May I know if you have even more boxes that have not been opened? If so, how many?

if you reverse his username. bfxhacker

what is bfx?
It's Bitfinex. Where have you been living all this time? There was a major breach at that exchange yesterday which caused the Bitcoin price to drop.
11123  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: 1000 BTC GIVEAWAY! From your friend rekcahxfb on: August 03, 2016, 02:16:39 PM
As all i can see that op has new account , then when did he made 10+ btc giveaway that you are mentioning?
Please use your brain and do some research before posting. You can easily see that he has given away several Bitcoin to different people from the address linked in OP.

Since the signature does verify I guess it's worth a try.
The person is 'legit'.
11124  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: 1000 BTC GIVEAWAY! From your friend rekcahxfb on: August 03, 2016, 02:13:40 PM
Yeah, thats what I meant. You got 1 BTC and mitchell as well. There will be many posts and addresses here so my chance of winning will be small. No risk, so why not.
That is correct. Unfortunately, there will be many brand-new/newbie accounts trying to abuse this.

Wow! How did he manage to have that huge amount  ? From gambling?  Or own pocket?
No idea. They are from 2013, so they're surely not related to Bitfinex.
11125  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: 1000 BTC GIVEAWAY! From your friend rekcahxfb on: August 03, 2016, 02:04:37 PM
Have you considered giving away smaller prizes to more people?
They have already done that.

Signature checks out, not that I expect 1000 BTC from you.
Well, he did give away over 10 BTC already from what I can see. However, considering the time-frame and no limitations (e.g. minimum senior member would be reasonable), I expect a lot of posts here.

Do you have any suggestion on how to margin trade without keeping the coins on the exchange? Please don't answer "don't margin trade" Tongue
Unfortunately, no. I wouldn't know a good way to do this if you're a trader. Users can and should stay away from both web wallets and exchanges (and other online services), as in they shouldn't keep their coins there. As far as 'normal' trading is concerned, the only good(?) alternative seems to be (I haven't tested it myself): Bitsquare.

I guess (and hope) that this event will further evolve the systems that are being used by exchanges.

You know I actually don't have the nerves for this nonsense I will just quit  Grin
There you have it. I had originally suggested this in step 2:
Step 2) Enjoy a life free of drama.
It wasn't worth my time, and I'll assume it isn't worth yours either (the potential drama).
11130  Economy / Reputation / Re: Mr. Lutpin and the Betcoin incident on: August 03, 2016, 11:21:06 AM
First off I wasn't aware of any scam accusations against this website when I joined 2 months ago.
Neither was I, at the time when I joined. I ended up being a participant for less than 10 days (IIRC) in July.

Second of all I don't need the money THAT badly and it looks like you are getting a far better remuneration package off this forum than me so I don't understand why you involved money matters in this question of mine when clearly this has nothing to do with it.
I simply asked a question, there's nothing more to it. Putting money aside, what would your primary reason be for promoting a business with 'shady practices'?

This thread wouldn't have even existed if there hadn't been a threat towards me in the first place. I can join another campaign no biggie but I don't want to slim in the illiterate cesspool of nonsense that some of the others literally are just to rake up some pennies for the weekly or monthly pittance they are offering.
You should take it as a friendly warning from DT members. Generally, the issue isn't just black and white and there's more to it. The last time that I've checked, a DT2 member was also wearing their signature at the time (they did not have negative trust though).

Multi-sig Hot wallet
- Provided by BitGo (BitGo FAQ)
- Only holds minimal amounts (~0.5% of customer funds)

I am a bit confused by their statement: does the hot wallet only hold 0.5% of customer funds? Where are the remaining? (99.5%)
Thank you for that. I haven't visited Bitfinex often so I would not know myself. This is interesting, and from what I can gather:
1) This information was false to begin with (their staff member on reddit claims that there's no cold storage layer).
2) Something/someone made them change the way that they hold their coins which ultimately led to this.

ok just confirmed that the cold storage thingie was there before the migration to bitgo in mid 2015
So the information on the website was just outdated?
11132  Economy / Reputation / Re: Mr. Lutpin and the Betcoin incident on: August 03, 2016, 10:59:22 AM
Step 1) Stop promoting shady and/or scamy businesses (I don't want to get into the details of whether it is or isn't one) in your signature.
Step 2) Enjoy a life free of drama.

Do you really need the money that badly? Just join another campaign if you have to. Note: This doesn't really fit into Meta.
11133  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Bitfinex Hacked] So , learned the lesson ? on: August 03, 2016, 08:24:35 AM
Would it bring more safety if withdrawls on exchanges would be only possible to addresses the user gives his ok to in advance?
Re-using addresses for such huge amounts ain't a good idea either. Generally, it would be more safe to do that. However, this is a better suggestion and worthy of a new BIP (IMO):

In my view, what's needed is a way to lock coins to a new address type that forces a delayed clearing process for all coins transferred from that address. Transactions could then be revoked by the owner during the clearing phase which would become progressively less likely as the clearing phase progresses. This would be a very simple way to detect fraudulent transactions before its too late, as well as to allow for the creation of cryptographically provable accounting records (with browse-based signing) to be tied to the clearing process for withdrawals.

In English: this would allow an exchange to detect when something doggy was going on with withdrawals without imposing the same limitations of a decentralized exchange (like low liquidity and poor usability.) It would be the best of both worlds which would be great for not only exchanges but all kinds of merchants who are forced to handle Bitcoins directly as part of their business practices.
11134  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Bitfinex Hacked] So , learned the lesson ? on: August 03, 2016, 08:15:21 AM
Prior to the recent breach, Bitfinex was claiming that they were using secure cold storage and multisig.
They claimed that they had used cold storage? Source?

I didn't lose anything any of the attacks against exchanges, Finex or otherwise, but I just wanted to tell you that you're not the sharpest tool in the shed.
Much sharper than the majority of the rusty tools in the Bitcoin ecosystem. I've yet to suffer a singular loss of any scam, hack and whatnot. Even though a decent amount of people keep advising against keeping coin on exchanges, web wallets and whatnot, people still keep at it.

Traders have no choice but to put their trust in an exchange
I couldn't care less about day-traders, and they aren't the people that I was referring to.

Saying that Finex is not at fault here is hilarious, and frankly you should be embarrassed.
I may have incorrectly written my statement. However, as long as you keep blaming the services for hacks (nothing is unhackable), you will keep suffering losses.

I don't get this one either , how could use Multi sig + cold storage and still get hacked for millions of dollars ? I will take my chances and say that this is an inside job.
There was no cold storage layer. Multi-signature can be hacked by compromising the keys which were all apparently stored at the same layer.
11135  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bitfinex. Will they cover the 65 million dollar BTC Theft or just fold? on: August 03, 2016, 07:43:42 AM
I really don't know how they will handle this situation because that is really a huge amount. If they can cover that, well that would be great.
Great for who exactly? The ignorant people who kept a large amount of money on a singular service that is online 24/7, which is completely counter-intuitive to securing your own Bitcoin?

However, if not, then we must learn some lessons from it.
I've seen the word "must" hundreds of times, yet most people learn nothing from this. It's time to stop talking and start doing something.

Storing bitcoin/money online is always a risk that's why we must consider things like this before deciding to put such amount.
You don't say?
11136  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Bitfinex Hacked] So , learned the lesson ? on: August 03, 2016, 07:28:44 AM
I'd say no. The people who had lost considerable amounts of money there, are at fault, not Bitfinex. Nothing is unhackable, and online exchanges are generally valuable targets for various hackers. It seems like the people in question (who suffered losses) have learnt nothing from Mt.Gox, Cryptsy and so on. Generally, if Bitcoin is stored on an address to which you do not hold the private keys to, then you do not own them. In this case: If it is stored in such a multisignature implementation where online services can just avoid you and move the money from the address, then you don't own them either.

Just withdraw your funds from exchanges .
Exactly. I pulled some that I had left on Bitstamp as soon as Bitfinex went down.
11137  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bitfinex. Will they cover the 65 million dollar BTC Theft or just fold? on: August 03, 2016, 07:15:19 AM
Honestly, every single person who lost money there is at fault. Have these people learnt nothing from Mt.Gox? Keeping high amounts of Bitcoin on online services is just a 'theft waiting to happen'. Bitfinex made two mistakes in their setup:
1) No cold-storage layer.
2) No withdrawal limit/sanity check.

I couldn't care less whether these people get their money back. I'm more interested in how the hacker managed to get the money out of a multi-signature implementation.

anyone has the hash link from these 120k bitcoins?
They obviously aren't on 1 address.

11139  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ransom note on: August 02, 2016, 07:57:28 PM
Most people are not familiar with the data recovery software out there and they would pay without thinking about other alternatives.
I'd say that a good number of such software is as hard as using Microsoft Paint.

Even if they knew about this software, they would pay someone else to recover the data.
Which comes back to their ignorance and stupidity.

Why risk doing the data recovery by yourself and then possibly losing everything?
What risk? You won't kill your data with data recovery software.

Before I do data recovery, I clone the disk with a docking station, and that way the original source remains intact, just in case something goes wrong.  Grin
I'd expect this to be too much for the people in question.

11140  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ransom note on: August 02, 2016, 04:34:18 PM
So what's the name on the ransom note?
zepto, it's a new version of locky
Interesting. After spending a small time researching, there seems to be information regarding the removal of the ransomware. According to some sources, it doesn't encrypt the original files but rather creates encrypted copies. I highly suggest reading up a lot on this matter on Google. A possible method for recovery here is the standard software used for recovery of the deleted files. I've also seen suggestions ranging from manual (e.g. booting into safe-mode and trying to get rid of it) to automated tools. That friend should consider the amount of valuable data stored on the computer and their exact location (depending on usage patterns this may be easy). You should try recovering these files, if successful a simple format would solve the problem and save a lot of money.

I would not pay that. I think those 2 coins would be better invested if he bought himself a new computer and a few usb sticks to save the important data.
Another useless post. How would the friend save important data on the USB sticks if it that is already encrypted/lost? Roll Eyes
