nxt.

I think everyone can clearly see that fact with Ethereum.

You cannot be serious with this statement.  What percentage of people have even heard the phrase "Turing-Complete"?   What percentage of people hate standing around waiting for that little machine to spit out their Visa slip?

People don;t really care it takes one minute but they care more that their purchasing power doesn't depreciate during the transaction.

If you want to pull off a VISA type setup your gonna have to fix the price of NXT....the US Dollar doesn't fluctuate on moment by moment basis....but NXT does.

This problem applies to both merchants & consumers....it's like buying goods in Euro and selling them in USD....after a certain amount of time your profits might be wiped out by rate fluctuations.

EDIT: Turing-Complete is to take the spot light off Ethereum...we are in the market for crypto-investments, programmers and early adopters....Turing-complete is a competitive threat against Nxt.

You know, thís happens quite a lot: talking about two different things
Please don´t muddle the waters by answering a question about the marketing for mainstream with an argument about marketing for crypto-investers and programmers.

That really doesn´t help.

For mainstream Turing-complete is a useless fact. VISA is better, but the mainstream person, as someone already said, doesn´t know and doesn´t care.
They just want it to work, smoothly and effortlessly and it also must be cool.

The VISA and Turing is for here and the experts. Those are important to get even started. We won´t reach mainstream without first tackling that.
