It's pretty normal In my opinion as most of bitcoin services have hidden fees unless they state otherwise in their fees page. Somehow , It's the users fault as well because these services would never exist If people don't use them . I'm almost sure that people switched from PayPal for example to bitcoin just because of the fees , so seeing bitcoiners using bitcoin debit cards with high fees is definitely not something logical.

Miners kept mining when the price was like 250$ at some point so I don't see them stopping to mine anytime soon. I find that the less fees the more acceptable they are. High fees are really something easy to avoid If you trade with individuals instead of trading with companies. If we take Neteller or Payoneer for example , both of them allow card to card transaction which are easy to make and cost low fees , 1% or even zero , I find this way of trading more convenient.

You did good by making the decision to stop using online wallets because they are indeed risky to use.
