That's a really smart system that Bitcointalk has, very intricate. So if I understand correct, the next activity cycle will start at 1/30? That's what the spreadsheet I read says.
Indeed. And in order to be more accurate it starts exactly on 1/30/2018 at 19:20:00. Posts before the selected hour will count in the current period ![Wink](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

As we can see right now, bitcoin is going down again to $10,000, so the question is, when do you think will this repeating crashes end and reaches back to $20,000 again? What will be the lowest value of bitcoin in the end of January? Will it be able to recover back to $20,000 by the end of this month?
Personally I prefer that the Bitcoin price keeps fluctuating between $11-13k for few months in order to collect as much as possible then i will never mind seeing it pass the $20k barrier.

So after you get past legendary....do you become a mod =)
No. Legendary is the highest rank level that you can achieve here. The others are just a privilege. Staff/mods get chosen by admins. Take a look at theymos for example he is administrator and legendary. On the other hand, you can be a staff member with a hero rank, it depends in your participation and achievement here.

Bitcoin transection fees is not a bigg dill i think .Because bitcoin crypto currency transection fees are so cheep.when you earn some amount of token or crypto and then you think to convert into in bitcoin. In that time the covertiing time the fees is so small.Because that time you going to get a big profite from them, then the transection fees is not fair from you.
The topic is not about the fees when converting altcoins to Bitcoin. These fees is nothing comparing to the fees paid while you make a transaction between two addresses (buy something on the Internet...). I know someone paid ~$6 for a transaction of ~$60 which is too high, maybe it is due to small output but still high..

So if i am to understand correctly this updates approx every hour or so??
I just wrote a clear explanation 4 posts above you about this confusing statement which was even quoted! Read carefully what was said by members... I have couple of questions - In above post, there are two statements: 1. "your activity score only updates every two weeks" 2. "Activity is updated every hour."
Is the activity updated every hour or once every two weeks?
The activity will increase by 14 every two weeks. And after you make the first post in the new period, it will took up to 1 hour to see the new activity count in your profile. The 2nd question I have is on how time is calculated. time = number of two-week periods in which you've posted since your registration
I joined this forum roughly 10 days ago and by above formula, my time value should be 1 and Activity value should be 14. But my activity value is currently 28. Is the above formula changed since it was originally posted?
It is not calculated like this. It is based on periods. For example for you, you joined in the previous period which ended Tuesday. That's mean you have posted on 2 periods, that's why you have 14 (activity) x 2 (2 periods) =28. Now if we took the example of someone joining after Tuesday, he needs to wait 2 weeks before his activity increases. May I know when my activity value will reach 30 to become Jr Member?
You need to wait until Tuesday - January 30, 2018 More informations about when periods start could be found here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12saLhlUoqIdairxzuSPu6EYGrt7FN2lOstO1yDjCEbA/htmlview?pli=1

So, as many are well aware, Bitcoin saw a huge rise in 2017, peaking over $20,000 in some regions;
Good days but it will return, and personally I do not count the price shown on the small exchanges in different regions of the world. Small volumes = high fluctuation of the price. Of course, it would be tremendous to see those kinds of gains again in 2018, but with regulatory pressure coming down hard, bitcoin has in more difficult waters than ever before.
With segwit acceptance increasing, and the advent of the lightning network likely by year end, how does bitcointalk think BTC will perform this year, and why?
The price will keep fluctuating essentially between $11k and $13k for several days or maybe weeks but it will at some point rise again. The question is when? I think at the end of February.

I understand that people are excited to use this, but this kind of news will only make people rush to use this technology but could end with a disaster. The developers of LN themselves are not suggesting to use it on the mainnet for the moment as there is a possibility of losing funds If the node crash, etc. If you really want to help, use it on the testnet and report bugs.
I am assuming that people will start using it to save fees and for faster transactions. I wouldn't mind using it in the mainnet if the transactions amounts isn't that high but for bigger transactions, we have to wait. This solves almost all the usability issues, and the next big thing needed, would be to make bitcoin more user friendly. People are used to a "windows" type of environment, where they get everything done at the press of a button, and even that way, some people manage to mess things up.
This is how Bitcoin should be : Knock knock, 1 burger please...ok, print this code bar sir...bitcoin transaction sent and tada!
|
|
|
It depends. If people start using BCASH for all sorts of transactions, things won't be as cheap anymore as he portrays them to be to the outside world. So, as long as these blocks remain empty for the major part, he will continue to be in a position where he can hammer down on Bitcoin's expensive fees.
True, just like Bitcoin in the beginning, i remember even sending 2 transactions with zero fees (which obviously isn't a good thing but just for testing) Also, he is lying to the entire world on his live streams when he talks about how a single Bitcoin transaction has cost him +$100 in fees, and that it still isn't confirmed. Standard fees will never cost you that much in fees, so he either just made that story up, or he bundled a bunch of transactions and refrains from including that crucial bit of information in his conversation. It definitely wouldn't surprise me.
Many smallish outputs could cost a lot of money.

But after all it uses the blockchain technology, so will the miners accept it? Will they accept to have way less fees?
Miners have basically no choice other than to accept it if they want to keep mining a solid and only increasing coin. If they don't agree with this off chain scaling solution, they are free to leave or to fork off. As we speak, miners don't need the transaction fees as long as the price remains at least close to current levels. Best of all is that lightning network isn't something you are forced to use. If you don't want to, you can just keep transacting like you always have been doing -- you can see it as an optional feature. On top of that, opening and closing channels require fees too, so it's not that miners won't get any fee income anymore. Combine that with people transacting in the non lightning way, and the miners likely won't even notice much of a difference. Besides, mining should not be the primary objective of the Bitcoin system. Miners are simply a means to an end. Ideally, they would participate if and only if the current fees are enough to offset the costs required of them to mine given the cost of the hardware, the cost of the electricity, and the value of Bitcoin itself. If mining ever becomes not profitable for any one miner causing them to stop, the difficulty will decrease and other miners will benefit more. If at any point there is a majority group of miners, it most likely means that the difficulty is too low and that mining is very profitable, causing more miners to come and compete. It is quite a well designed system with ties to supply and demand theory. Those who can profit from it should do it and those who cannot should not. Fair enough, thanks richardsNY and btcton for the answers. Having more users could help also the system and having low fees is essential for micro-transactions and daily usage ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)

The main problem is that you can't just activate lightning network without it being test through thoroughly. If lightning network gets rushed so that people can make use of it, and there happens to be a flaw or bug that may result in major coin loss, it's pretty damaging for Bitcoin's reputation. With altcoins it's not that big of a deal, but Bitcoin isn't something you can just implement something because people think it's needed asap. Don't get me wrong, we need lightning network, but only if it is tested through thoroughly. And no, Bitcoin isn't losing popularity. Don't look at the market cap to say that Bitcoin is losing popularity, because it's simply not true.
[ELI5] : I didn't take a deep look on the lightning network to be honest but from what I understood, it is fast and can reduce the transaction fees. But after all it uses the blockchain technology, so will the miners accept it? Will they accept to have way less fees?

AFAIK bots are blocked by cloudflare which was implemented lately. That's why http://www.bctalkaccountpricer.info for example stopped working... Other members can confirm this.

I registered on BTC Talk with a Gmail alias address that I've never used for any other purpose, nor have I ever published it anywhere. And, to the best of my knowledge, email addresses aren't visible on our profiles, right? Yet, I just received spam email at my address. So, what's going on? Is the site's database susceptible to having emails scraped? Or is someone selling our email addresses? Or what? Either way, it doesn't look good.
You registered in 2014, the forum has been compromised since then and your e-mail was likely leaked... and I believe the database has been sold multiple times. All you can really do is report the message as Spam to your e-mail provider. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1067985.0And preferably change your password (+/- mail depending from your setting) if you want to secure your bitcointalk account tho. Personally I never remember having a spam in my mailbox.

Post and activity are connected. Basically, a post is anything you post in a forum. You can acquire activity through posting. Your activity is counted within a period of 2 weeks which gives you a maximum of 14 activities or 14 days of being active in your account.
+1/like Why do most people only have an activity counter and not posts?
Go to profile --- Forum Profile Information --- Show post count by posts: Shows post count in addition to activity next to posts. Then just check the box to show your posts count

Thanks to who ever sold me their Bitcoins at $9500! Hahaha ![Grin](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/grin.gif) Some people get depression twice, when the price drops (we lost everyyyyyyyything so selllllll and ruuuuun) and when the price starts rising again (crap i lost ma mooooooneeeeeeyyy). Clever people just HODLing then bought at low ![Grin](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/grin.gif) Well I see GREEN everywhere boys - we are back in bussiness I guess ![Cheesy](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/cheesy.gif) Greenish day but still a reddish week, hope it will recover soon

Theses days (3 red days for the moment) reminds me of previous experience we passed through. Mt.Gox which I witnessed from far and outside of the forums, then comes a huge fall from $600-500 (huge price at that time) to ~$200 and people started thinking that this is the end of the BTC-world and panic selling. 2 years later we reached an ATH of $18k and soon later we are ˝ of it. Crazy. Hope we will recover soon and stop that ~+20% losses in all cryptos

Well, a kinda horrific day in the history of the crypto-world. Its casualty not only touched Bitcoin or a few cryptocurrencies but it touched basically all altcoins in addition to BTC. When watching the top 100 cryptocurrencies, you will see RED everywhere (except only 1 altcoin...from 100!!). The drop in the prices was huge starting from 27% up to +50% and it still continues. People kept selling and apparently some of them going crazy and panic selling. https://web.archive.org/web/20180116223659/https://coinmarketcap.comMy decision is that I will HODL even if the price goes down. Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise...again!
