You can most certainly profit from downward price movements if you are the one causing them with false accusations and you know that the price will recover after it falls since the fall was based on your lies- it allows you (the inside, fraudulent trader) to sell before you spread the lies, and then buy back when it goes lower, and then sell again when it goes back up.
