I think it depends on the conditions and potential of a project. if it has good potential in the future, I think it would be better to buy it at ICO, because at ICO usually the price is quite cheap, especially when there are usually bonus programs or price discounts.

I think depending on the airdrop project, there is a very profitable airdrop and some are end with scam. Last month I read one post in bitcointalk that (who write the post) joined one airdrop and could get result more than $300 from that airdrop.

for bitcoin, I think long term or short, it will still be profitable as long as it keeps monitoring the price movement. profits will come from buy and sell margins (buy when prices fall, and sell when prices go up).
