1021  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-03-02] Louisiana Officials Probe Staffers for Bitcoin Mining on: March 02, 2018, 01:15:09 PM
Recently in Russia there was a similar case, but for the production of coins was used a supercomputer in a secret Institute. Now, programmers are accused of treason. The sentence can be up to 20 years in prison.

They are lucky that they are not sentenced to death or sent to swim in the deep ocean with a rock tied in their feet Shocked
20 years seems nothing imo, supercomputer & secret Institute in mother Russia oO
1022  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-03-02] Louisiana Officials Probe Staffers for Bitcoin Mining on: March 02, 2018, 11:11:52 AM
The attorney general of the U.S. state of Louisiana is reportedly investigating a group of former staffers for using official resources to mine cryptocurrencies.

According to a report from the Tribune News Service, officials in Louisiana have yet to publicly comment on the rumored investigation. Yet sources told the publication that the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation began asking questions after discovering "hardware that they believed could have been used in the so-called mining of bitcoin."

"We were worried that the (computer) systems may have been compromised," one source told the news outlet. Some of the employees, whose names were not published, have reportedly denied that they engaged in the energy-intensive mining process, through which new coins are minted.

If confirmed, the investigation would be the latest to emerge in recent years regarding the suspected use of public-office resources to mine cryptocurrencies.

In January 2017, for example, Federal Reserve's Office of the Inspector General fined a former staffer $5,000 after being caught mining bitcoins on a server owned by the U.S. central bank between 2012 and 2014. Later that year, New York's Department of Education sanctioned an employee for mining bitcoins on their work computer between March and April 2014.

Someone could just retire after paying as tiny amount as $5,000 Wink
It seems that people trying to make some profit with free electricity + free hardware but it isn't that easy to hide the noise + the electricity bill from your institution / boss.
The real problem for everyone imo is scripts running in the background which could be hard to detect sometimes.
1023  Other / Meta / Re: Stake your Bitcoin address here on: March 02, 2018, 10:50:47 AM
I'm not sure if there's another thread for this already, or if this belongs in a different section. So basically I thought it would be helpful to post up your Bitcoin address in this thread in the event that your account gets compromised later on down the road. You can simply make a new alt account, sign the address that your original account posted here, and have irrefutable proof that you're the actual owner. It's not 100% guaranteed that you'll get your account back, but it's a pretty good start. Of course, if your account is compromised, the hacker could just come back to this thread and edit/delete whatever address you post here, so that's why I'm asking people to quote the address posted by the preceding user in this thread. Here's mine:

1FLnpvdXL6ooBpFj2LHqZxQsrxn2voj5uv
Here is my btc address: 12VMyj6YumEQcMe1oPaGaMASNHqJMwrnyP

Quoted for future reference and it is even better to stake a message to prove your ownership of the address
1024  Other / Meta / Re: Create a level above Legendary on: March 01, 2018, 08:34:12 PM
As I have said before I think there should be a new rank as Legendary is becoming far too common now, but I think the ranking system should just follow the current activity pattern that we have that doubles with each one and Legendary should become fixed instead of random:

Sr. Member:   Activity: 240
Hero Member:   Activity: 480
Legendary Member: Activity: 960
Mythical/Lamborghini/Whatever Member: Activity: 1920

Some sort of additional 'Sage' rank or title could be considered for achieving a high level of merit as well which maybe comes with an additional perk or two. You could of course also make the Mythical/Lamborghini/Whatever Member rank require some number of merit to achieve as well.

a new level based on Merits would be an awesome idea, it should be solely based on merits earnt and not what we were given. so say 1K merits earnt is the threshold and any member rank gets the new rank when it hits..

maybe call it a merit legend!

I like Sage.

noun
1.
a profoundly wise person; a person famed for wisdom.
2.
someone venerated for the possession of wisdom, judgment, and experience.

Introducing a bugatti veyron rank based on activity (somewhere between 1840-2000?) could be understood but creating a rank based only on merit is a little bit messy.
No one could judge the merit system until most active/generous people run out of smerit (<25%? after excluding sources) which could happens in the next few months-1 year? from now if the chosen ones aren't that many to cover all the section.
Making a calculation based on the first month is biased..
1025  Other / Meta / Re: Legendary one day? on: March 01, 2018, 08:17:45 PM
Thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirty-twoooo months waiting for this moment to become a legendary and join the elderly fictional club Tongue (and btw i didn't pay attention that i leveled up two days ago!)
I could take a breath now Grin
1026  Other / Meta / Re: Merits all over the meta on: March 01, 2018, 07:55:56 PM
The topic starts with a simple (and a repost) question.
Why majority of the post here is about merits??
-snip-
Then people start talking about site traffic loss in case of removing signature campaign and other stuff...
If we really care about improving our forums then this topic should be locked since this question was already discussed several times (no need to give further comments about staying on topic in a repost topic!).
1027  Other / Meta / Re: Create a level above Legendary on: February 28, 2018, 06:33:50 PM
-snip-
Requirements
-   Merit required 2500 total

Are you asking theymos to create a rank for himself, alone?
Another thing, the point of the Merit system is to limit shitposting, if legendary members will compete to have this silly requirement then low rankers could whine moar!
Third, make a list of trusted members and the ones that give the information you need and follow them, legendary doesn't mean that he isn't a scammer nor a trustworthy person... A low rank guy could help the community by far comparing to half of the high ranked members...

Although it is a federal judge who ordered it but as an old coinbase user, i take the decision to leave the boat before it shrinks months ago. Having a full control of your cryptocurrencies is a must, you cannot walk in the street while another unknown person having the keys of your house! Then it comes the debatable taxes, then i am afraid to see PayshitPal restrictions add to coinbase and dozens of accounts closed...
Keep your identities and your private keys for yourselves people.

1030  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Overview of Bitcointalk Signature-Ad Campaigns [Last update: 15-Feb-2018] on: February 27, 2018, 03:59:57 PM
Yahoo is managing Alax.io signature campaign. The rates are different for those who have have merits so I'm not sure how you're supposed to add it.

Put the minimum rates in the table (in this case those without any additional merit points) then add an orange asterisk after the name of the campaign like FortuneJack for example.
1031  Economy / Speculation / Re: Samsung Galaxy S9 will be able to clear the Crypto currency. on: February 26, 2018, 02:25:03 PM
BS.
Mining with a normal computer doesn't pay - you will pay probably more for electricity than what you get out of it.

Now mining with a mobile phone (destroying your battery in the process) is even much worse.

It pays off. I mine Monero with this comps CPU over night when i sleep. Dont say stupidity.

But mining with mobile wil just empty the battery and gain almost nothing in meanwhile.

It depends actually from the cost of the electricity in your region/country and how much hash rate you could generate and of course which coin you choose to mine.
The major parameters is the electricity cost tho Wink
1032  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-02-26] Uzbekistan to Legalize Bitcoin and Support Developers on: February 26, 2018, 02:18:15 PM
From looking at it as a scam to supporting it, this looks promising and another important point is this
Quote
Uzbekistan has another important advantage that could potentially increase the country’s prominence in the crypto world. It placed third in a recent study of cryptocurrency mining expenses. Mining 1 bitcoin there costs just $1,790. Uzbekistan is actually the largest producer of electricity in the region.
So if ever China will drop Bitcoin mining, we can find easily another close place to mine tho Wink meanwhile, it is too early to judge tho.
1033  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-02-26]COINDESK - After Facebook, Will Global Ad Regulators Reject ICOs? on: February 26, 2018, 02:11:55 PM
-snip-
Case in point, last year, a crypto ad made the rounds on Facebook with a stolen logo from the New Zealand Herald newspaper and an image of the former New Zealand prime minister John Key with a fake quote claiming he invested in bitcoin.

And in Australia, the continent's securities watchdog received more than 1,200 crypto scam complaints, with one complaint detailing how an exchange advertised that it was an existing Australian company to gain consumer's trust...

Now this is a joke, stealing the pic of the prime manager and claiming he invested in crypto...
Someone trying to join an ICO should always stay vigilant and look carefully at the project and examine it in details or else chances being scammed are high.
Some projects just try to attract users without any real road map and at the end 100% failure...
1034  Other / Meta / Re: Adding paid changename on: February 25, 2018, 05:52:04 PM
It would be a nice feature maybe, but is there really any reason to implement it? I haven't seen anyone run into any problems because they had an issue with their user names. It's a cosmetic feature at best, so maybe it remains in the pipeline because there is no urgency to implement this feature in a way which would serve a lot of people.

Lots of users have requested name changes in the past and for a myriad of reasons. Some just chose their name in haste when they signed up and would prefer something different and some people don't want their name tied to their identify elsewhere. Some people decide to start businesses or sell products and would like their name to reflect that. There have been other genuine reasons to change names but can't quite recall them right now. If you do a bit of searching in Meta you'll likely find a few.

Agree.
I just want to add that having the old name of the user mentioned somewhere in the profile is a must tho to avoid confusion.
+ only 1 name change is allowed after approval by global mods or admins.
1035  Other / Meta / Re: Forum ranks/positions/badges (What do those shiny coins under my name mean?) on: February 25, 2018, 01:16:22 PM
Thank for help me out , so that you must get 30 post to become JR member

Correct.
But try to make useful posts in order to collect some merit so you can have access to the other ranks and don't get stuck as junior member forever.
1036  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Boycott Coinmarketcap - allowing ponzi to advertise on: February 24, 2018, 07:04:36 PM
We shouldn't recommend coinmarketcap.com to anyone. They are still advertising ponzis on their site. They should know better! No respect for us or newbies at all. Right now I find this garbage site in banner at top: -snip-

Well getting money for free will make them reviewing less the content which isn't obvious sometimes / hard to say whether it is a scam or not sometimes.
Google ads offers a reporting function so it is a little bit "better".
I check it from time to time since I don't know (searched precisely) similar sites (until the previous post maybe)
1037  Other / Meta / Re: Merit Bug , or what ? on: February 24, 2018, 06:56:16 PM
hello everyone , i just found this user https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1169572 , he is newbie but have 105 merit

but after i saw on his merit he just recived 5 merit , its visual bug or what ? i and my friend can see him with 105 merit

prove that he have 105 merit : https://prnt.sc/ij6zep
prove that he just recived 5 merit : https://prnt.sc/ij71bi

Full member = 100 merit + he earned few more (dig and you may find more interesting things maybe).
Well this "old full member" just deleted his posts but approximately he kept at least 1 post per period which could allow him to return as a full member soon.
Red flags...
1038  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: February 24, 2018, 05:16:49 PM
now it is impossible for me to move forward in the ranking after the introduction of merits.  Cry Cry
Indeed! If you keep making posts like this one. That's the idea of the new system
I think it's going to be really hard to get your profile to a higher rank with this new merit system
I hope that there will be more upgrades and modifications.

A member having barely all his posts in ICO related topics (or in local sections) will get rarely merit and this is the point of the system.
Make useful posts = get a reward, simple Wink
1039  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Overview of Bitcointalk Signature-Ad Campaigns [Last update: 15-Feb-2018] on: February 24, 2018, 03:52:50 PM
I think there is a mistake on the Fortunejack Signature campaign pay rate. As per listed on the table it is 0.02 per week while it should have at least 2 trust to get the rate. Base payment for usual member without trust is 0.01btc/week so I think it should be 0.01 on the table instead of 0.02btc.
True, just checked their topic and they will pay according to your merit (+ a bonus payment).
Since the asterisk is for the least amount of money then it should be 0.01btc

-snip-
Users with 0 - 2 Trust will receive 0.01BTC in weekly payments. Accordingly:

* 3 - 5 Trust > 0.02BTC
* 6 - 8 Trust > 0.03BTC
* 8 - 10 Trust > 0.035BTC
* 11 - 29 Trust > 0.04BTC
* 30 - 49 Trust > 0.05BTC
* 50 + Trust > 0.06 BTC

Additionally: The 4th-week bonus payment will vary proportionately to users member status on Bitcointalk:

* Senior users will receive - 0.015 BTC
* Hero users will Receive - 0.02 BTC
* Legendary users will get - 0.025 BTC

It's realy hard to understand where to get merits still confused here  Huh  Huh

It's really hard to understand how you couldn't understand a concept explained million times over and over...and over!
Read the first post, take a look on the infographics...still didn't understand? Just make useful posts and people will give you merit points as a reward.....................

It's hard to understand where to get merits. I'm not after with the merits though. Maybe doing efforts to help people make money here in bitcointalk could consider be a merit

It is hard to understand how can someone read the first post and don't understand after that how to get merit.
A simple answer : make useful and good quality posts.
More info https://m.imgur.com/a/jWrTB, you could get more informations from the infographics in the OP.
