1101  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - Anonymous Currency Based on Ring Signatures on: May 21, 2014, 10:26:34 AM

Something making "cryptonote 1" vs "cryptonote 2" incompatible for forking purposes and which could require a new coin. If they have, on purpose, done various stuff in the past regarding things like un-optimizing code, as people write, chance is they will do it again even with changes on how the protocol operates, writes the blockchain, does the anonymity - stuff like that.

They sell their BCNs, get whatever they can in BTCs, say ok cryptonote 1 is dead (they hadn't much to lose anyway as MRO was taking the pie), then announce cryptonote 2 (and having the "testimony" of their good solution through cryptonote 1 which will make them the "innovators"), launch some kind of IPO to get even more money and voila. They've both got the money + killed the clones... sounds like a plan. MRO can then only hope to clone or adapt the new coin's features but with no moral high ground in terms of fairness.

This is the scenario that seems problematic - for me at least. Even announcing such a plan could make Monero crash. It's too high a dependency in terms of investment.

You're confusing CryptoNote and Bytecoin. BCN just happens to be an implementation where the devs had contact with CryptoNote before CN went public. Most of BCN's code even says "// Copyright (c) 2012-2013 The Cryptonote developers" right at the top so they might even have just gotten freebies from CN. CryptoNote devs are the real geniuses behind all this and they're NOT some secretive profit-seekers. They have a website and a forum where they actively respond to questions. If anyone radically improves CN, it will likely be them, which probably means it will be available for all CN forks to implement. They don't release their own cryptocurrencies, but merely monitor their proliferation and provide assistance.

Yes, I'm aware of this, but the Bytecoin people made CryptoNote into a coin. A coin which has issues and which might be heavily improved in more than one aspects, anonymity included (to a larger or lesser extent). It is unlikely that their familiarity with the code and their headstart has not produced insights on what they would do better, in the technical department, if they started the coin now. Every dev that makes his code has these flashes "ah, I wish I had gone that other route and fixed this from the start".

We'll see how it goes. If they do it, I'll just take my loss. It's a risk going against first mover but then again I can't go with first mover because of the premine. And all the laundry from one community to the other, it's damaging the ecosystem. Anyway.

You have to be literally retarded to invest in an economy where 80% of mined coins belong to devs and friends basically. Bytecoin devs aren't geniuses and aren't smarter than Monero devs, in fact based on how Monero devs have improved Bytecoin code so quick I would say it's the opposite. They just got lucky into being the first to get involved with CryptoNote. In my book, being the first at something doesn't guarantee anything. Bitcoin is not the first cryptocurrency ever, Litecoin is not the first scrypt currency ever... etc.
1102  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Bytecoin (BCN) wasn't 80% premined on: May 21, 2014, 01:01:45 AM
It was just a really really fast mine

Monero, once people realize all other anon coins are a joke.
1104  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - Anonymous Currency Based on Ring Signatures on: May 20, 2014, 10:00:23 PM

gmaxwell is one of Bitcoin's most important core devs, so this is not FUD or ignorance. He is a genuine expert. In the altcoin space, a pre-announced launch on this forum is considered 'fair', but it's likely you'd miss it if you only follow Bitcoin communication channels.

Some context is needed. gmaxwell is among those who believe altcoins have little reason to exist (there are many fair reasons to think that, and it's flat-out true for most altcoins). So he likely sees Bytecoin as a testbed for innovation from which Bitcoin can learn, but doesn't care for the ultimate fate of it as a separate currency.

From this perspective, Monero is ruining the party by doing a fair launch and overtaking Bytecoin is usage because Bytecoin devs might now lose interest because their coin isn't getting used. From our community's perspective, it's worth trying to make CryptoNote succeed on its own and only a publicly launched one has the legitimacy required to succeed.

The point about the emission curve is a fair one. Several of us including me wanted to change but the community as a whole didn't like it. It's not a huge deal -- after all Bitcoin has implanted an idea in our heads for how a coin "should" distribute over time, but there's no fundamental theoretical backing.

so he thinks that the only techonology that is worth investing (exisiting is bitcoin) this is no different from the narrow minds that we see here regarding anonimity and the dark coin fanatics who see no reason for any other alt existing in the anonymity space. as educated as he is, he is not above greed, closed mindedness, or any other characteristic that befalls FUD spreaders. His comment was negative and baseless. same as any FUD

I very much doubt gmaxwell is against new technology. After all, you don't have to launch a new altcoin for a new technology - it can be integrated into Bitcoin. He expands more on his views on Zero and CryptoNote here (his name is nullc): https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7765455

You can see that he's actually very positive on ring signatures and even recognizes bitcoin as "basically a privacy disaster" in one of the posts.

Why wouldn't the Bytecoin community want to change the retarded curve emmision? does this even need an answer.
1105  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [BCN] Bytecoin (CPU-mining, true anonymity) on: May 20, 2014, 09:19:46 PM
Who in hell would invest in an economy where 80% of the stuff is owned by a small group of people (in before  it isn't small and we have to blindly believe it). It's plain fucking retarded in my book. Why in hell you had to ruin this coin by making the distribution of mined coins so quick? Just do it over 10+ years like BTC and most coins, god. What about the closed source miner? everything about this coin is dodgy.
Im glad MRO saved this technology. Mining is way faster and the launch was fair.
1106  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [BCN] Bytecoin (CPU-mining, true anonymity) on: May 20, 2014, 04:51:42 PM
The only way to save this coin is to relaunch with a fair start for everyone. Of course, that won't happen because you're heavily vested.

The relaunch is here!

Monero.

No, once a fork forever is a fork  Grin

You are forgeting Litecoin is a fork of Bitcoin.
Bytecoin will always have the stigma of one of the dodgiest launches ever. Just like Quark, the "super fast mining" stigma will bite its ass forever, no matter what they do. The fact you have to have an act of faith and thing there is some huge community on the deep web and it's not just a small comunity of people and the devs holding is laughable at best.

Plus Monero has already improved everything Bytecoin tried to do in 2 years.
1107  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Best Alt coin to invest in 2014 on: May 20, 2014, 04:24:22 PM
Grin
Its my gut feeling that in the year 2014, more coin developers will place an emphasis on anonymity. Many coins are announcing the plans for adding anonymous features now, just as an after thought.

Seems like bitcoin was beta however mainstream beta. It is true we need more privacy. Bitcoin devs like Gavin Andresen find altcoins more interesting when they address the transactions differently. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxEWRORzLSc he says so in the first minute here. He doesnt mention Darkcoin by name but says only a few altcoins interest him. They are cool but will struggle with bitcoin for mainstream adoption. Wallets are cool too but only go so far as to stay within the confines of bitcoin protocol.

"The most technically solid method for protecting the anonymity of bitcoin transactions may be to create a new bitcoin altogether, starting with privacy as a first principle. That’s the approach taken by Darkcoin, an alternative cryptocurrency launched in January.  Darkcoin implements CoinJoin, though it calls the feature DarkSend." http://www.wired.com/2014/05/bitcoin-anonymous-projects/

Economicaly speaking:
same amount of max coins as bitcoin.                                 DRK 1 / 1 BTC
# of wallets 100x less the bitcoin                                       DRK 1 / 100 BTC
currently priced  100 drk to 1 btc1                                    DRK 100/ 1 BTC
far more anonymous then bitcoin will ever be.                       DRK 1/ 0 BTC
Truly genius full time Darkcoin developer Evan, who made the X11 algorythm for the next generation digital currencies.
X11 Over X3 times faster then bitcoin. 30% less electricity and heat by 50%.
Many factors have me, an unbiased cryptomaniac to prefer Dark. The final target price of DRK is atleast 1 to 1 BTC. I may sell a few when the price hits the mid 400s.  Cool

Once people realize MRO's superior anonimity to DRK this coin will explode. DRK is doomed due being a Bitcoin fork, which means big problems when trying to have fully functional ring signatures.

MinerGate cryptocurrency mining pool now supports Monero mining!
To start mining Monero on Minergate you just need to sign up and download a multiplatform miner.

Monero, please add MinerGate to your pool list in the original message.

Minergate uses CLOSED SOURCE SOFTWARE for their pool.  Monero devs, pool developer and numerous others have been working hard to create the OPEN SOURCE mining pool code.  Please support the Open Source concept and keep your miners pointed at one of the Open Source mining pools.

Tell me a good pool to mine with simpleminer please
1109  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - Anonymous Currency Based on Ring Signatures on: May 20, 2014, 02:04:15 PM
Guys, what is the best pool to mine at nowadays?
1110  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Zerocash paper released on: May 19, 2014, 06:34:54 PM
You'd have to be an idiot to use Zerocash, considering who funded the research.

This^^, Zerocash has too many flaws. Rather use Darkcoin.

Zerocoin and Darkcoin have flaws.

Monero on the other hand...

Darkcoin will be implementing Ring Signatures and I2P, plus it's existing masternodes which is better anonymity than Monero/Bytecoin I'm sorry to say, we also don't know that much about the CryptoNite protocol.

Masternodes can be traced and DDoS'd, Monero's technology is safer. By the time Darkcoin adds Ring Signatures, Monero will take the lead as the to-go anon route of the crypto world.

This coin is undervalued as hell.
1112  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][MRO] Monero - Anonymous Currency Based on Ring Signatures on: May 19, 2014, 12:45:06 PM
Can anyone explain me why would anyone invest in this currency instead of Darkcoin, Zerocash, Anoncoin, Fantomcoin or Quazarcoin??
Darkcoin is going to implement bytecoin's technology afaik so..

from your post history likes like you have a preference for dark coin.
please review the op and much of your questions will be easily answered.
basically different techology. not a bitcoin clone.

Yes, I know, but Monero is a Bytecoin clone. Thats my worry. Why invest in Monero when it depends on Bytecoin's devs basically.

Going to.. Monero already did it.

But go with your own guts. That works out for me better most of the time.

But Darkcoin has more features than Monero right? And evan seems like a legit developer, so I dont see the problem.
Once an anon coin makes it as #1 anon coin then it's pretty much over IMO.

1118  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NXT] Nxt - Official Thread on: May 18, 2014, 07:27:01 PM
For people like me who care about making it big, are too late to make big gains with this coin. 1 BTC gives me 1000 NXT, due to the big amount of total coin supply and the fact it's all in circulation, I don't see the point of making $1000 at best, when you can get 100 DRK for the money and 0.1 is realistic given tech and total coin supply.
It's 10758 for one btc now, not 1000.
I meant 10000, i missed a 0 obviously. It's still peanuts compared to the gains 100 DRK can make in the long run vs 10000 NXT long run.

I don't understand your logic, there will be around 6 times more drk than there are now in circulation, so more offer means low price (obviously not if more buyers, i know, but this is applied to nxt too without increassing the supply)
The tech is much much much better in nxt than in drk, drk is a bitcoin clone with little tweaks for anonimity, nxt is a platfform which can do the same as bitcoin plus many more things that none bitcoin or any clone will can do. It will include anonimity too, so what will darkcoin offer that nxt don't?
If nxt reach same market cap as BTC they will be at 5,4$, and in my opinion, nxt have much more chances for achieve this than darkcoin.

5'4$ is still jokes, Darkcoin could go to 100+ if it becomes the go-to anon cryptocurrency.
