1161  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Bloody Year 2022 coming to End on: December 12, 2022, 02:42:25 AM

Bitcoin is about to go through a bloody year.  A number of unexpected events have prevented the Bitcoin market from ever moving upward this year.  Dozens of unexpected events have struck fear into the minds of investors.  Starting with investors, governments and central banks have taken a cautious stance on Bitcoin.  So we are almost at the end of this unexpected year.

Some Bloody Events 2022 & Funds Exploits

  • Mango Exploit : $114-115M
  • Wintermute Hack: $160M
  • Beanstalk Farm Hack: $180M
  • Nomad Bridge Hack: $190M
  • WormHole Hack: $320M
  • Ronin Hack: $600M
  • Voyager : $3.75b
  • BlockFi: $4.5b
  • Celsius: $4.5b
  • Genesis Bankrupt: $5b
  • 3AC implosions: $18b
  • Luna/UST crashed: $40b
  • FTX and Alameda Crashed: $40b+

The above shameful scam has completely negative impact on the Bitcoin market in 2022.  We all hope that such incidents do not happen in cryptocurrencies in the coming years.

That's a pretty nice summary of Bitcoin 2022 - the "bloody side" that is.
I wasn't even aware of half of the hacks ("hacks" Roll Eyes Tongue).

The big question to me seems: Will the behaviour of people using Bitcoin (or other crypto) change for the better?
Tbh I have my doubts. Sure, short-term especially the ones that have been burned will take better care of their keys etc.
In the great-scheme of things, with all the mainstream-media-attention that the FTX fkup is getting, this may help to increase general awareness for good Bitcoin-security-practice. I will be suprised however, if something similar like FTX or LUNA does *not* happen within the next 3 - 5 years of crypto history.
1162  Other / Archival / Re: WasabiWallet.io | Open-source, non-custodial Bitcoin Wallet for desktop on: December 12, 2022, 02:21:47 AM
Yes of course, but if there are more attractive options on the market (in comparison to the current big players like trust wallet etc.), some also offering automatic and easy-to-use coinjoin and the others don't - the choices will slowly bend towards the more-privacy-providing-wallets.
Have you tried Sparrow Wallet? Much better wallet than Wasabi in every aspect, and it does have built-in access to Samourai Whirlpool.
The limitation of these mixing (CoinJoin) implementations is that they rely on a centralized server. There is JoinMarket, which instead is completely decentralized.
Really appreciate the recommendations!
Regarding JoinMarket, it's funny to read about it - isn't that exactly what Wasabi wallet could have chosen to prevent the dependency on zknacks? In their blog they explain it is not really possible to have the wallet working without it.  [BTW: I notice how out of the game I am, really confused by the name, wasn't it called zksnarks - first implemented with zcash? Or does zksnacks have nothing to do with this tech?]

Regarding Sparrow, I haven't heard about it so far. Does look awesome, indeed, great interface, coincontrol, cross-platform, it's all there!
The whirlpool mixing, is it the same/better/worse than Wasabi coinjoin?

It will become something common to use - more mainstream so-to-speak. If at some point it's just good practice to offer coinjoin, this could seriously influence the concerns Bitcoin has been facing for years now regarding its privacy. Maybe layer1 options would become obsolete.
In my opinion, CoinJoin won't evolve past the 'band-aid' stage. It was never planned or designed to become the 'ultimate' Bitcoin privacy solution; it all started here, by the way.
Personally, I'd like Bitcoin L1 Privacy to be a future main objective for Bitcoin. Similar to Monero or or Grin, where every transaction is automatically private, without relying on specific wallets, centralized servers or manual actions.
Sure, I would love layer1 privacy for Bitcoin, too. After all sound, money needs to be fungible. I didn't follow the discussion much over the last 12+ months but as far as I remember, getting a consensus to implement such a thing will probably be *quite* the challange - if it can ever happen. So that's why I am quite excited by the idea of making mixing more convenient / common.

Grin is something that sounded very promising, but even worse than Monero there is just no marketing/publicity at all for the project.

Is this just a holiday special or will you release a whole series of these cute chips?
Any more info, how many produced in total? Just quite curious - and also looking forward to some more silver stuff.
1164  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [AUCTION] Moonbits and Satori mixed lot on: December 12, 2022, 01:55:42 AM
I haven't seen peeled Satoris ever! When I first saw that picture I was really confused for a second.
Kind of sad looking, with the whole hologram missing. - Could be fun to make a "bastard"-chip out of it with a different holo on the back. *coug-nasty-5BTC-cas-cough*

Lot 2: 3@ 0.002
1165  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [ANN] [DISCUSSION] Not your keys, not your coins test on: December 10, 2022, 02:53:05 PM
Happy to test as well.

The key to all of this is how a person will be generating the wallet.

You are 100% correct. Internally, we use an air gapped Raspberry Pi with custom UI (on top of open source key gen code).

The keys are directly printed on the polymer using an air gapped laser printer. Main benefits of doing so: safe, waterproof & seamless.

I believe that the reason why our past DIY wallets never took off outside of collectibles was because they were not user friendly.

[...]
Just my take on it: If going for a Bitcoin or any crypto collectible, many collectors don't want DIY in general. - The BIG advantage of DIY is that you only have to trust yourself (and your skills to produce private keys) instead of a 3rd party.
However there are a handful of disadvantages coming with DIY:
- it's (quite some) extra work*
- it does need some research and effort, just to make sure your private keys are not exposed
- the collectible value of DIY seems less interesting because of two things: 1) if you keep it unfunded, it's in a way just another rare item with no direct link to crypto and 2) there is some randomness compared to factory-funded items, some people will fund them, some won't. Also, the way they apply the holo will differ.
- most importantly: if you want to resell a self-funded item with private keys produced by yourself, you need a high level of trust to be able to even find potential buyers

Your thoughts already give a clear hint, as to why DIY priv keys will probably stay very niche for another few years (until there is a TREZOR-like device with its only purpose to print out safe private keys in different formats): "Airgapped Pi, airgapped printer with special ink and paper" - Anything in that range is a lot to handle for most folks and you can't really blame them.

*I still like your challange here, you never know what comes off it - would be cool to get some creative and easy-to-use solutions as a result.

And, call me pessimistic, 'Not your keys, not your coins' - I doubt this will stay on people's mind for too long. Some yes, but the majority... Not so sure. Even after all that happened recently.
1166  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Bitcoin Watches on: December 10, 2022, 01:52:43 PM
Again, shoutout to MMLLC and Mark! Just made a preorder, this thing looks crazy and finally is a subtle but strong way to show off my Bitcoin-nerdiness.
Just imagine, a friendly meeting with some random unexpecting collegues. One asks about your "curious looking watch". And bammm: You go off on a rant about how this things supports the Bitcoin network, has ASICs inside, allows lightning transactions....  Grin

@k33lin: Welcome to the forum! Would love to see some updates from time to time.
And: Any ETA yet?
1167  Other / Archival / Re: WasabiWallet.io | Open-source, non-custodial Bitcoin Wallet for desktop on: December 09, 2022, 11:42:23 PM
Really love the Wasabi project.

You might want to read their past news/announcement, https://blog.wasabiwallet.io/zksnacks-blacklisting-update/.

Thanks. I wasn't even aware, Wasabi was sponsored by a private entity. Their dependance on zkSNACKs is kinda worrying, I am suprised there are no other viable options to make that system run on a similar (or better) level than it does now - without depending on 3rd parties.

Is there any chance to get a proper Android version of this wallet anytime soon?

No, according to their FAQ. Although you may want to ask this question again in next 3-5 years assuming smartphone will be faster.
IS THERE AN ANDROID/IOS VERSION?

No, Wasabi and CoinJoin features require considerable computational power, not currently replicable on a smartphone.
Kind of strange, since Wasabi doesn't need many resources on the desktop version at all...

And not trying to be OT too much, but I am wondering, how do you guys see the chances to make Bitcoin more fungible by having most wallets adopt a mixing function like Wasabi does?

I doubt closed source wallet which created by exchange (such as Coinbase Wallet or Trust Wallet) have any reason to add mixing feature. But only implementing mixing feature is mostly pointless when the wallet isn't designed with privacy in mind. For example, Electrum simply list of wallet addresses to Electrum server.
Yes of course, but if there are more attractive options on the market (in comparison to the current big players like trust wallet etc.), some also offering automatic and easy-to-use coinjoin and the others don't - the choices will slowly bend towards the more-privacy-providing-wallets. It will become something common to use - more mainstream so-to-speak. If at some point it's just good practice to offer coinjoin, this could seriously influence the concerns Bitcoin has been facing for years now regarding its privacy. Maybe layer1 options would become obsolete.

btw: I assume if coinmixing would just be normal practice within most wallets, this would be called a layer2-privacy solution?

1169  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: Casascius, Lealana and NastyFans coin give away competition... on: December 09, 2022, 06:30:47 PM
Anyone here familiar with Particl?
Expected this to be some proprietary (semi scam) wallet-thing first, but after doing some basic research, seems more interesting than I was first suspecting.

Would love to hear some experiences from seasoned collectors here.

@OP: Please elaborate on your business and on how to enter - needs a purchase or just a bid or works without any of these?
1170  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [AUCTION] Mixed Lot: CryptoImperator 10k bits DIY / Moonbits 1k on: December 09, 2022, 06:18:30 PM
Lot 1: 0.0016 btc

A word about these Moonbits flyers: They were a limited run of 250 (+ some, as we had a version with a misspelling that was unnoticed for a short while).
I've around 40 left and usually send 1 or 2 out with any crypto related parcels. No re-prints are planned so far and if ever, it will be an updated version (date and some changes).

Really love the Wasabi project.
Is there any chance to get a proper Android version of this wallet anytime soon?

And not trying to be OT too much, but I am wondering, how do you guys see the chances to make Bitcoin more fungible by having most wallets adopt a mixing function like Wasabi does? Right now I guess less than 1% of people storing their coins in wallets use Wasabi or Samurai or any type of annonymity-increasing measures. However if this becomes something more "main-stream" and more easily accessible, this would create an instant level-up for the true "Satoshi vision"  Wink. It would also make any kind of (hard-forky) core software alterations redundant.
1173  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Banks do not want bitcoin to become popular on: December 08, 2022, 06:16:44 PM
I came across this news on CNBC where standard chartered bank claims that bitcoin will reach 5000$. Being a bank, this can be their wish and not a reality. Banks do not want bitcoin to become popular and therefore they spread this negative information so people panic sell and do not adopt bitcoin.  Sad

This seems like a pure FUD post.
First of all, using common sense should make it clear, that if BTC were to drop even lower than now, there are quite a few very wealthy potential investors, happy to jump in waaaaay before $5k. Around the 13k mark, 11k mark 8k mark... etc.
Secondly, like everyone is already stating: Oh, a bank spreading FUD about Bitcoin. What's new exactly?.  Roll Eyes

And if you already post a screenshot of some random mainstream media blah-article, at least link to the full article so everyone can get some context (if there is any).

Final call, come onboard! Still around 20 slots open for some nice Monero pizes.
I plan to run this by tomorrow evening, even if not all slots are taken. 🦌
Let's go!
1175  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: One Month of Accepting Bitcoin for Payment on: December 08, 2022, 12:59:18 AM
Knowing that the Bitcoin payment I receive from customers is not an investment but rather my business capital, what I do after receiving payment in bitcoin is convert my capital to a stable coin and leave my profit in bitcoin.
(....)
Just some basic questions:
How frequently you are converting the bitcoins you received from your sales? It's like after there is someone who bought using Bitcoin, you convert them immediately to stablecoins. Or do you have a schedule?
And speaking of you converting bitcoins to stablecoins, are you using a centralized exchange here? And where do you store the converted stablecoins after?
Wanted to ask a similar question, curious to hear how you handle holding or cashing out any Bitcoin received as payment.

Since it's now over two months, I was slso wondering if you could give an estimate (percentage) of how many sales actually happen(ed) in Bitcoin?
Thanks and keep it up.

This is a theme I haven't seen before, interesting!
I checked the article and was wondering what Bitcoin Cash is doing in there. Then noticed, it's over 4 years old, so numbers are probably way off already, jfyi.

Will add pics soon.
Do you already have pics of the coin or can you show us some concepts on the final design for all 3 coins?

To up the stakes (for myself) and for some extra excitement I'll give myself a slot in the raffle. #55
If I hit a block, this prize will be doubled. Meaning we re-roll again, but giving out two prizes, rolling two blocks, instead of one.

Example: 3rd prize (1st block) was already won by a participant. Now we are rolling for 2nd prize (2nd block). My entry is hit: Now we roll again, but twice, giving out two #2 prizes.

I liked their first version but was not able to obtain one - I did put a deposit down for one of the V2 "blockwatch 256"

https://node.fun/
Omg, these look like a lot of fun! Website gives off scammy vibes, though, but I guess I am just oversensitive? - So Blockwatch V1 was a thing, does anyone have it and can tell us more?

Is there any more info on te V2 thing somewhere? I am seriously intruiged.
Mining with a solarwatch, probably in the Megahash-range, hahaha, but such a funny gadget if it works.
