Does smf allow the sort order to be ordered chronologically by first post instead of being by Last Post?

That would be magnificent.
10482  Bitcoin / Press / Re: Guidelines for Press board on: April 13, 2012, 07:36:07 PM
Hi Jeff,  I'm wondering why you chose this particular day to lock the other topic and start this one?

Did you know just yesterday http://bitcoinpress.com was launched with a similar intent?

Perhaps only coincidence.

Funny. I think the point of time was chosen by my. I remembered the idea somehow (maybe relevant thread bump) and PMed theymos about the subboard. Only a little later did I discover bitcoinress.com.

I assure it was not intentional.

10483  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: BitPak - The Bitcoin Wallet for iOS on: April 12, 2012, 07:37:23 PM
question is: can you scan a qr-code to send someone money on the go this way?

No, but there are plenty of free qr reader apps available that allow you to easily copy/paste scanned text.

It isn't quiet convenient, but you don't have to have a jail broken phone or add a Korean app store account to your phone.

well, personally, I'll just use my android. But for recommending bitcoin to noobs with an iDevice copy/paste is too much to explain.
10484  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: iPhone IOS Bitcoin wallet is here! (From Blockchain.info) on: April 12, 2012, 01:31:51 PM

I think throwing a jquery mobile theme (or something similar) on blockchain.info might be a simpler solution than the app store.

Having it actually in the app store is great for promotional purposes, web apps just aren't quite the same.

+1

Seems there is a divide by zero somewhere. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

HOPE!
10485  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: BitPak - The Bitcoin Wallet for iOS on: April 12, 2012, 01:18:20 PM
The download of the chain took almost a week (ok i only have 4k internet here....) i transfered 3 bitcoin to it and they are not showing up, since a week....

Im curious why this is so damn slow ......

Left the phone open all night for almost three weeks now, with the app in foreground. I'll try it at home with my 16k internet today.

Waste of money and time imo (voll der Dreck) Sad There is just no usefull BTC wallet app for iOS. But if you want a nice Bitcoin app with active support, get BTCmon !

voll der dreck, indeed.

there's a acceptable solution, the blockchain.info client: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=75673.0
it's still buggy on my iPod, but seems to work for most people. Good design and acceptable security.

you need jailbreak or korean iTunes account (one is provided in thread or on page, dont remember which)

You can also use the website directly on your phone.  I have the jailbroken app installed on my old phone and just browse to blockchain.info on my current phone.  It doesn't have as good of a theme, but seems to actually be a little faster and more stable (although the iphone app seems to be getting better and better every patch)

question is: can you scan a qr-code to send someone money on the go this way?
10486  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Date for 25 BTC per Block on: April 12, 2012, 12:59:18 PM
That puts the date sometime on December 7th, 2012.
At this point, those betting on it being December 9th or earlier are on the winning side.  The wagers are 4X more for that than for the "later than December 9th" side:

It could end up being a photo finish!  This last adjustment period id is looking like we'll end up with a 3% drop in difficulty.  Some that had to do with the mining on blocks that became orphaned, thanks to miners that hadn't upgraded to code that supported changes to the Bitcoin protocol.

That puts the date late December 8th, 2012.  The bet says December 9th or later so there is still more than 24 hours cushion for the "December 9th or earlier" side of the bet (the "agree").  But a lot can happen yet.  With 22% margin, either the price needs to go up or there will be more GPU miners droppng out.
 - http://bit.ly/HEzoMm  (minng profitability currently 22%)

If, due to exceptional circumstances, we end up with a diff drop of 3% that doesn't reflect a drop hashrate, then that difficutly was measured "wrongly" and we're hashing blocks faster than 1 block per 10 minutes in the coming period, which will effectively move the date closer, no?
10487  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: iPhone IOS Bitcoin wallet is here! (From Blockchain.info) on: April 12, 2012, 08:55:23 AM
I tried sending money again and (after asking if I wished to label and save the address) it goes to some strange shaded mode (light in the middle, darker to the outside, like being lighted by a small spotlight) and just sits there (about 3 minutes now).

I don't really know what else to try. I've tested it an old iPhone 3G (iOS 4.2.1) and a 4G (iOS 5.1) and cannot replicate it. Is it possible you could try and get one more crash log?

just fyi. this is a pretty much vanilla iPod (installed a couple of games from appstore before). I only jailbroke it to install blockchain.

I'm trying again, but it doesn't get around to crash any more, just makes my iPod unusable. (cannot get to menu or taskmanager, only thing left to do is turn on/off "voiceover" or switch off the device.

did you actually receive any crash reports by your new method? if not, maybe you can remove it again in the next version so maybe we stand a chance again to get a crash report and the symbols work?

finally, newest version runs on 2.1. Many thanks, Jan!

this is awesome.

some remarks:
  • my screen is 320x240. is there anything below "transaction history" button on main screen? the button is 2/3 visible and no scrollbar appears
  • on the "send bitcoins" page, there is a scrollbar (generally it's good to have one), but if you can save one pixel somewhere, it would disappear, so that might be a slight beautification for small screens
  • how to get a new receiving address?

thanks again for taking the effort to "port" to android 2.1
10490  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: iPhone IOS Bitcoin wallet is here! (From Blockchain.info) on: April 10, 2012, 04:57:52 PM
I'm experiencing a crash when hitting "review payment" button.

Thanks for the report, unfortunately I cannot get the report to symbolicate properly so am not able to get much from it. I've included an exception reported in 1.9 which will email me crash logs.

nice new features, man!

I tried sending money again and (after asking if I wished to label and save the address) it goes to some strange shaded mode (light in the middle, darker to the outside, like being lighted by a small spotlight) and just sits there (about 3 minutes now).

Is it trying to send crash report and that doesn't work (device has network access)?

After that I could get to main menu any more (by press of button), nor could I get to task manager (double click button). turning device off was the only option and very slow. it seemed the touch input wasn't working well and it was hard to slide the "turn device off" slider. weird.

10491  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Royal Canadian Mint just announced a new alternative to BitCoin on: April 09, 2012, 09:16:31 PM
If Canada or any other country did roll out a centralized dollar-backed Bitcoin chain, it would be great for Bitcoin because it would mean putting in place all of the infrastructure needed to run Bitcoin transactions.

And there are still a lot of advantages to a cryptographically secured digital currency even if it is dependent on a central trusted node that provides the currency backing.

I you've got a centralized system, what's the purpose of a blockchain?
10492  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Max Keiser Report on Bitcoins! 4/7/2012 on: April 09, 2012, 08:38:41 PM
When I said greed is good and that greed without bad consequences is the problem I meant that greed is a healthy and even a required impulse to drive progress, innovation and ultimately growth in the marketplace which benefits all of it's participants and that the cause of problems that arise in the marketplace when it's trying to progress, innovate and grow is the artificially removed risks of a loss.

As long as you have greed coupled with the risk of loss those two forces balance each other out and are healthy and required if your goal is to have the marketplace grow productively.

Oh and I agree there is no objective good or bad outside of trying to reach a specific objective goal.

I think I understand what you mean by "greed is good" and I agree to the extent that greed can greatly motivate people and doing selfish things can include be altruistic.

Now I have another problem: the growth paradigm.

To get back on topic, listen to what Bauwen says in the discussed video:

Quote
Imagine you're a martian and you come to this planet and you see this race of humans actually destroying the biosphere. And the reason they do this is because the believe the system is based on the idea that we have infinite material resources. And this is just not true. So becauase of compound interest and other features which mean we have to grow all the time and this creates this compound exponential growth. And the planet can no longer carry it, so this is the real crisis of our system.

you say "growth in the marketplace which benefits all of it's participants". I'm not so sure. What kind of growth is it? Does any growth create benefit?

Here's an example: I talked to a friend last night, he works in engineering and these guys are currently investing thousands of EUR into chaning a certain part of some machinery they sell, a part that is screwed onto some other part of the machine. What's the change? Well, they change it so that it breaks when you screw it off for maintenance so that the customer has to buy that part again.

That's driven by greed. Does it imply growth? Hell yea: more money is moved, more parts sold, GDP increases. Does it benefit all participants (or even just: is the sum of all participants' benefits positive): hell no! More natural resources are used, more work is expended, the uptime of the product is reduced and the maintenance cost increased.

So here we have a case of "growth" not being beneficial for the whole of society. War is another such case.

So no, greed is not necessarily good.
10493  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Max Keiser Report on Bitcoins! 4/7/2012 on: April 09, 2012, 06:57:53 PM
Greed simply means doing all things primarily in your own interest (either directly or indirectly).

In common usage it usually means doing all things primarily in your own interest, at the expense of others.

More and more scientific evidence seems to show us that cooperation tends to get one a better life than cut-throat
competition.  Some may suggest that is what separates humans (potentially) from wild animals... but even modern
studies seem to show us that there is more cooperation in, wild and red in tooth and claw, nature then we had previously
thought.

This little ancient allegory below I feel illustrates it very well ( despite it appearing on the surface as some sappy sunday school story,
it was originally Taoist, I think, but often gets mangled into some Christian form for use in the modern West ):

There is a story about a man who left this earth and was taken on a tour of the inner realms.  He was shown a room where he saw a large group of hungry people trying to eat dinner from a single large pot in the center of the room, but because their spoons were longer than their arms, they were frustrated.  "This," his guide told him, "is hell."  "That's terrible," the man exclaimed.  "Please show me heaven."  "Very well," agreed the guide, and off they went.  When they opened the door to heaven, the man was perplexed to see what looked like exactly the same scene:  there was a group of people with spoons longer than their arms and the same pot of food in the center of the room.  But as he looked more closely, he saw happy faces and well-fed bodies, for there was one important difference:  the people in heaven had learned to feed each other.

Greed is good... Greed without bad consequences is the problem.

did you just say something good not resulting in something bad is the problem?
binary logic fail  Grin

Greed is good PERIOD

It's what drives evolution and has driven it since the first spark of life. I kinda like evolution, don't you? Wink

There's no good or bad a priori and evolution is about survival.

I'm experiencing a crash when hitting "review payment" button.

I am unable to reproduce this, please post the crash logs if you can:

phew, no itunes. what the hell, ssh even better Wink

here we go, crash report version 1.6 when hittin "review payment" button (crashes reliably):

I really love this client and I hope piuk can do something to fix this.

I have submitted an update to fix this issue. Addresses will no longer be shown until the wallet is synced with the server.

For the time being. When you generate an address if you get the following error do not use that address:

thanks so much for acknowledging the problem and providing a fix!

App breaks if I do the following (3GS iOS v4.21):

* Go to send page (arrow up icon)
* Click "Scan From QR" button
* Instead of scanning QR code click on RED X button = app breaks

Hope someone can reproduce this.

nope, this works for me (4.3.3 (8J2))

looking into how to get a crash-dump for the other problem

that Michelle Bowans (?) guy from the p2p foundation is awesome:

Quote
There's a few things we like about Bitcoin. The first thing is, we call it a 'socialist sovereign currency', so it's a currency which is not created by the banks and it's not created by the state. It really exists because there is a human community, you know, the hacker community, the bitcoin community, which wants this to works and trusts the protocol that is designed to create the money.
So this is a kind of historical moment for [?] with failing currency: we used to have local currencies, then the nationstate came and basically destroyed them. The fact that we now have a working global currency that is created by a community - in our mind - is usually significant as a kind of symbolic moment in the history of mankind.

awesome!

He said he would use his media leverage to promote bitcoin. Go Max! and: thanks to bitpay for working with him. The 1 million goal still stands?

Yessir, we are still working on the video for it.  It's coming along nicely!

I'm experiencing a crash when hitting "review payment" button.

reproduction:
  • start client, wait for power button to be "white" (assuming that means synced)
  • go to send tab, scan qr code
  • enter amount "0.03" in my case, have enough funds
  • hit"Review Payment" button -> immediate crash (or close of app at least)

when I reopen the app (from "task-manager" that pops up when I double-click the iPods button), it says loading for a short period and then show the transaction overview tab. so I assume the app crashed before, is that correct?

anyone else experience that or can indeed send money?
