1121  Economy / Marketplace / Emailing sportsbooks and poker rooms on: August 23, 2010, 05:32:25 PM
I've e-mailed various on-line sportsbooks and poker rooms saying I'm a US citizen and will play with you if you accept bitcoins.

I'm hoping that a major sportsbook would figure there isn't much risk or work involved. Doesn't seem like much for a sportsbook to spend $10,000 on bitcoins (take the market to 50c bid on exchanges) and start accepting bets in bitcoins.

I would think taking the banks out of sportsbooks would be huge for their profitability.
1122  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: So, will you put your things where your mouth is? on: August 23, 2010, 01:08:13 PM
I don't understand all the hate.

You can link to individual auctions, but you can't hotlink to a cool arrow graphic that biddingpond uses.
1123  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Introducing: The Amazing Anonymous Bitcoin Lottery on: August 22, 2010, 04:50:45 AM
I'm afraid to ask newbie questions:

Could anyone post a link to previous winning lotteries?
Why is the next lottery for block 76775? Wouldn't block 76608 seem more round, as this is when a new difficulty comes out? i.e. a lottery every couple weeks?

Can you generate some quick pick numbers, so I don't accidentally guess 1234z?

Whatever it is, I'm in. I'm shipping coins first and will figure it out later.
1124  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Introducing: The Amazing Anonymous Bitcoin Lottery on: August 22, 2010, 04:06:30 AM
Lets 'pretend' I'm not that smart. Could you give an example bet and payout for a previous block? Where can we find the winning lottery numbers?

Is this like "shake of the day" at various bars, where if you roll 5 6's you get 1/2 the pot?
1125  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to deal with DDOF attacks on bitcoin. on: August 22, 2010, 01:08:03 AM
* There should be a 5 day hold on funds before any trading can be done, rather than a 1 month wait to withdraw.

* Offer US Dollar bills on biddingpond.com for BTC. Or offer paypal funds for BTC (same problem, but not a systemic risk to bitcoin markets)

* If I buy a $50 visa card, can those be claimed to be on chargeback? Maybe if a site accepted credit cards instead of paypal.
1126  Economy / Marketplace / Re: MtGox implications on: August 21, 2010, 10:43:57 PM
MtGox: I'd suggest a data output for all trades with timestamp, price and size. With this info, apps can be created for sites like biddingpond.com which give live exchange rates. Would also like to put the exchange rate on my own sites and blogs. The graphs on MtGox aren't all that, let someone else run with the idea.

Visit http://mtgox.com/code/ticker.php for the ticker, or http://www.mtgox.com/code/data/getTrades.php for the last 24hrs worth of trades.

Or you can pull exchange rate info from the data links at the bottom of the page on http://www.bitcoinwatch.com/

Nice! thank you.

[Note: I only wanted to discuss the implications of MtGox. Mods, please delete/move to the MtGox thread if not deemed worthy]

I got to thinking: this is pretty much a bank. I can pay and receive balances from Mt Gox, and it never hits my wallet. Very cool! In fact, anyone could get into bitcoins now, and never have to download the software. Non-techies could simply deposit at MtGox and use their balances as their 'wallet'.

Imagine someone writing a blog about bitcoins, and having a live ticker to the current value vs. USD.

I have asked bitcoinmarket.com to write an RSS feed so I am able to add it to my blog http://www.bitcoinblogger.com.  He has one but it is using https and not http so I can't add to my blog.

I like the blog, its on my reading list now. Ticker would be fantastic for sites just like yours. I see the progress that bitcoins are making, and can't shake this feeling that bitcoins will be huge for internet monies. Buy them now while they are cheap! If these take off and the internet is all bitcoin currency, imagine how dumb we'd all feel for not investing $100 now at 7c each?

This has happened once now. I'm just eating the charge which sucks so please, please don't do this.

How much you stuck? I want to help.
1130  Economy / Exchanges / Re: New Bitcoin Exchange (mtgox.com) on: August 21, 2010, 01:14:59 PM
I'm basically shocked at how well this exchange is doing. Here it is, not even a month old, and the market is already tighter than 0.0005 with thousands up on each side. You have a great product here.

I hope you can make money from a source other than charging per transaction. I'm trying to keep bids & offers out there on both sides.
1131  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Coin generation participation survey on: August 19, 2010, 04:49:15 PM
It is common to hear people explain to newcomers to bitcoin that "its not about the coin generation or getting free money, its about creating a medium of exchange". I am interested in what the current ratio of generators to non-generators in the community is. Obviously this is an extremely NON-scientific method of examining that. So:

1) Have you been using bitcoin for more than two months?

2) Are you currently attempting to generate coins?

3) If not currently generating, have you attempted in the past? If generating, how long have you been generating?

4) Have you ever succeeded in generating a block? Many blocks?

5) Why or why not do you generate? Purely profit-oriented comparison of cost of generation with market value in another currency? Just for fun? As a selfless contribution to the mathematical strength of the proof of work?

Feel free to answer as much or as little as you like and I'm also interested in anything else relevant you would care to add. I will reply to my own post as the first answer.

1) NO. I started 7/23
2) Not anymore
3) I have attempted, but now stopped.
4) I have succeeded in getting 1 block. Very very lucky.
5) I figured out with my computer (1800 khash/s), I should generate a coin every 14 days, which is an average of 3.5/day. at 7c each, I'd rather buy them from Mt. Gox. The heat and electricity my computer goes through is not worth it.

Wonderful site.  Making it free is going to grow the site. Good job.

You could suggest a 2% bitcoin donation for filled orders. I certainly will donate.

I deposited $10 and placed a bid for bitcoins. The depth of market is a little off, I would like to see side by side. Sounds like you are doing this.

Makes me want to sell something cheap on ebay for $5 and let them know I'll take 50 bitcoins instead, and link to your site (against ebay rules?)
1135  Economy / Marketplace / Re: BitSports Betting (Intro and NFL thread) on: August 17, 2010, 09:03:31 PM
I wanted to do an NFL thread, but do it in a different way. Instead of the old fashioned BEARS +3 -110 type stuff, make it pari-mutual like, and invite everyone to bet on both ends.

Example:
minnesota Vikings (+6) [1012] 1CkgLbgjFY............4zUXoRGoVX
   at NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (-6) [937] 15EmRz7U..............nN2tXgv6Ghjz

currently: minnesota +6 -108 / NO -6 +108, because there are 1,012 bitcoins on minnesota +6 and 937 bitcoins on NO.

minnesota vikings (+0) [432] 15VjRaDX..............zrVzN7ixHNsC
   at NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (+0) [817] 1DZ6d5W3..............uVfb2Y2PcoWn

currently: minnesota +189 / NO -189 because there are 432 bitcoins on minnesota to win outright, and 817 on NO to win outright.

If you wanted to bet on minnesota +6, sent bitcoins to 1CkgLbgjFY............4zUXoRGoVX
If you wanted to bet on new orleans moneyline (zero spread) send bitcoins to 1DZ6d5W3..............uVfb2Y2PcoWn
etc....

Then pay out on a pro-rated basis. If there was 100 bitcoins on the winner and 250 on the loser, each winning bitcoin gets 2.5 bitcoin profit and their 1.0 bitcoins returned.

This would encourage market makers to bet on both sides of the game, thus providing liquidity in the market for those who wanted to have straight action. Vig could be taken from the winning bets after a market was established. If another poster wants to offer cheaper vig, so be it! All bets could be up for public viewing, so that everything is verified.

Make sense? I always over do things.

Does your payout depend on the action on both sides when you bet or the balance of action at the time of closing?

Sorry, I'm thick. It's time of wager, right? What about when betting starts and there is nothing yet bet on either side? What are the odds?

It would be pari-mutual, like horse racing. You get the odds at kickoff, not the odds at time bet. While at first this may seem like a bad thing, it would encourage betting on both sides, making deeper, safer markets.

Example:
you bet 50 on heads and 50 on tails on the superbowl cointoss. Now assume someone else bets 10 on heads, making it heads [60] and tails [50]. Tails is paying +120 (60/50).

* if it comes out heads, you lose 50 on tails bet, and make 41.67 on heads bet, net -8.33.
* if it comes out tails, you lose 50 on heads bet, but make 60 on tails bet +10.00

Since it is a 50/50 proposition, your net effect is 0.5*-8.33 + 0.5*10.00 = +0.835 bitcoins in the long run. In fact, if the coin toss really is a 50/50 prop, you can only win in the long run by putting up an even amount on each side.

Of course, when someone sees that a 50/50 prop is paying 1.2 per 1.0, they might just put 10 on tails outright.

Before betting, you would want to know the market size, as you would get screwed putting up 100 bitcoins in a market where there is 40 on one side and 30 on the other.  But all it would take would be a few bookmakers putting up a thousand or so on each side to make it reasonable.
