That's a hefty list but may be useful. You know, the problem with ignoring a huge amount of people is that you may miss actually something *useful* and end up repeating it yourself in an attempt to provide constructive input somewhere. This thread should probably be in Off-Topic and self moderated (spam will likely come your way).

10264  Economy / Marketplace / Beware of Malware: Think Before Acting! on: October 18, 2016, 04:17:46 AM
[1] Malicious software — or “malware” for short — is a broad class of software built with malicious intent. Over the course of the last few years, malware infection attempts on this forum has become increasingly sophisticated. Below is a summary of infection techniques that I have encountered. With the most sophisticated attacks, common sense and virus scans sometimes are not sufficient to ensure safety.

"latest wallet"/"custom wallet"/"faster miner"
A newbie asks for the latest wallet, or wallet that doesn't have any TX fees, or the latest/fastest miner, and the attacker posts a program with malware embedded as a response. This type of attempt usually gets spotted pretty quickly.

Copied/new ANN
The attacker creates a new ANN topic and posts a malware link as the download file (or a legit one and changes it to a malware one later).

Replacing links in quotes
The attacker quotes a legitimate post containing a download link written by the real developer (usually the OP or a update post) and changes the link within the quote to a malware link.

Compromised dev account
The developer account (usually responsible for making the OP) is compromised and a "mandatory update" is posted. This usually happens with old/abandoned coins so the real developer isn't there to notice the rogue update.

Packed/FUD executables
In most of the cases above, the malware has little to no detections on virustotal. This is because any script kiddie can pay $30 and have their malware crypted, rendering them fully undetectable.

Good security practices:

Don't immediately open attachments or click on suspicious looking links
Hackers are very good at creating fake emails that look like they are legitimate (usually malware disguised as legitimate files). Either ignore such requests or independently verify that the supposed source did send the email to you. It is also good practice to at least scan the links or files with Virustotal.

Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware software
Install good anti-virus and anti-malware software that periodically searches for and removes threats. Make sure to keep the software updated at all times and set a scan schedule.

Spam Filters
The forum database was compromised in 2015 which resulted in the emails associated with the accounts being dumped. You are likely already receiving some spam emails due to this. Your email provider my have decent spam filters that will block out some spam.

Be careful with everything
Always be careful with what kind of files you download and run, or what kind of drives you plug into your machine. Both may contain self-executing and undetectable malware.

Use common sense
Nobody is going to give you some *get-rich* Bitcoin mining software, nor is somebody going to sell you any kind of legitimately acquired goods at unreasonably low prices. Do not download and run software from unknown/random users on a machine that you actively use. Even running it inside a VM may not be safe enough.

Untrusted Websites
Don’t visit untrusted websites and take everything you read with a small grain of salt. Hackers tend to create fake websites and pop-ups with enticing messages that are intended to lure you in and download malware. There have been a lot of phishing attacks such as: Phishing ADs on Google, fake Bitcoin wallets on iOS and Google Play stores, etc.

10265  Economy / Collectibles / Re: sell/info casascius 0.1 very rare btc/ ty for help on: October 17, 2016, 09:58:27 PM
It really comes down to the condition of the coin. This isn't a "very rare" coin IMO, as there are a fair number of those minted. I also don't think the added funding makes it special nor does it add to the value (excl. the funded amount). If it grades MS #69 you could look at 1 BTC (+ 0.15 BTC). You could try to put it on auction.

10268  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 1mb is too big on: October 17, 2016, 06:18:59 PM
If their genuine intent is to block SegWit, then I'm happy to go on record as stating that's unreasonable behaviour.
That's a rather rational statement that is very rare in r/btc. I've seen fanatics praise the 'potential blocking' of Segwit. I've also seen absurd claims that Segwit is an altcoin.

I'm hoping that the actual reason has more to do with coding compatibility, for example, trying to get SegWit and Xthin working in conjunction and it taking a bit of time to figure that out before BU and others can add Segwit to their code.
It's up to the BU team to keep up to date with everything, and not up to the other teams to slow down if they can't catch up. Xthin wasn't really anything special, and BU is already outdated (isn't it at 0.12.1 IIRC?).

How do you mean 1 mb is to big maybe a cuouple of years ago the 1mb was to big for your mobile phone but dont think that in this time 1 mb is really less for something like that  you know.
You clearly have no idea what you're talking about so I'd advise you to stop posting nonsense.
10269  Economy / Auctions / Re: [0.01] Potential Full Member Bid Now [0.001] on: October 17, 2016, 05:16:25 PM
Can you provide a signed message? Does the account have any outstanding loans, or trust ratings? What about past bans? Could you provide the token ID for verification?
10270  Other / Meta / Re: Is it just me or has the quality of this forum dropped immensely on: October 17, 2016, 12:25:00 PM
Signature campaigns have brought some spammers, but that has brought many new users and made this forum as good place to advertise
Don't make me laugh, because that is pure nonsense right there.

Don't just look at the negative side, there many campaign participants who doesn't spam and more campaign managers trying hard to kick out spammers.
What you call *hard* I call almost not doing anything.
10271  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [RAFFLE] - Cat's Mysterious 32 Spot Raffle on: October 17, 2016, 10:07:53 AM
Does the price drop include the tickets not paid for yet?  Wink
Yes of course! The only affected tickets are the ones that have been paid for already.
10272  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [RAFFLE] - Cat's Mysterious 32 Spot Raffle on: October 17, 2016, 10:04:28 AM
No not yet so i am entering every raffle i see with one
You could attempt to buy one directly, although that would set you back by about 0.5 BTC (Kialara Original 2014).

Any price drop would probably help, If that doesn't work quick enough you could say something like anyone who has already purchased 2 or more tickets could get 1 more at half price.
Let's see how it goes from now: Price reduced to 0.011 BTC.
10273  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [RAFFLE] - Cat's Mysterious 32 Spot Raffle on: October 17, 2016, 09:47:05 AM
Just joking on the Kialara (although i do love them)
Do you own one?

I have noticed that the cheaper raffles fill up quicker, maybe reducing the price instead of adding extra prizes might be a better option.
I could reduce it to 0.011 for now (~7$) if that is fine with the people that already have paid as I can not refund this (raffle address is in cold storage now).

What is the average btc worth of each prize package so far?
I truly have no idea considering the current market situation.
10274  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [RAFFLE] - Cat's Mysterious 32 Spot Raffle on: October 17, 2016, 09:29:44 AM
I think you may have to bump this with a little incentive, throw in a Kialara if you have one sitting around  Wink
I tried adjusting the raffle with a lowered price point (initial ticket price was a bit higher). I own Kialara Original, but that would be overkill considering the market value of such. I could either go with another Ravenbit Green or a Cryptolator 0.1 MS 69, but I'm trying to figure out where the problem lies (e.g. is a lot inadequate, since I wouldn't want 5 lots due to shipping).
10275  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's wrong with my current cold storage? - Weaknesses in cold storage methods on: October 17, 2016, 09:17:33 AM
Thanks, I changed it to this

'A pre-funded physical bitcoin coin (where the manufacturer generates and installs the secret key)'

to reflect the proper terminology.
Thank you. I think that you could now write up on how to mitigate some of these risks. Example with hard drives is that you keep at least 3 backups, including drives of three separate manufacturers (this pretty much destroy the risk of short term data loss).

-snip-
All this combined, I'm ready for bigger blocks Smiley
All of that is irrelevant to the question of whether that is (safely) feasible.

So are two mining pools and approximately 11% of the total hashrate (at the time of writing), it seems.
ViaBTC is a joke: "We want on chain scaling" -> Segwit release imminent (on chain scaling) -> "Let's block Segwit". A bit ironic, isn't it?

10280  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will Quantum Computers Spell the Doom of Bitcoin? on: October 16, 2016, 07:25:22 PM
However, the timeline for the appearance of the first quantum computer is nowhere in sight, at least at the moment. According to Cheng, the quantum computers will threaten Bitcoin’s cryptography by easily backtracking the public keys, which are nothing but Bitcoin wallet addresses to deduce the private key associated with it.  In a likely scenario of that happening, the first quantum computer’s owner may be able to own most, if not all the Bitcoin in circulation.
Correct. However, for one to have the public keys of an address, the address has to spend coins from it. The reference client is actually inherently "quantum-proof" because it keeps sending any change Bitcoin to a new address. As long as you do not re-use addresses, you *should* be fine.

though changing both would be best. but definitely ECDSA first
That's likely what is going to happen, so I wouldn't worry about "Quantum doomsday" stories like these.
