11142  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ransom note on: August 02, 2016, 03:55:16 PM
There are three things I'm afraid of, first me getting assosiated with he ransom, which can be no problem if someone investigate, then I just show them the whatsup conversation I had with this familly frind.
I don't think an outgoing transaction would get you in trouble, an incoming one may.

Second the ransom software will somehow learn who I am and will target me
Anyone with detect computer skills should be able to avoid this script-kiddie malware stuff online these days.

and third that they won't release the encrypted files and this friend will say I didn't pay them (I guess this can be avoided by sending the friend to the blockchain to view the transaction).
You have a fair point here. Get him to install Electrum or a similar SPV client. Additionally, I made a small edit that you didn't see:

Depending on the type of malware, it is possible to 'unlock' the system.
So what's the name on the ransom note?
11143  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ransom note on: August 02, 2016, 03:47:25 PM
Unless the files are 'irreplaceable' as in extremely valuable (regardless whether it's monetary or sentimental value), I advise against paying them. These attacks would have stopped a long time ago if people did not pay and had created backups as they already should have. The primary lesson here is to have a minimum of 1 backup, although there are various backup plans (e.g. 3-2-1) that users should be familiar with. This becomes even more important when Bitcoin users are in question (e.g. wallet file could go corrupt).

As for ransomware viruses attacking specific groups; they will infect anything they can find. Their purpose is to make money for the creator and not specifically harass anyone.
The primary reason for which this ridiculous type of attack works is because people are ignorant and dumb when it comes to technology. A singular backup can easily make this kind of attack obsolete.

Should I do that or should I ask him to install a wallet and send to him instead?
It doesn't really matter for the end result. The people behind the malware don't care where the money is going to come from. Depending on the type of malware, it is possible to 'unlock' the system.
11144  Local / Hrvatski (Croatian) / Re: Hardfork i 2mb blokovi on: August 02, 2016, 01:12:17 PM
11145  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Another closed door Core - Chinese miners meeting on: August 02, 2016, 10:23:30 AM
They came out to meet with many parties in the area, in fact. You just hear about it in this case.  The meeting was mostly social-- discussing our common passion (Bitcoin) and trying to improve communication.
The community can't know that and they'd have to believe in someone's words which is what is worrisome here.

I think notes are going to be posted, in fact, because we're dweebs like that.
That would be beneficial indeed.

Is there a meeting? Why am I not invited?  Grin
I hope that you're joking.

Is this meeting related to the sudden drop of Bitcoin and the sudden climb of some alt coins?
Random prices movements are pointless to waste time on, so the answer is no. Most people panicking about small movements in the Speculation section have nothing better to do with their lives.

11147  Other / Meta / Re: Proposal: remove steemit links on: August 02, 2016, 08:02:30 AM
Barring that - at least maybe we could get some input from the moderation staff whether this is tolerated or should be reported.
There's no specific 'decision/rule' regarding that website at the moment (I haven't even noticed it so far), however, I'd say that it falls under advertisement spam (rule 24). I've also notified theymos and a global moderator right now regarding the matter. Personally, I support the removal of these links (when abused, not in general) and would advise that punishments be handed out to the users that have already abused it. I'll update this post with some information if neither provide direct input.
11148  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Another closed door Core - Chinese miners meeting on: August 02, 2016, 07:47:40 AM
Agreed. Can you tell your friends at Core to stop doing it?
I don't have a singular friend that contributes to Core. I'd say that I have as much influence as you do. Keep in mind that there have been other individuals that have initiated closed-door meetings in the past (an example would be Garzik and the miners IIRC).

Yes, agree again, the ham-fisted way in which this FOMC meeting social event was conducted has sliced 10% off the Bitcoin price so far.
No. That's not necessarily the cause, although I'm certain that some people would like to paint that picture.
11149  Other / Meta / Re: Please remove/lock scam attempt threads on: August 02, 2016, 06:30:27 AM
Based on some certain number of reviews from Staff/DT members, we might have classifications like 'possible scam attempt' and 'confirmed scam attempt' (Already warnings are being issued similar to these).
Then a thread which is being concluded as 'confirmed' (by considerable amount members) must be removed or perma locked. Just suggesting yet again.
That classification may indeed be alright. I don't see staff interfering at 'possible scam attempts' as this could do damage if some of us occasionally make a bad call or two. On the other hand, getting rid of confirmed scams may be a bit redundant. Wouldn't you say that, after something has been confirmed to be a scam (posts, threads, negative rating), that almost everyone avoids it? Additionally, if we lock/remove their thread, then we would have to keep an eye out for them so that they don't bring it up once more.
Don't get me wrong, I would not mind cleaning up some sections in regards to that, but the current rules do not involve handling either potential nor confirmed scams.
11150  Other / Meta / Re: Please remove/lock scam attempt threads on: August 02, 2016, 06:05:21 AM
I don't see why we would generally just get rid of those threads, or are they random examples? If you had read the forum rules, you would have known that:

Scams aren't moderated here, though begging, spamming, and trolling are if you can believe it.

It's one of the strange things about this forum.
I don't think it's strange at all. Deciding whether something is a scam or not isn't as easy as you think (surely there are some obvious example, but then again there are complex ones as well). There's potential for great error. However, if someone feels like this should be changed then the thread should be oriented towards a rule change suggestion.

11152  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [ANN] Genesis Series 2 SOLD OUT!!!!! on: August 01, 2016, 09:02:07 PM
There is one prize left unclaimed, a .10 loaded lealana.
Thanks for the update. I wonder how many unopened boxes there are.

As far as just pumping out no worries dont think its going to be anytime soon.  For history, i put my first series i put up for sale may 2015 and my second may of 2016.
Okay, that sounds good. I also think that the market is 'decently' saturated with coins that aren't unique in any way (their designs just change a bit here and there). The Genesis series 2 was a very interesting concept.

As for a cash grab the second series was about a break even venture with all things involved, maybe took my wife out for dinner once or twice, lol.  Looking to try a couple new things and i hadnt even began refining any of my ideas so the box you won might be the last unopened product for awhile.  Good luck.
Really? I didn't mention anyone and most certainly did not imply you in any way in my statement. I think that the series was offered at a very good price!
11153  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [ANN] Genesis Series 2 SOLD OUT!!!!! on: August 01, 2016, 08:50:17 PM
I appreciate the compliment and the short answer is yes, in due time.  Will be a little bit though as im going to bring something to the market we might not have seen quite yet.  Wink
I would also highly recommend not doing that soon. It has become obvious to me when some of these coin creators start milking collectors for their money by constantly releasing new series (quantity is pointless). Additionally, I wanted to ask regarding unclaimed prizes in this set. I recall (quite some time ago) you saying that 2 or 3 were still unclaimed? Has anything changed since?

There's no time to play around with these boxes.

0.3 BTC
24 hours have passed since this bid, so I that makes me the winner?
11155  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Important Read: AMA with Andreas Antonopoulos & Chinese Bitcoin Community on: August 01, 2016, 08:32:23 PM
It seems by some of the questions, their community has been fed some incomplete or just false information.
This should not be of any surprise to anyone. A lot of the forkers are deliberately spreading false information that helps their own views.

Their major concerns center around 2MB HF and whether Blockstream and/or Core Devs are bad actors.
The people supporting Classic are the more likely candidates for bad actors.

But Andreas, in a neutral way (as he always attempts to do) sets the record straight with reasoning.
Indeed. He has properly answered all of the questions.

I think many of the big block supporters have lost sight of the primary function of the Core developers and that is not to make critical changes that might compromise the security of the network.
Some of them are becoming delusional at this point. I've seen some claims that the situation with ETH is a "healthy sign". Roll Eyes

Hello.
I've just completed your survey your survey, and I can't say that I'm satisfied with all of the questions. Question number 2 is too specific, IMHO it should be: 1) < 1 BTC
2) 1 - 10 BTC
3) 11 - 100 BTC
4) More than a 100 BTC.

I also feel like your English skills are lacking in this aspect (noticeable at question number 5). Question number 6: Needs to have an option where you don't want to submit your gender. The same goes for question number 9. Generally it wasn't that bad and took less than 1 minute to complete.

11159  Other / Meta / Re: Tipsters are cancer to the Gambling sections (exceptions apply). on: August 01, 2016, 01:37:07 PM
As already discussed, Lutpin makes a fair point in regards to this being a problem. Not only are the individuals in question breaking several rules themselves, they are usually letting their threads become (yet another) spam infestation. At least what they could do is:
1) Use self-moderated threads (frequent edits and deletions).
2) Adjust & follow the rules.
3) Stop spamming their referral links.

Personally I don't mind ref links in the tipster threads as a least they're putting some effort in and offering you some advice (you don't have to take it or click on the links), but I've warned people before for unnecessarily multi-posting so if you report those they will get deleted and if they continue a ban etc.
I still think that it should not be acceptable for them to constantly break several rules.

Maybe a Tipster section / discuss about gambling sub could be created. That would then clear up a lot of the crap from the Gambling section.
That may help indeed. However, that only moves the problem into a subsection, it doesn't actually solve it.
