1021  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum on debian 12 on: October 12, 2023, 12:36:06 AM
I suggest instead of changing your system-wide installation sources, you better manually install Electrum with its own installation tutorial. Go to https://electrum.org/#download, on "Installation from Python sources" go ahead with "Install with PIP:"

Code:
 sudo apt-get install python3-pyqt5 libsecp256k1-dev python3-cryptography python3-setuptools python3-pip
 wget https://download.electrum.org/4.4.6/Electrum-4.4.6.tar.gz
 wget https://download.electrum.org/4.4.6/Electrum-4.4.6.tar.gz.asc
 gpg --verify Electrum-4.4.6.tar.gz.asc
 python3 -m pip install --user Electrum-4.4.6.tar.gz
-snip-

I don't know what's wrong with my system. But I always end up getting this error. See the image below, please.

If I understand correctly, the problem is with Python. I searched with this error message on the internet and I got a few results. One answer is "Your distribution is trying to protect you against mixing apt provided packages and pip provided packages. Mixing two package managers (apt and pip here) is always a bad idea and the source of many issues.

PEP 668 is a way for distributions to explicitly tell users to avoid falling into this pitfall. Your distribution told you three solutions in the message, but only the 2nd one applies cleanly to your use case"

Using apt install python3-xxx. It does not cleanly apply for you as you're having a requirements.txt, not a single dependency. It would work if you have only a few requirements in the file and can do it manually for each, like apt install python3-xxx python3-yyy python3-zzz. In this case there's no weird mixing of package managers: you installed python3 using apt, you're installing your dependencies using apt: no surprises.
Using a venv: python3 -m venv .venv then source .venv/bin/activate, then pip install -r requirements.txt. In this case the installation is contained inside the .venv directory: no mixing of what apt does and what pip does, no surprises.
Using pipx which does not cleanly apply to your case, pipx is good to install and use a program, like pipx install black, but here you need to install libraries listed in a requirement file, not a program.

There's another way, that I often use myself because I often need multiple different Python versions:

Use a Python not provided by your distribution, so it does not mess with apt installed things and does not adopt PEP 668. I often compile many Python interpreters myself using a short bash function which use a --prefix=~/.local/, for testing purposes. With those Pythons I use either a venv either a good old pip install, in this case pip will install it in ~/.local/, again no clash between apt and pip, no bad surprises.

Not sure If I understood anything.

Should I post my entry to make them hunt my best multiplier now LOL.

Now I am wondering what is your hit. Should I post my entry so you and others can start chasing for my multiplier?  Wink
Or should I leave everyone in the middle of the ocean?  Cheesy Cheesy If you are confident with your multiplier, just have a coffee and chill. I will post mine at the last minute even if I see I am in the 6th position Tongue Tongue

Just kidding. I was too busy with my operating system as I wanted to switch to the Linux operating system and I messed up with my Windows. Later I formatted my drives, and then I managed to dual-boot my system. I have a hit in my hand, and I am trying to hit bigger than that.

Have you tried running
Code:
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
respectively?

That should install available upgrades of all packages currently installed on your system, including Electrum.

I tried this right now. I am still in an older version of Electrum.

Code:
 sudo apt-get install python3-pyqt5 libsecp256k1-dev python3-cryptography python3-setuptools python3-pip
 wget https://download.electrum.org/4.4.6/Electrum-4.4.6.tar.gz
 wget https://download.electrum.org/4.4.6/Electrum-4.4.6.tar.gz.asc
 gpg --verify Electrum-4.4.6.tar.gz.asc
 python3 -m pip install --user Electrum-4.4.6.tar.gz

Even though I tried this before, Now I tried it again and ended up with an error:

Code:
error: externally-managed-environment

× This environment is externally managed
╰─> To install Python packages system-wide, try apt install
python3-xyz, where xyz is the package you are trying to
    install.

If you wish to install a non-Debian-packaged Python package,
    create a virtual environment using python3 -m venv path/to/venv.
Then use path/to/venv/bin/python and path/to/venv/bin/pip. Make
    sure you have python3-full installed.

If you wish to install a non-Debian packaged Python application,
it may be easiest to use pipx install xyz, which will manage a
virtual environment for you. Make sure you have pipx installed.

    See /usr/share/doc/python3.11/README.venv for more information.

note: If you believe this is a mistake, please contact your Python installation or OS distribution provider. You can override this, at the risk of breaking your Python installation or OS, by passing --break-system-packages.
hint: See PEP 668 for the detailed specification.

I can run the .Appimage which I downloaded from Electrum.org, but that does not install Electrum on my system. It just runs the software and does not create a desktop icon in the menu.
Have you tried installing Electrum from Python sources?

Yes, I did I got an error. Check the above, please. I got the same error.

As far as I remember, this is not only on Debian; even on Ubuntu software in 2020, the Electrum version listed there is also outdated.

This is interesting. I don't know how to check if the latest version is available on the Debian server or not. But, thanks for the confirmation. Thanks to vv181 as well. The version I am using is Electrum 4.3.4. If there is no security issue in this version, I am okay with it.
1025  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Fuck you ledger on: October 11, 2023, 08:56:39 AM
Many have a bad impression of Ledger since the last changes. But it's not mandatory anyway.
If you're referring to the firmware update that allowed the Recover "option" to work, it doesn't matter if you sign up for it or not; Ledger admitted they can pinch your private keys out of the secure element at any time, which they had previously said wasn't possible (and someone please correct me if I've got any of that wrong, but what I wrote is my understanding of what Ledger did and how it works).

Did they admit that? If so, how can this be seen as a secured wallet? If I am not wrong, Ledger claims, "Here at Ledger we strongly believe in open source. It's one of our core values, a great philosophy that advocates openness, and verifiability. Open source allows developers and security experts to review the code and ensure it is secure and not malicious. Open source means you don't need to trust" [1]

If they are open source, can't developers verify that the Ledger has a chance to steal users' private keys? Did nobody try it? Now, I am curious about it. Do you remember the recent hack of Atomic Wallet, where thousands of users reported that their wallet was hacked and they did not use any phishing? If users did not use phishing, how was their wallet hacked? These wallets are not non-custodial anymore.

If I remember correctly, yes I did. However, I am confused because I have installed Debian 12 a couple of times because I was unable to do a dual boot with Windows 10. This is the final, and I was able to dual-boot Debian 12 with Windows 10. I am currently logged in on my Windows system. I will try the commands once I get back to Linux and I will let you know about it. But, If I remember correctly, this did not help either. My best guess is that the deb.debian.org server does not have an updated version of Electrum yet. I could be wrong. If any Debian users are using an updated version of Electrum, they may confirm what is wrong.
1027  Economy / Economics / Re: If They Can Pay off their Debts, Why Don't They? on: October 11, 2023, 08:05:01 AM
Debt is indeed something that seems difficult, sometimes we feel why there are countries or companies that are still managing debts even though they can be paid off immediately, especially large countries like the ones above, of course it is not difficult to immediately pay off these debts and I think the influencing factor is because the country also needs debt to make financial ratios look normal.

This is not the reason, to be honest. The financial ratio does not matter. Think about your own business so you can understand better. Let's say you have some products in your store worth $5000 now and you can generate $20 profit per day by selling these products. After your sale, you buy again from this sale. Now, you took another $ 5,000 loan that will charge you $500 a year, and you can pay them in installments.

If you have $ 10,000 worth of products in your store, your daily profit will be $40 a day. Now let's calculate: If you generate another $20 profit per day, that will be around $7300 a year and your debt was $5000+ the service charge. I hope you get the match. The rate of interest varies from institution to institution. The profit ratio varies as well.
1028  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Fuck you ledger on: October 11, 2023, 07:10:05 AM
I really concerned from the last changes oof ledger and their narratives about they can get your private key  , in addition to they always update software because of their shitcoins ,I finally  moved my fund from ledger wallet to software  cold wallet and learned how to deal with cold wallet and transfer  transactions  partial signing  online and then signing offline and broadcast it 😏 , and   learned some coin control and going to learn some privacy coinjoin , it work so  great , why they don't tell us about cold wallet from begining instead of wasting our money on a fucking signing device ,really I enjoyed the experiment and fuck you ledger ,🖕,, and I want to thank you Gus because you helped me so match

Nice to know that you have learned many things about cold wallet. But I am unsure if you are talking about Electrum or not. Or how Electrum is related in your post. Because you have created this thread in the Electrum wallet section. Many have a bad impression of Ledger since the last changes. But it's not mandatory anyway. Still, it questions the legitimacy of their honesty and how concerned they are about users' security. I don't know if they think it's a smart move from them or a dumb move from them. I don't know many things about wallets yet. But since I learned about Electrum, I have been using it and I am satisfied with it. I had a plan to buy a hardware wallet but unfortunately, I am unable to buy from my location and they do not deliver to my country as well.
1029  Bitcoin / Electrum / Electrum on debian 12 on: October 11, 2023, 06:59:41 AM
Hi there.

Recently I decided to move to the Linux operating system due to security reasons and I was excited about it. I never used the Linux operating system before so I do not have any experience. I was trying to install Electrum's latest version on my Operating system which is Debian 12. The problem is, that whenever I write a command in my terminal, it always installs a backdated version of Electrum in my system. The command I am using is
Code:
sudo apt install electrum

I should mention one thing. The selected mirror server is deb.debian.org

I also tried to upgrade my package by applying this command
Code:
sudo -H pip3 install --upgrade https://download.electrum.org/4.4.6/Electrum-4.4.6.tar.gz#egg=electrum[fast]

and unfortunately, I get this error:

Code:
error: externally-managed-environment

1031  Economy / Economics / Re: Women are more economical than men. on: October 10, 2023, 02:35:56 PM
A man has to face many situations inside and outside the house, which a woman would never be able to do.
It depends on the responsibility. Have you ever seen a single mom who works hard to raise her kids? I have seen them. If their husband dies or they get divorced, women must take responsibility for their kids. Imagine a woman who has no brothers, but she has her old parents, and she has to take care of them. The only way for her is to work and make money for them. So, women face too many issues, too. It varies from person to person. The responsibility matters here.

A man works hard to support his family, but never depends on a woman.
It's not always right. Sometimes women work for her family and her husband had to rely on her income. I guess you haven't seen situations like this.

1032  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is life on: October 10, 2023, 01:20:18 PM
Of course, OP I agree with you. Bitcoin should not be compared to gambling. I should trade in bitcoin and invest in bitcoin long term this is less risk. and gambling is full of high risk, it doesn't take long for a man to be completely destitute in gambling, and it doesn't take long to become rich. As far as I know most people lose their money in gambling and end up completely destitute. So we should refrain from gambling and invest in Bitcoin for long term.

Mr. Op is barely interested in this topic. He just wanted to firm some merits because his other account got some merits by opening a similar topic and he thought why not create another account and create another thread so I can get some merits? This user is from our local community and can barely write English. If you criticize him, he will ignore you and won't reply.

I am glad he stopped posting in this thread stopped creating useless threads and returned to where he belongs (The Bounty Board). I don't know if this reply will bring him back here. But I don't want to poke him and wake him up to create more threads  Cheesy Cheesy

1034  Economy / Economics / Re: Women are more economical than men. on: October 10, 2023, 12:34:16 PM
We had this argument where I was the opinion that most men spend money on things that they are obligated to and cannot control it at times due to responsibilities, men are used to spending money already and because of being used to it, they can find it hard to be as economical as women can be. Do you agree with this unpopular opinion that women are more economical when it comes to money and are able to manage themselves and their homes better than men do?

Actually, it depends on who makes the money and who spends the money. There are no men and women thing when it comes to spending money. It depends on who earns it. If it's their own hard-earned money, usually, people do not spend their hard-earned money on something that is useless. If the money is from some sugar mommy and from sugar daddy, then people love to spend others' money.

It happens in the family as well. When men earn money, their wives love to spend that money by shopping, eating outside, and doing various activities. At time same time, if the money was earned by her own, she does not want to spend that money on unnessesary things. I hope you got my point.
1035  Economy / Economics / Re: Agriculture vs oil on: October 10, 2023, 12:22:34 PM
Agriculture and oil are correlated because most agriculture right now uses machines like tractors to harvest their crops and even plant and prepare the land so they are using a lot of oil, so if the oil price increases the price also increases.

I guess this is the most reasonable answer that makes sense. I saw a similar post on the first page, BTW. Yes, I want to say that I agree with you. Even though old helps run the machines of tractors and harvesters, those machines are part of agriculture as well. A country can increase its production by using the latest technology. In comparison, a country cannot increase the supply of oil. The oil is a natural product. You cannot force them to produce more and more oil according to the demand. So, whenever the demand increases, the oil price increases as well. It applies to almost everything. But a country can increase the production of food if they want.
1036  Economy / Economics / Re: If They Can Pay off their Debts, Why Don't They? on: October 10, 2023, 08:56:47 AM
We will of course think that the country will easily pay off the debt, but if we enter the government which regulates finances then this is not easy, the state has of course made a daily to annual income and expenditure plan, and the debt is of course already included in that calculation so that if If you want to pay off debt, you have to take another budget, which is certainly not easy.

It's not like how we think. Just think about the stock market. If a company sells all its shares and cash out its money from the market, the market will be manipulated, and there is a chance for a market crash. This is why the government also has some rules in the stock market. When it comes to GDP and paying debt, a government cannot take money from all the profitable sectors to pay the debts. If they do, many projects won't be able to run anymore and will be closed due to insufficient funds. To rerun the project, they have to retake the loan. So, there is no need to rush to pay the debts while they have time to pay them by installment. There might be other reasons as well. But the mentioned one is the most significant.

Looking at the thread benchmark made for AI where the standard is in Sapling or Copyleaks, it seems that this OP is using AI to reply in this thread.

I am on mobile right now. Writing from a mobile device is not comfortable at all. So I am unable to check with these tools and then report them. If you visit the reputation thread, there is a thread to report AI-written posts. Would you mind following the report format and reporting them in that thread? After reporting on that thread, you need to report these posts by clicking on the Report to the moderator and giving the report link as a reference so moderators can check the proof that the user is using AI. The problem for Reddit users is we don't know if they have any reputation or not. I do not understand the reputation system of Reddit. If you regret because you were not able to adopt bitcoin in its early days, we all can also say we regret that we were not able to adopt bitcoin earlier. Some of us have heard about bitcoin a long ago, but I am sure a lot of us did not get interested right after hearing it's name. Most of us hear it a couple of times and we started to know about it more and more.

I don't think it's too late to know about bitcoin. It's still early days considering how many days remained to end the Bitcoin mining. It's need about 140 years to end the mining. Bitcoin price will increase over the time. A lot of people don't know about bitcoin and they will heard about it a lot later than you. So, you should be glad that you already heard about Bitcoin.
