Nothing hateful, just pointing out that you are not in any sort of appointed, academic, or political position nor are person of Social Interest to try and sway public opinion, just a random person getting up on a soapbox loudly proclaiming their opinion. Yes, in the US you have every right to do that - and we your unwilling audience have the same right to view you as we like, let you know it and as in this case, ignore ya.

And please try to understand that the Bitcoin blockchain is NOT for any sort of records keeping other than currency transactions even if just timestamps. There are many other chains created just for that.

And just who the hell are you to demand that any person or organization to do what you want? Ans: Nobody 'special', just a person with one helluva over developed sense of self importance... In your last paragraph you try to make it sound as if there is some sort of government or globally-recognized mandate to store records in a blockchain and WIV is ignoring it.

All BSL-4 biological laboratories MUST post the timestamps of all their records on the Bitcoin blockchain (and other blockchains too). Any failure to do this must be considered an act of warfare!
Guess what - nope.

That said, storing documents and records on some sort of blockchain -- good idea.
Storing them on the BTC blockchain -- horrible one as the BTC blockchain is NOT made for records keeping.

Considering they are one of the few makers of miners that generally have been able to get ASIC chips not at all surprised they are having excellent sales of miners.

since both C20 and C13 are rated @ 15A on the connectors
Well sort of.
NEMA puts the C20 at 15A but IEC rating is 19A. No idea why that is one of few places where the NEMA and IEC rating differ by so much. I've ran C19/20 combinations at 17A and they barely get warm so I'm comfortable with using the higher rating.

Has anyone taken a look at how BM is using the 2 power inlets? I hope to god they are not just bused together as powering 1 with the other unplugged will put 220V onto exposed pins either at the unconnected power inlet or male end of its cord...
1126  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S19j Power Questions on: September 15, 2021, 12:20:37 AM
C13 is not voltage specific, it is good for up to 250VAC. It is however limited to 13A max which is why the s19 uses 2 in parallel.

Yes a C20 to dual C13 splitter is how to do it properly.
Going back years (OK decades) from when they first came into use in data centers I was always taught that you never split them. 1 <-> 1 and that was it.
Has it changed or was I taught wrong?
-Dave
Not really, but... Reputable UL-listed cord makers like Stayonline.com do it as properly as it can be done, basically molding two heavy gauge C13 cords to a male C19 connector. That said, there is still the technical concern of using a C13 cord with a 20A outlet... So, using 2x C14 inlets is still not the best way to power a single piece of equipment (here a PSU) mainly because you must ensure that both inlets are always powered or un-powered together but at least for this application it works.

In the case of server PSU racks using n+1 arrays of smaller PSU's to feed a common output bus- the trusty HP CS PSU's come to mind - splitter is still definitely a no-no because if just 1 part of the cord goes bad you lose 2 supplies.

Why BM chose that route over using a single C19 inlet like Canaan does with their Avalons raises all sorts of questions about what they are doing.
Are the power inlets bused together inside of the PSU and feed 1 monster PSU or do they independently feed 2 smaller PSU's that work in master-slave mode?

I take it the test fixture did not come with any instructions Huh
I would think that whoever you bought it from should give you that information...
1128  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Need help with voltages/amp output on: September 13, 2021, 11:16:31 AM
Again, are you in North America? For purposes of discussion we MUST know where you are operating because as Mikey said early on, different countries/regions have different power setups.

Ref https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-phase_electric_power and start at the section labeled 'Generation and distribution'. Again, you would use the wye connection setup which is 3x lines + 1 neutral. The miners go across any 2 lines with line-to-line giving (240v), aux services go line-to-neutral giving (120v).

120/240v etc means line-to-line voltage is 240VAC. The neutral is in the middle of the phases so phase-to-neutral voltage is 1/2 the line-to-line voltage or 120V.

Though you will not be using it, here is how NA does split-phase power
In NA household voltage is 120vac single phase BUT that is tapped off of 2 lines along with a neutral from the 3-phase grid in what is called a split-phase arraignment. That gives L1 to N = 120v, L2 to N = 120V, L1 to L2 = 240v with the 240v used to power large loads like ovens, electric dryers, and air conditioners.

No idea about Raptor or their reasoning other than it is decided by how they divide up the power. eg do they use line-to-line or line-to-neutral.

Hello!!

I’m in the process of setting up a mining facility and I am having a difficult time figuring a few things out.

To start, this will be powered by a natural gas generator that outputs 3 phase at 120/208. It has 12 reconnectable leads so the voltage can be changed in my understanding (to either 127/220, 120/240, 139/240, 220/380, or 277/480). Would any of these work? Preferably 120/208 or 120/240 due to retention of peak amperage output. 208v 3 phase delta would supposedly be great, but I’m not sure if 120/208 fits that bill?

<snip>
Reading your replies, you are over thinking things: If you are in North America then using the taps for 120/240 is perfect, that is a 3-phase wye connection with a center neutral that is also the power ground point.

All the other taps are for international power compatibility. Biggest thing you want is the 240VAC phase-to-phase and 120V phase-to-neutral. The 120v is just for powering things like security & monitoring systems, lights, small equipment like a vacuum or small pressure blower for cleaning the miners from time to time.

Biggest thing to keep in mind is that the genset will be running 24x7x365: That means it must be rated for what is called Prime Power usage. Normal standby-rated gensets MUST be shut down and serviced every few days, for one thing to change the oil and filter, another is to replace the brushes that feed power to the rotor. Prime power gensets run for months before needing to be looked at and that is mainly just topping off the oil reservoir and changing the oil filters - both of which are done w/o/ shutting down.

1131  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 2021, time for a new general & diff speculation thread... on: September 11, 2021, 01:58:58 AM
If you were China government you could do this.  Real gear and chip restriction. To the entire world.
Fortunately China does not have control of the Chip production.
Ja. There are no Foundries in China that are capable of producing 10nm chips much less 7 or 5nm ones. The major makers of mining gear and owners of their specific chip designs are Chinese-owned but,
 a) all the actual producers (Foundries) of cutting-edge much less bleeding-edge chips are located in Taiwan, Korea, and the US.
 b) if pressured by the Chinese government the miner makers will just move assembly operations to a different country.
 c) worse comes to worst, they will startup new miner manufacturing companies in a different country.

If you found the answer then just lock the thread.  Bottom left corner of page.  Wink

Sorry, scanned through the thread again and saw mention of "optimization of storage", thought of Filecoin and that led to the comment about alts. Post deleted

One disconcerting thing I see is
Quote
Vo[0] PS[0 0 0 0 0 0]
which should be the PSU output voltage. No idea why it says zero.
Standard questions:
How long was miner running when you grabbed that log?
What is the line voltage feeding the miner? It MUST be between 200-240VAC
What is air temperature of the room  or inlet side of the miner?
Any other miners have similar issues at the same time?

Along the lines of ^^ here is what can happen with aggressive over clocking: https://www.reddit.com/r/BitcoinMining/comments/pk7x8o/my_l3_caught_on_fire_due_to_aggressive/
Wanna bet we see more reddit posts like that if someone pushes S19's to the 200T realm?

I think going to school is not all about learning a particular course ,but learning people's behavior, how to tolerate one's attitude, being socially acceptable in the eyes of the society and developing good character, is education. One can go to school, and yet remain uneducated because of his characters. The way you behave makes people to access and judge you as an educated person,or an educated illiterate.
Bingo. Problem is, at least in the US, today's society no longer allows schools & teachers to teach and enforce the concept of proper behavior. When students act badly they are almost never punished with more than a stern look and head shaking. People who should be Authority are not allowed to do anything to 'damage' the students 'fragile' view of themselves so they never learn what is right and what is wrong behavior. Given that they are now learning that there are (probably) no real consequences to bad behavior students are now being taught that being a self-centered irresponsible jackass is 'ok'.

Have you got inline fans in the ducting or are you only relying on the S19 itself to move the air?

I would buy some 3D printed ducts designed for the S19 which include the PSU aswell (yes they do exist). Then plumb it up front and back direct to those ducts in your box.
As gt mentioned - unless the ducting leading into & out of the box is VERY short you need booster fans as well to overcome airflow resistance through the ducts. The fans on a miner were sized assuming free airflow into/out of the miner. Ductwork of any kind - especially flexible ducts - add a LOT of resistance to the airflow. Considering the fans are rated for 250CFM each and we only need to consider one side (inlet or outlet, take your pick w/2 fans) that means you should have a booster good for at least 500CFM and >750CFM would be better. Probably a small blower is best.
1137  Other / Off-topic / Re: What's your view on cannabis? on: September 07, 2021, 03:29:00 PM
In many countries marijuana, or Cannabis, is considered illegal. Some governments deem its use to be as dangerous as consumption of hard drugs like cocaine and heroin.
But, in some parts of the world it is not illegal and laws are changing all over the world. Many places will experiment with medical marijuana to see if it really does help with certain ailments and diseases.
Cannabis was made illegal in most countries back in the 1920's at the behest of the US government. Before the US began badgering them about it most other countries in the world did not care the slightest about cannabis.

The reasons behind the US government actions are fodder for a different topic (none of them were valid and were mostly driven by racial discrimination and the associated fearmongering). Thankfully after over 100 years of repression, Truth and Reason are finally prevailing and most states in the US now acknowledge and allow its use for medical reasons. Even better, many states took that 1 step further by legalizing it (at a lower potency then medical-grade) for recreational use.

On the medical side, I for one will testify to its effectiveness in reducing neurological pain: Several years ago I had a case of Shingles and am one of the unlucky 1-in-5 people that suffer with permanent nerve damage from it. Medical cannabis alleviates the pain very well. Another well documented case is it's effectiveness in helping those with epilepsy.

Yep, Satoshi is about to show up - along with the 2nd coming of Christ, Muhammad, and Buddha. They're all planning a huge party for the get-together, you mean you weren't invited?  Wink

Flare gas mining is old news but it never hurts to remind folks about it.

I 1st came across it in 2015 and yes, it makes perfect sense because the simple fact is that flaring incurs huge CO2 emission penalties but the penalties are not assessed just because the gas is being burned - it is because the gas is burned without producing any useful work. If the waste gas is used to power generators, pumps, etc then there is no flaring charges for the gas that is used. In the case of using generators to power miners it's a win-win with no or greatly reduced flaring costs and a nice profit from mining.

It will be cheaper if you do it by yourself, it’s really easy and if you have some electrical questions, just ask.
Bullshit. You are not talking about adding a few low power outlets to a room or opening up and working on a moderately low power (compared to commercial/industrial capacity) household breaker panel.

The knowledge required to properly and above all - SAFELY - do the wiring for 10's to several 100's of kW of power is vastly different. Even more to the point usually mining farms are a business that should carry insurance - that is not going to happen if it has not been wired by licensed professionals.

You are not good as electrician, safety it’s first place for electrician all time and no big difference of 10kW and 100kW, license is not for 10kW or 100kW of power. You can receive license for system up to 1kV(most popular) or for up to 10kV+, but it’s not a kW!
Dude, you should take a look at folks previous posts before making a comment like that.
I have been designing and building industrial power systems since the mid 1970's. I've done power for industrial lasers that pull over 1MW from what amounts to their own mini-substation.

Yes licenses are geared to working voltage but the point that really matters here is what the source can supply to a short-circuit. Just look up 'arc flash hazard' to see the huge difference between DIY wiring in a house where the SCCR *may* be as high as 10kA vs what can can happen when the building service can supply that amount as a normal load. A good example of PPE that is required when working on the high energy areas of building power can be found here. For the vidiots out there here is some very graphic video of what arc flash can do.

Point is wiring power for a large farm is NOT something that is DIY unless you know damn well what you are doing and have experience dealing with that kind of power.
